Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Tuesday, March 04, 2025

Today Trump set tariffs on Canada, China and Mexico and all those countries are or have announced they will impose retaliatory tariffs. If the paths continues, experts say the economic pain will be felt across the globe. In America the auto industry, which depends heavily on imports from Mexico, could increase prices by more than $10,000. Farmers will be especially hard hit.

Freeland: "If these tariffs are put in place, it is going to hurt Americans ... your grocery prices are gonna go up, bc you know what you need to grow food in the US? You need fertilizer. 80% of it comes from Canada and you're gonna be a 25% tax on it? ... the WSJ is right. This is dumb."[image or embed]

(checks portfolio) I'm up.

Of course...I got out on October 8th, fearing a black swan event leading up to the election.

After the election, my fear turned to piss-poor stewardship, and outright grift.

I'm up.

And I avoided tens of thousands of dollars in losses, even before today.

Vance; and motorcycles and coffee from southern Pennsylvania, which helped return Trump to the White House.

Are you saying that foreign nations narrowly targeting American citizens is somehow more ethical than achieving equity via reciprocal tariffs? Now the punitive component of increased tariff to punish insouciance at the border is something different. There is a point to be made, but I don't necessarily agree with applying tariffs to address it. I do know, though, that when one wishes to leave US, they have to go through an exit process.

CANADA-US TRADE: THE FACTS Canada imported $123 bn CAD worth of services from the US in 2023, and exported $105 bn CAD. Trade between the two countries accounted for 77% of total Canadian goods exports and 63% of Canadian goods imports, but only 18% of total US goods exports and 14% of US goods imports.

Wall Street's losing streak deepens as Trump's tariffs kick in
www.bnnbloomberg.ca

... Stocks tumbled on Wall Street Tuesday as a trade war between the U.S. and its key trading partners escalated and threatened to wipe out all the gains for the S&P 500 since Election Day. ...

The tariffs are prompting warnings from retailers, including Target and Best Buy, as they report their latest financial results. Target slumped 4.6% despite beating Wall Street's earnings forecasts. there will be "meaningful pressure" on its profits to start the year because of tariffs and other costs.

Best Buy plunged 14.2% after giving investors a weaker-than-expected earnings forecast and warning about tariff impacts.

"International trade is critically important to our business and industry," said Best Buy CEO Corie Barry.

Barry said China and Mexico are the top two sources for products that Best Buy sells, and it also expects vendors to pass along tariff costs, which would make price increases for American consumers likely. ...

That is not true GDP growth. That is taking into consideration the government spending money on employees. If the government is spending money buying products that should be part of GDP.

#31 | Posted by fishpaw at 2025-03-04 02:23 PM | Reply

Every day, $3.6 billion in goods and services crosses the Canada-U.S. border, fueling a $1.3 trillion annual trade relationship. This partnership supports: 1.4 million American jobs tied to Canadian exports. 2.3 million Canadian jobs tied to U.S. exports.

I'd post the import tariff schedules for these complaining countries, but for some reason those are more difficult to find than they were in 2017, it's too much trouble just to collect pearls for swine.
Know, though, that our unbalanced import markets are result of many years of carefully planned selling-out by our government officials in exchange for narrow gain for themselves at the expense of American citizens at large.

First, that's part of true GDP growth.

Second, Gov't spending went UP in February.

Third, even IF you factored in all the eliminated positions, it might move the needle about 0.1%. That's it.

Canada generates 1/5th of its GDP by selling into the US

Mexico generates more than 1/3rd of its GDP by selling into the US

The US generates just 1/50th its GDP selling into both

Trade wars hurt everyone but Trump "has the cards" and he knows it

This will increase consumer prices, no doubt. But it has the potential to drive both Mexico and Canada into a depression which is why they are panicking. Trump intends to use this to negotiate border security and to bolster domestic industry.

Will it work? TBD

But don't let people lie about who has the leverage here. The US economy is the golden goose and the whole world knows it.
