Christopher Caldwell: It would be wrong to say the United States is trapped in the war it started. It has options. But it is now going to pay a very steep price, no matter which of them it chooses.

The stars' alignment for catastrophe required only a consummate fool and his manipulator, as the essay's author makes clear:

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel urged this war on Mr. Trump because he, too, recognized the musical-chairs logic of the moment. Once the music stops, the United States may lack the firepower to protect Israel from its neighbors in the traditional manner and will probably lack the inclination. Ironically, the war's catastrophic outcome shows Mr. Netanyahu's basic understanding to have been sound: Israel's prospects for enlisting the United States in such anachronistic adventures were dwindling. Mr. Trump's gullibility provided Mr. Netanyahu with a last chance.

If the roles were reversed, and Iran were bombing America, we'd be holding on just as Iran is doing. Just as Ukraine is doing.

I'd imagine we'd close the Strait of Florida.

The first and foremost reason that Trump got us into HIS war of choice is that he doesn't understand human nature.

He doesn't understand human nature because he is not, and has never had to be, a human being.

It will take at least a generation to undo the effects of what Bush II and the Holy Emperor Trump I have done to this country.

That is, if we all work hard and get our vaccinations current.

Hi Doc Sarvis

The US should never have been an empire in the first place. The American people fought off an empire to become an independent republic. As a congressman from Illinois in 1846, Abraham Lincoln kept questioning the warmongers who pushed for war against Mexico. He would say: "Show me the spot on the map where Mexican forces went into US territory." The newspapers began calling him "Spotty Lincoln."

As a militiaman mustered into service to fight the indigenous tribes, he was elected commander and his unit apparently never engaged the enemy during months of patrols-- A. Lincoln had no blood on his hands.

During the Civil War, President Lincoln did not invade Canada and he had pretext to do so. Confederates ran an espionage and sabotage ring out of Quebec and their envoys worked out of Ontario. Raids were conducted into the northern states and a plot to burn down Manhattan emanated from Confederates in Canada. SECWAR William Seward and the cabinet were all made aware of these machinations.

Protests from all quarters couldn't stop the Spanish-American War (1898) and within four months the US became an empire.

Protests against entering the First World War initially worked, but failed.

"I don't want my son dying in some far away place for some far away reason."

The US would occupy the German Rhineland until 1923 while sending a brigade to help the White Russians and Czech Legion against the Bolsheviks.

Pacification against the Moros and resistance forces in the Philippines continued until the Imperial Japanese Army kicked us out in 1042: "I shall return."

The US wins the Second World War, establishes Bretton Woods, the Five Eyes Intelligence alliance, USCENTCOM, USEUCOM, USPACOM, USSOUTHCOM, and then sacrifices our boys "in a far away place for a far away reason" called Vietnam. Then Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Iraq, Afghanistan, and now Iran.

While our "empire" rapidly declined and our population pauperized under Republican Party malfeasant governance, the US amassed the most billionaires in history and Israel recorded the highest per capita number of billionaires on the planet.

Endnote: 'Twas a northern oligarch named Horace Greeley who funded CSA Jefferson Davis' post-Civil War bond granting him freedom. Jefferson Davis would outlive A. Lincoln by 20 years or so.

Read A. Lincoln's prophetic words below:

So far, that statement has been pretty damn accurate.

Thank you.

There are extremist groups that openly call for the destruction of Israel and the killing of Jews, wherever they may be.

This has been going on for decades and isn't going away.

The threat keeps rising from the ashes and continues to fuel conflict and instability in the region.

What's the practical way to deal with it long term?

How can there be lasting peace in the Middle East while this persists?

That's not why, dumbf*&^. We have already begun two of the four characteristics.

Inability to provide services
Collapsed institutions

We're not far from a third - internal strife/violence

The only characteristic of the four that isn't there yet is loss of control, because this administration is trying to exert the most of any POTUS of my lifetime.

Of course, you're the kind of tool bag dumbf*&^ who would refer to women as females.

Also, of course, all you have is to fall back on your feeble sense of what masculinity means.

Because you're a pathetic little b*&^% who couldn't role model a man if he tried.

I have not seen any workable ideas to my question #12.

This question is in earnest.

The conflict between Muslims and Jews is at the heart of this fighting.

Will there ever be peace over there?

Can there ever be peace?

Do they have irreconcilable differences?

Trump is responsible for the carnage. Sure, he is old and lost in his delusions, but legally, he is perfectly fine to stand trial for the many, many war crimes he has committed. It is murder in every jurisdiction in America to kill criminal suspects extrajudicially, by the way.

#21 Why do you hate Muslims? Why are you so afraid of Muslims?

Israel is a Settler Colonial Enterprise.

The Muslim Countries have a problem with Crusader type Colonial Activity.

Read some history. The Crusades were aggressive wars of Conquest waged on Muslims by Christians to "Free" the "Holy Land" from "Infidels".

Israel is a new Iteration of this only the real motive isn't Religion, it's control of Hydrocarbons. Religion is a Con. Most of the Israeli leaders don t even believe in Judaism. They are Atheists.

Peace could be had at any time if the Israelis left Israel like the Crusaders left the ME centuries ago after a long period of Occupation.

If the Israelis won't leave there will be War but it's not just the Muslims causing it.

If the Israelis could show some humility and humanity then the Muslims would Eat them alive.

That is the working Hypothesis.

So the Israelis get huge Aid Packages from the US and Europe to stay on top by mass Violence and constant War.

This was tried by the Crusaders, too. The European settlements in Palestine didn't last. They pulled out because the local people were too Aggressive against them and it became unfeasable to remain.

There is nothing new here.

Israel is on borrowed time.

Peace will come when the Intruders leave the ME.

Like it did when the Crusaders returned to Europe.

We knew. We all knew. We all knew that democrats / their " bagdad bob" propaganda

machine GD lying scum media....AND "YOU PEOPLE" were lying all along.

from a writer in New York......

" " Wait...the dems all told us that the wealthy don't pay taxes and that they leave it up to everyone else to pay....How is it possible then that the NY tax base has "eroded" as a result of the departure of the wealthy if they were barely paying anything to begin with? Don't tell me that the dems lied again?

--I guess the wealthy were in fact paying more than their fair share, given that the departure of so few people is resulting in such a draconian economic situation as a result of the dems' policies.

--It's abundantly clear now that the dems simply were using the wealthy as a scapegoat as a means to deflect from their massive policy failures, which are the direct cause of the dire situation that New York and most other blue states find themselves in. They finally admit it.

--This is why the dems should NEVER be allowed to govern again - in ANY role, whether it be President, Governor, Mayor, Senator or Congressman ...

Zionists and their idiotic supporters have historically projected upon others the evils that they have either already perpetrated or ones they intend on perpetrating in the future.

Colonizers like the Zionists are always under the delusion that they're defending themselves. That's why they build forts on land inhabited by other peoples. Then they freak out over the fact that they are surrounded and use that as an excuse to do ------ things to babies and children and churches and bakeries and stuff. Well, duh, you just built a fort on land that you stole.

Trump is using the Israeli playbook in Hormuz (and with his presidency in general)-- he goes there and does his evil ----, then he acts like a freedom fighter and offers to secure the release of all the trapped ships and sailors that are only trapped because of his idiocy.

America's "decline", sadly, is the typical, historical colonizer's decline.

Eff,

"Israel is on borrowed time.
Peace will come when the intruders leave the ME.
Like it did when the Crusaders returned to Europe."

You're comparing modern Israel to the Crusaders, but the situations aren't the same.

The Crusaders were not Jews.

Israel is a nation with generations of people born there who aren't going anywhere.

So what's the actual solution you're proposing?

Again...what is the workable solution for dealing with jihadist groups and regimes that openly call for Israel's destruction and continue attacks regardless of the circumstances?

The current Iranian regime is one of them.

I repeat...what is your actual workable solution?

Jews aren't going anywhere.

This isn't about "hating Muslims."

It's about dealing with those who openly call for Israel's destruction.

Isolationism and nationalism and any -ism that keeps the US out of other nations is thoroughly rejected by the media and politicians.

The average joe wants us to leave the world alone.

Trade? Sure, but not alliances. Alliances share enemies.

"The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible. So far as we have already formed engagements, let them be fulfilled with perfect good faith. Here let us stop. Our detached and distant situation invites and enables us to pursue a different course ... "

George Washington's statement is rejected as if the US must be the defender of the world and any nation under rule.

Such as, NDAA

The Fiscal Year 2026 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), signed in December 2025, mandates a minimum of 76,000 U.S. troops in Europe. This provision prevents the administration from reducing troop levels below this threshold for more than 45 days without congressional certification and NATO consultation.
