Nikole Hannah-Jones Just Ran Head-First Into the Great Dumbing-Down
"In Fighting for Every Black Child, Did I Betray My Own?" tells the story of Hannah-Jones' shock at learning her then-eighth-grade daughter, Najya -- who had been earning A's in honors math -- had failed the state algebra exam.

Years of republican policies are paying off.
"Education is for snobs!" - Rick Santorum
"I love the poorly educated!" - Donald Trump
Meanwhile both of Trump's department of Education hires, Betsy DeVos and Linda McMahon, have defunded and destroyed public education.

The Republican Dumbing Down of America Program is werking really well!
The Dumbing Down of America has been a 50 year project of the Republican Party that started with, "The tax cuts for the wealthy will Trickle Down!"...
... and continued with Planned Recessions, underfunded edumacation, expensive bad healthcare, Money as Speech, Corporate Personhood, and legalized political bribery and Forever Wars.
So, they've werked long and hard for the resulting Trump voters.

@#7 ... Is ol' stinkerbell complaining or bragging? ...
Good question.
Around here, it seems to be the GOP politicians who want to constantly reduce the funding for public schools and, instead, try to use public funds to finance their entry-limited private schools.
And, don't get me started on the dollars-per-student spent on public schools in wealthy towns vs the same stat in the less wealthy towns.
I mean, just go to Wilton, CT (a wealthy town here in CT) and look at their high school on US RT7. It looks more like a college campus than a high school.
Wilton, Connecticut en.wikipedia.org
... The median income for a household in the town was $197,428, and the median income for a family was $217,415. Males had a median income of $190,000 versus $71,611 for females. ...

@#10 ... While the right and Republicans CONTROL public education. ...
So, you've also noticed that the GOP drum-beating reduction of money for public schools may have had an effect upon the outcome for students graduating from those schools.
For me, if I were assigned the task of improving public schools, the first thing i would do would be to equalize the money spent upon the schooling of each student.
From what I see here in Connecticut, the difference between the wealthy towns and the non-wealthy towns is amazing.

@#13 ... Hence the devolution. ...
Exactly.
Republicans want to defund public education in favor of providing themselves discounts to attend their private schools.
So, instead of Republicans wanting to improve the problems they may see in public schools, all Republicans seem to want to do is make public schools even worse by defunding them.
It just fits into the uber-wealthy wanting to continue to have a whole class of people who are unable to do anything by work for the uber-wealthy.

The failing schools Jones' kid attended spend over $50K per student, well above the national average. These districts are wholly run by Democrats and their union buddies. So naturally Danforth and Lamplighter blame the GOP for their failure and naturally are opposed to things like school choice they give parents options for their kids.

What explains Donald Trump's lack of education?
Yeah, I know. He went to school.
So what happened to him?
Solve that riddle and maybe we can get some insight into what happens to ordinary people.
Of far greater interest is why a frankly ignorant SOB like Trump was ever granted power.
I can only be that an eve more ignorant electorate put him there.

Shouldn't the founding of the federal Department Of Education in '79 resulted in better results - not worse.....
As long as the majority of teachers and their teachers' unions are run by liberals, I see no 'progress' towards a better public school education as indoctrination takes priority.

I'm tutoring my granddaughter and 2 of her classmates in MATH 103, College Algebra, at the local junior college. They're freshmen. She's almost completely lost. I'm helping her with basic binomial and trinomial algebraic equations and factoring which I'm almost positive I learned in 8th-9th grade, albeit 45 years ago. She got mostly B's with a few A's and C's in high school. The area I live in is about 60-65% Republican and heavily MAGA. Not Democrat run.

Why would any intelligent person take a job as a teacher? The pay is terrible, the kids are --------, and the parents are bigger --------.
1. teachers need to be paid A LOT MORE. That's what south korea does. Teachers are as respected in their society as medical professionals.
2. AI needs to be used so that each kid can advance at their own pace instead of being held up by the dummies in their class. Honestly AI might be the thing to save our whole education system if incorporated properly.
3. Bring back standardized testing. ---- your feelings. If you get a bad grade then you need to try harder.
4. Bring back FAILING. No more passing kids who don't deserve to pass.
5. Bring back phonics. No more "it's racist to make a kid prononouce A-S-K as "ask". It's ok to pronounce it as "AX" too"

1. teachers need to be paid A LOT MORE.
100% on target. School board in my district is more concerned with bathrooms and pronouns than improving facilities and paying teachers. 88% GOP state legislature bangs their drum about school vouchers and parent choice, about not letting teachers' unions have too much influence. Who should be making decisions about the classroom? The people who've dedicated their lives to studying and delivering education, or a screaming partisan mob who thinks the liberals are turning their kids trans? The average teacher in my area, with higher entry level and continuing education requirements, makes less than the average police officer. We defeated a bond initiative for school facility improvements, but are building a new combined law enforcement center. Priorities...

We have a rather large population of retired people around here that vote down any and every school bond our district puts up. Leaky roofs, unreliable heating, and shabby sporting facilities. Somebody donated a good chunk of money towards the auditorium which turned out nice with sound and lights.
I don't pay as much attention since my kids finished public school, but I always vote for school bonds. I think millennials aren't cheapskates like the boomers, so things are getting better.
