'America has Turned'

Historian Heather Cox Richardson writes about how recent days will be viewed in history from the perspective of Europe. This time "will live in infamy" Richardson quotes the London's Financial Times editorial board: "[i]n the past ten days, [Trump] has all but incinerated 80 years of postwar American leadership." Instead, it has become an "unabashed predator," allied with Russia and other countries the U.S. formerly saw as adversaries.

I expect to be explaining this all to some German shortly. Among the things that I will tell him.

1) I didn't vote for that bastard, Trump. A lot of us didn't.

2) I am sorry that this wasn't enough. If it's any consolation, the people who support Trump are already paying through their noses.

3) Keep NATO and expand it. At this point just assume that the United States isn't part of it. Stop sharing intelligence information with us.

4) About a dozen NATO countries including Germany could acquire nukes. Do that.

5) You need a much bigger fleet.

At home, on Veterans Day. let's stop showing "Saving Private Ryan".

On the 4th of July, stop showing "The Sands of Iwo Jima".

Neither film represents this country any more.

I would say to that German: At this point in time Germany is a much better country than the USA.

I would say: keep your democracy as an inspiration to those of us in America who have not given up hope.

I would say: No thanks. I don't wan to emigrate, though I could. I'm going to help ride this thing out and maybe the next time I speak with you I can look you in the eye again.

"Yesterday the European Union imposed more sanctions on Russia. Today the United Kingdom announced a sweeping package of sanctions rivaling those of the war's early days. They include sanctions against companies in various countries that supply components like tools, electronics, and microprocessors for Russian munitions. The sanctions also include Russian oligarchs, ships transporting Russian oil, and North Korea's defense minister No Kwang Chol, whom the U.K. holds responsible for deploying North Korean soldiers to help Russia."

Why did they wait until now to do these things?

Why not do this shortly after the initial invasion?

Can anybody in Europe wipe their ass without relying on the US for the toilet paper?

Maybe because America was doing the sanctions so they didn't feel the need to until Trump sold our country out to Putin. You understand??

understand what? That you typed "maybe" in front of a sentence so that they aren't really your words? Drop the maybe or just admit you're guessing.

We all question why the US is counted on to the world's policeman.

When we get our friends to get off their asses and do something for themselves to solve a problem in their own damn backyard.....you call that "selling our country out".

I'm not going to call it anything at this point. I know...that makes me a traitor. Have fun attacking me. But it doesn't solve anything.

But you're acknowledging that all of Europe does nothing and counts entirely on the US for their security.

Want to know how much America has turned? This is what the US Department of State website had to say about the American position on Ukraine on Jan. 20, 2025 ( note the date ):

"The United States, our allies, and our partners worldwide are united in support of Ukraine in response to Russia's premeditated, unprovoked, and unjustified war against Ukraine. We have not forgotten Russia's earlier aggression in eastern Ukraine and occupation following its unlawful seizure of Crimea in 2014. The United States reaffirms its unwavering support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, extending to its territorial waters."

Link:www.state.gov

As a European I have for many years supported the position that reliance on the US should be drastically reduced. It suited the Europeans to let the US do the heavy lifting, but it is also the case that the US was, for the most part, happy to do so. That Europe will now have to stand on its own 2 feet is fine by me.

But any sane US administration with a strong will to decouple from Europe, should have been capable of doing so without pursuing such a dishonourable, back-stabbing, untruthful approach. It was certainly possible to decouple without bending the knee to Putin. For Trump and his apologists, there traits are badges of honour; to millions of Americans, they will be just the opposite - a national stain that will last a very long time.

And if we got access to the minerals in Ukraine that Zelinsky agreed to Ukraine would have a pretty strong ally that Putin wouldn't f with.

As you were typing, did it occur to you how -mafia protection racket- that sounds?

#80 | Posted by Whatsleft at 2025-02-25 01:54 PM

-So you'd give up part of your home in the name of a tenuous peace? I damn sure wouldn't!

Is there a gun to my kid's heads?

I get your point....but aren't we trying to save lives?

Or is the argument this deal going to cost more Ukranian lives in the future? As well as Russian lives.....

Or is this peace actual peace?

I mean, they are.

I don't think you want to talk about media right now considering the media you get all your news from is firing their staff because of crumbling ratings. And you know why their ratings have crumbled? Because people have woken up that they have been lying to them continuously. Maybe someday you will get it as well.

#75 | Posted by fishpaw

I'll talk about media happily anytime.

Yours is a bunch of liars and billionaires who parrot russian propaganda.

Mine is suffering in ratings because people are too depressed to watch real news.

And you see this as a victory because you're a moron.

This is what I mean.

It's part of what you are not to credit ordinary reality until that reality bites you in the ass.

Further, you make it so that reality is required to bite you in the ass really hard.

Why should America get involved?

"The six-day poll, which closed on Tuesday, showed 44% of respondents approved of the job Trump is doing as president, down from 45% in a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted January 24-26. Trump's approval rating stood at 47% in a January 20-21 poll conducted in the hours after the Republican's return to the White House"

Don't belittle your efforts to create a safe space for white supremacists and wannabe Nazis.

Everyone is over reacting, right?

Hell the other week you were aghast that anyone stood up to Nazis marching in Ohio.

Why can't we just leave them alone?

you're so cute.

I applauded those folks. I made fun of the morons here who think they're helping by screeching about it on a blog.

If ever there was a perfect time for China to in case and annex Taiwan, it is right now. While Trump is POTUS he will not allow the US military respond. Just as he advocated cleansing the Gaza Strip by Israel and converting it into luxory communities, a la the French Riviera. And Trump tacitly is giving Russia a green light to invade Lithuania and Estonian when it is finished with The Ukraine. To say nothing of trying to bully both Canada and Greenland to surrender their sovereignty to the US.

Trump is a horrible evil man. And as illustrated by the slaughter of Native Americans and the establishment of the cruelest institution of slavery the world has ever known, America has pretty much always been inhabited by evil horrible white people, Trump truly is representative of a large cross section of modern white American.

You believe Putin will keep going? seriously?

This is key, IMO. Where could Putin go and not drag the UN or NATO into it?

The 5 countries 'at risk' of Vladimir Putin takeover if Ukraine falls

Volodymyr Zelensky warned Russia's strategic target "is Europe".
By REBECCA ROBINSON
14:42, Tue, Feb 25, 2025 | UPDATED: 14:43, Tue, Feb 25, 2025

He said: "When you have Russian-speaking people, or their roots, or their families ... it's our history ... then you are at risk. At the very beginning, they said that they are not occupying our territories ... that they are defending Russian-speaking people.

"If we will fall down ... I think all such countries who I mentioned have this risk because of Russian policy, because their view of the Russian world."

Specifically, he picked out Poland, Slovakia, Latvia, Estonia, and Moldova as Putin's potential next conquests should he succeed in Ukraine.
