Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Saturday, May 25, 2024

According to Ukraine, over half a million Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded over the length of its 27-month-long 3 Day Special Military Operation. The staggering number is in line with the estimates of the U.K. and France, which said earlier in May that the overall Russian losses are set to be around 500,000.

"The staggering number of Russian military losses is likely to have significant demographic and economic consequences for Russia, with potential long-term impacts on the country's future. [...] 150,000 figure of Russian troops killed is around 10 times higher than that suffered by the Soviet army during the decade-long war it fought in Afghanistan from 1979 until 1989. For comparison, the U.S. military lost around 102,000 soldiers killed in all the wars it fought since the end of World War II, including 58,220 during the Vietnam War. [...] And Russia's losses show no signs of slowing. Moscow lost the most number of soldiers in a single day since the start of the full-scale invasion - 1,740 - on May 12 [...]. 'It all adds up to another demographic time bomb which I think is going to blow its way through Russia in the next 10-20 years.'"

Political leaders on all political sides who create wars need held fully to account. They outrageouly always benefit while the average citizens always lose. False flags are typical and the elites despise seeing the names and provocateurs mentioned. Expose and hold accountable. Iraq etc were an outrage.

A truly righteous war in USA would be initiated immediately against foreign drug czars and those responsible for failing to stop the foreign invasion. Violent street gangs need to be investigated and destroyed as national threats. Obama failed to go after MS13.

No, not all poliyical leaders. One single political leader is alone responsible for the war in Ukraine. One order from him and it would end instantly. I'm sure President Zelinsky would grant safe passage for the Russians to leave Ukraine.

Biden today said he talked to Putin right after he was elected about Ukraine. Did nothing to help Ukraine BEFORE the war.

Now after the invasion Biden suddenly cares, of course only cares when money is sent to Ukraine (seriously?), this is horrible leadership.

Could Trump have done any better? Could the situation be any worse? Ukraine on fire, Middle east on fire, Taiwan shaking in their boots.

Biden's genius move to put a "pier" in Gaza is now in FULL display of the US military incompetence.

Tell me who would be better than Biden at this point? Is there anyone?

So many people really have no idea how the economy works. They don't understand deficits in a fiat currency world mean nothing. An economy can tank even if there is no deficit. Likewise inflation can be stopped by a majority just deciding it is over.
(This aside from actual causes in increases due to things like wiping out half the population of egg producing chickens due to bird flu, which are temporary and supply/demand issues).

Enjoy this short article: www.npr.org

The deficit and debt we have today have nothing to do with the inflation we had experienced. Nor does the extremely moderate inflation we currently have have anything to do with it, either.

Oh, and the best way to spend defense dollars to defeat Russia is to fund Ukraine. It's an incredibly cheap and highly effective weapon.
And no, Russia isn't telling the truth about their losses. They lied through the Afghan war to their own people. It's what they do.
Or you can choose to believe known liar over 4 different sources that all generally agree with the number of Russian troops killed.
Your choice.

That's not how proxy war works and that's not the real number. That's the cherry pick to make us feel better about it. Facts on the ground are different. You have to calculate in the cost of weapon systems that no longer work. Excalibur and HIMARS went from >90% to less than 10% accuracy. It's no longer a system we can use effectively should we need to fight China or Russia. Poland's entire 100 HIMARS system order is now obsolete. Billions of current US inventory is now obsolete. US Deep Strike battalions are now equipped with obsolete, ineffective weapons.

Yup. Kicking Russian arse with paper. The paper dollar. Best deal ever!

Russian casualties -500,000

American casualties -53

As for the Russian economy it's war spending is what is goosing its economy. But that money is not being reinvested in the economy. It's being invested in war and is not sustainable.

The main driver of economic growth is gargantuan war-related state expenditure. For the first time in modern history, the country is set to spend 6% of gross domestic product (GDP) on the military this year, and defense outlays will exceed social spending.

Currently the interest rate in Russia is 16%. (Can you imagine fixed news squeals if that was our current interest rate?) The Kremlin now pours money not into new roads or cutting-edge machinery, but into tanks and missiles.

Russia isn't fighting NATO. If they were, it would be a Turkey Shoot, given that Ukraine has already devastated most or not all of the elite Russian units.

Poland, Norway, Sweden...they are all chomping at the bit for Russia to get froggy. To give them an excuse to sink the Baltic Fleet. And it would be easy, as Russia has little to no ability to defend themselves against highly sophisticated Scandanavian weapons systems.

Sometimes it's better to lose quickly and move on if possible.

Palestine would have done better to sue for peace with Israel given the reality of greater force and resources... But Israel wants them all dead,or in open air concentration camps, living like tormented animals awaiting slaughter.. They really have no choice but to fight, it's existential.

Ukraine could have had peace without these horrible consequences. The Russians are more reasonable than the Jews are being, it's not a war of Annihilation in Ukraine. Without NATO this war wouldn't even have happened.

The Palestinians are fighting against actual Extermination. The total destruction of their culture and their complete erasure from history.

The Ukrainians just don't want to lose the Donbass and Crimea. Artificial lines on a map are more important to NATO than the lives of Slavs.

The people living in Crimea and Donbass voted to join Russia.

There was civil war in Ukraine for eight years before Putin took the side of the Russian separatists in the Donbass.

Ukraine was killing their own people.

NATO caused this as much as Putin did.

There is reporting in spring of 2022, Ukraine and Russia were close to a deal.

Many believe the Weather sabotaged these talks.

As Charap and Radchenko show, the reality is a bit more complicated. Johnson didn't directly sabotage a ceasefire deal in spring 2022; indeed, there was no deal ready to be signed between Russia and Ukraine. The two sides hadn't agreed on territorial issues, or on levels of military armaments permitted after the war. Ukraine's position during the negotiations necessitated security guarantees that western states were hesitant to provide. And there were domestic political questions inside Ukraine related to Russian demands about "denazification" to contend with.

- Just trying to figure your actual positions.

No you aren't. You are just trying to make excuses for Vlad the Invader's targeting of Citizens in Ukraine. Much like he did in Syria.

Try to focus on the current topic, not your silly Whataboutisms.

Peace at this point is in Everyone's interest but the ghouls pushing the slaughter to test arms and "weaken Russia".

Putin shouldn't have invaded, NATO shouldn't have Incited.

Ukraine is like Iran. Just a punching bag for great power rivalry.

Both countries have been destroyed and remade by this.

Ukraine could become estranged from the West you know, they have plenty to be pissed about.

Be used up for someone else's agenda does that.

Iran was once pro Western and an ally.

Something to consider.

Nato didn't incite anything; there wasn't a flood of countries joining them until after the Invasion.

And blaming Ukraine is like blaming the rape victim for wearing a short skirt. It's idiotic.

- Peace at this point

If Ukraine wants to accept Vlad's theft of part of their country, as he is now begging for a Ceasefire where his troops now stand, that's up to Ukraine and no one else.

If Zelinsky loses control, What Then?

The Shah was our buddy.

He repressed millions of Iranian people for the Western obsession with hydrocarbons.

Now the Islamic Republic is the law in Iran. Oops. Big trouble In little Iran.

Ukraine is not unified, that's why the war happened.

The future is uncertain. Nobody is indispensable.

Russia is not going anywhere they are fully committed to this.

It's a war of choice for NATO..

Nato didn't invade anyone, Vlad did.

And he would have found another excuse had Ukraine been unified.

You need to get something through your thick skull.

Vlad is interested in restoring ALL the states of the Old Soviet Union.

Ask Georgia, or any of half a dozen others. Or Poland or Finland or Norway, for that matter.

How does MY household manage to remain unaffected by alleged inflation, you may ask yourself, I say change the contents of your market basket, for example, to include house brands and less expensive cuts of meat.

#73 Also shop the sales. I try never to buy toilet paper, paper towels, butter, olive oil, etc. unless it is on sale.

...and don't forget the OTHER estimate half million or so Russian males that left Russia before the serious conscriptions began. So basically, Russia has lost
1 million (give or take 100k) millitarily conscription aged males (permanently) from their ranks.

Ooo, that's gotta hurt!

Vlad better save his nukes.
It will be the ONLY thing that keeps
a resource hungry China at bay when the
dust from this debacle of an invasion
finally clears.

A few observations:

1. Until recently, no one under 28 (or 27) was drafted by Ukraine. Younger volunteers were accepted reluctantly. This led to an army that was more mature, more experienced in their careers and hence able to do more with less training needed and with great skills in things like tech, code writing, supply logistics, and manufacturing & construction.

2. The US & NATO aren't to blame for Putin's troll puppet Victor Yanukovich pissing off 87% of the Ukrainian people in 2013 when Yanukovich took Putin's bribe to reject the EU's offer to take initial steps toward EU membership. That eventually led to the Maidan Sq demonstrations, which led to Yanukovich sending Moscow-friendly forces to blast away at the demonstrators (killing many) and for the people and legislature of Ukraine to demand Yanukivich's resignation. Yanukovich fled to Crimea where Putin's special ops forces invaded in unmarked green uniforms and took over every government office in Crimea & rescued Yanukovich.

3. When this happened in 2014, the Obama administration did nothing except place sanctions on Russia's economy and tell Putin his annexations wouldn't be recognized.

4. Before 2013, when Putin invaded neighboring Georgia and annexed its Abkhazia district, the US & NATO did the same thing, chastised Putin and asked him to give back its annexed land to Georgia.

If NATO provoked Putin's invasion, it wasn't because PUTIN feared NATO. It's because he'd become used to getting away with land grabs and thought he'd go bigger this time. .
