Christopher Caldwell: It would be wrong to say the United States is trapped in the war it started. It has options. But it is now going to pay a very steep price, no matter which of them it chooses.

The stars' alignment for catastrophe required only a consummate fool and his manipulator, as the essay's author makes clear:

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel urged this war on Mr. Trump because he, too, recognized the musical-chairs logic of the moment. Once the music stops, the United States may lack the firepower to protect Israel from its neighbors in the traditional manner and will probably lack the inclination. Ironically, the war's catastrophic outcome shows Mr. Netanyahu's basic understanding to have been sound: Israel's prospects for enlisting the United States in such anachronistic adventures were dwindling. Mr. Trump's gullibility provided Mr. Netanyahu with a last chance.

If the roles were reversed, and Iran were bombing America, we'd be holding on just as Iran is doing. Just as Ukraine is doing.

I'd imagine we'd close the Strait of Florida.

The first and foremost reason that Trump got us into HIS war of choice is that he doesn't understand human nature.

He doesn't understand human nature because he is not, and has never had to be, a human being.

It will take at least a generation to undo the effects of what Bush II and the Holy Emperor Trump I have done to this country.

That is, if we all work hard and get our vaccinations current.

Hi Doc Sarvis

The US should never have been an empire in the first place. The American people fought off an empire to become an independent republic. As a congressman from Illinois in 1846, Abraham Lincoln kept questioning the warmongers who pushed for war against Mexico. He would say: "Show me the spot on the map where Mexican forces went into US territory." The newspapers began calling him "Spotty Lincoln."

As a militiaman mustered into service to fight the indigenous tribes, he was elected commander and his unit apparently never engaged the enemy during months of patrols-- A. Lincoln had no blood on his hands.

During the Civil War, President Lincoln did not invade Canada and he had pretext to do so. Confederates ran an espionage and sabotage ring out of Quebec and their envoys worked out of Ontario. Raids were conducted into the northern states and a plot to burn down Manhattan emanated from Confederates in Canada. SECWAR William Seward and the cabinet were all made aware of these machinations.

Protests from all quarters couldn't stop the Spanish-American War (1898) and within four months the US became an empire.

Protests against entering the First World War initially worked, but failed.

"I don't want my son dying in some far away place for some far away reason."

The US would occupy the German Rhineland until 1923 while sending a brigade to help the White Russians and Czech Legion against the Bolsheviks.

Pacification against the Moros and resistance forces in the Philippines continued until the Imperial Japanese Army kicked us out in 1042: "I shall return."

The US wins the Second World War, establishes Bretton Woods, the Five Eyes Intelligence alliance, USCENTCOM, USEUCOM, USPACOM, USSOUTHCOM, and then sacrifices our boys "in a far away place for a far away reason" called Vietnam. Then Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Iran.

While our "empire" rapidly declined and our population pauperized under Republican Party malfeasant governance, the US amassed the most billionaires in history and Israel recorded the highest per capita number of billionaires on the planet.

Endnote: 'Twas a northern oligarch named Horace Greeley who funded CSA Jefferson Davis' post-Civil War bond granting him freedom. Jefferson Davis would outlive A. Lincoln by 20 years or so.

Read A. Lincoln's prophetic words below:

When Trump was elected, I said this made it inevitable that we'd see the US obtain failed state status in our lifetimes.

So far, that statement has been pretty damn accurate.

Doc, Thank you for posting this excellent thread. 'Tis much appreciated.

Coriolanus, your #3 is not only an excellent view of real history, but it should also be required reading by anyone seeking to understand where we are in America in 2026.

Thank you.

IOW, Trump made NOTHING great again, and caused a decline in economy, diplomacy, military, manufacturing, perhaps more important, the country's ethics.

DJT never admits he was wrong... and his Cult follows suit.

They are still drinking his Orange Kool Aid, even as the see the effects are poisoning them daily.

They still 'think' that he's anti-Globalist, anti-war, and pro American worker... Vlad and Xi are laughing their arses off.

We've been in decline ever since republicans lied us into iraq.

But morons keep voting for republicans anyways.

There are extremist groups that openly call for the destruction of Israel and the killing of Jews, wherever they may be.

This has been going on for decades and isn't going away.

The threat keeps rising from the ashes and continues to fuel conflict and instability in the region.

What's the practical way to deal with it long term?

How can there be lasting peace in the Middle East while this persists?

If Iran could bomb America, it would be made in a wasteland very quickly.

It's about the dumbest comment I have ever seen. Just because no one in power believes in your ideology doesnt mean we are a "failed states".

Women are dramatic. Females are dramatic. Gay, flamboyant men are dramatic. So now we know why you are so dramatic. You dont have enough testosterone in your body to calm down.

That's not why, dumbf*&^. We have already begun two of the four characteristics.

Inability to provide services
Collapsed institutions

We're not far from a third - internal strife/violence

The only characteristic of the four that isn't there yet is loss of control, because this administration is trying to exert the most of any POTUS of my lifetime.

Of course, you're the kind of tool bag dumbf*&^ who would refer to women as females.

Also, of course, all you have is to fall back on your feeble sense of what masculinity means.

Because you're a pathetic little b*&^% who couldn't role model a man if he tried.
