Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, May 29, 2024

A jury of 12 citizens have been given instructions by the judge and will now work to make a decision on whether former President Donald Trump broke the law in relation to charges that he allegedly arranged hush-money to be paid to prevent potentially damaging information to surface before the 2016 election.

Let's say the unthinkable happens and (1) Trump is found guilty; (2) he is sentenced to prison; and (3) his prison term begins before the election.

Will Republicans try to replace him on the November ballot? Or will they roll the dice on having their candidate run for office from a jail cell and whine about how unfair his life is because for once he had to face consequences for something he did?

Given the reality of America's justice system it is highly unlikely we will actually have to confront this question, but it's an interesting thought exercise regardless.

Trump as hush money jury deliberates: Mother Teresa could not beat these charges'

... Former President Trump fumed Wednesday just after his New York City criminal case was turned over to the jury for deliberations, blasting the judge in the case and bemoaning that "Mother Teresa could not beat these charges." ...

My first question ... would Mother Teresa even think of doing the acts that fmr Pres Trump is alleged to have done?

And, as a follow-up ... fmr Pres Trump apparently trying to equate himself with Mother Teresa?

The twice-impeached former president briefly addressed reporters in the hallway as the jury began deliberating.

"Mother Teresa could not beat these charges," he said, appearing to both acknowledge the possibility of his own conviction and also compare himself to the Roman Catholic saint and Nobel laureate famous for her work with the poor.

"I mean that: Mother Theresa could not beat those charges, but we'll see," he added. "We'll see how we do. It's a very disgraceful situation. Every single legal scholar said there's no case and it shouldn't be brought."

There needs to be a unanimous decision of guilt or not guilty for the charge.

Many of the charges carry a possible 4-year jail term.

From what I've heard... If he is found guilty on multiple charges, the 4-year jail terms would run concurrently, not sequentially. So, whether he might be found guilty of one charge or many charges, there seems to be a maximum 4-year jail term involved.

As always, I am not a lawyer, just paraphrasing what I've heard.

YMMV.

There are 34 charges and a mountain of evidence.

They will find him guilty of at least one charge. Mostly likely multiple charges.

Trumpy will not go to prison.

And he will lose the election if it's a fair election and we get the vote out.

Which is why such a comparatively small percentage of jury trials end up being hung. They have a serious job to do and thy will do all they can to carry it through to completion.

Trump struck a pessimistic tone after leaving the courtroom following the reading of jury instructions, repeating his assertions of a "very unfair trial" and saying: "Mother Teresa could not beat those charges, but we'll see. We'll see how we do."He remained inside the courthouse during deliberations, where he made a series of posts on his social media network complaining about the trial and quoting legal and political commentators who view the case in his favor. In one all-capital-letters post, he proclaimed that he didn't even "know what the charges are in this rigged case," even though he was present in the courtroom as the judge detailed them to jurors.

I am predicting some Guilty verdicts on Monday. There are a lot of counts and they want to make sure they go everything thoroughly. I have no doubt in my mind but that each juror believes the perception of fairness and proper deliberation comes across to the public. Last thing any juror wants is the perception that there is any rush to judgment.

The reason I think the jury will have the verdict on Monday is because it often seems jurors reach a conclusion on Friday, but want the weekend to think about it and feel certain that they believe they have reached the correct conclusion. I also believe that Trump's best chance for an acquittal would have been if the jury came back with a verdict today. Obviously that did not happen. Obviously the jury was not swept away by the Defense closing argument.

As a general rule in serious cases, when leaning towards conviction a jury moves slowly, then checks, double checks and triple checks the evidence. They WANT to get it right if they are going to convict someone of life changing charges.

On a separate note, I guarantee none of the attorneys involved with the case are enjoying any rest or peace of mind while the jury deliberates. Every time their phones ring, it is like a five alarm event possibly from the court clerk telling them the jury has reached a verdict. That can and does go on for days. Decompression does not begin until AFTER the verdict.

I am predicting some Guilty verdicts on Monday.

Any guess when the appeals will be settled?

@78

And I was listening to a former prosecutor today saying the longer a jury deliberates the more likely it is to acquit.

Lawyers...

Nope. I have never had a jury that deliberated for more than a week that did not convict or have a hang which numerically heavily favored the prosecution. Like 9-3, 10-2 or 11-1. And I have taken well in excess of 100 verdicts over my 30+ doing criminal jury trials. Unless a prosecutor's case has gaping holes in it which point to obvious acquittal, most juries on serious cases take their time.

Case in point: OJ's acquittal came back the same day the jury first went out. The racial clouds hanging over that case (regardless of whether you agree or disagree with the racial perspective) made it pretty much a forgone conclusion the jury was going to acquit OJ, no matter what the evidence. That being the case, jurors just wanted to get it over with and get out of there already.

His take is that all of the prep the case went through getting to trial and the jury ends up seeing it the way the grand jury and the prosecutor saw the evidence.

He is saying the longer the case goes the less likely to get a guilty charge with an exception for a complicated case

Trump gets a few invoices from his lawyer.

Yep. The guy who stiffs restaurants and contractors and eats fast food definitely didn't notice or care about $130,000.00 that happened to go to the pornstar he rawdogged. Happens all the time!

with matching memo fields of "legal expenses".

It's the application's fault!

It can't be a crime and wasn't his fault because there was no proper pull down menu for "illegal campaign expenses"!

Everything about this trial is created so Biden and NY Democrats can create an injustice fiasco with their NYC case absurdity. They purposely want to create a national uprising and more, thinking they can use it just as they try to use 1-6, but they forget about 2020 riots and insurgency. Biden has purposely filled America with anger, resentment, and hate. He wants more.

#72 | POSTED BY ROBSON

Biden wasn't even running for office when these crimes were committed. Don't you mean Hillary? Or is your conspiracy generator broken? DOJ didn't touch any of PO1135809's crimes while he was in office, because of a memo created during Dick Nixon's crimeing...

You fake Christians are entertaining to watch, as you defend a rapist who was cheating on his wife with a porn star when he was running for president. Great values, man!

I don't think that will be the case - no one wants to be the holdout in NYC in favor of Trump because the -------- will destroy their lives for having a moral compass. Same thing happened in the George Floyd trial - frightened jurors were compelled into siding with the mob.

The judge has been a stealth prosecutor throughout this case. In any other district he'd be facing serious ethics charges but here he will be regarded as a hero. The jurors will have to go home and face family and friends if they don't convict.

This case will be slaughtered on appeal but that won't happen until after the election. Which is the whole damn point.

Y'all have one legit case against Trump and that's the documents case. The rest are varying degrees of legal BS and ironically the case that is truly absurd has a real shot at conviction.

The rest probably won't go to conclusion until after the election. I'd really like to see Trump go to trial over the documents but of course the prosecution tampered with the evidence so it's now delayed.

How have the elements of the crimes charged not been proven? Use your own big boy words, not someone else's.

The rest are varying degrees of legal BS

How is the conspiracy to defraud and obstruct an official proceeding case "legal BS?" Use your own big boy words and tell me why.

Y'all have one legit case against Trump and that's the documents case

So you think he's guilty of stealing top secret documents from the US government and hiding then next to his toilet, but you're mad he might go to jail for something else. Typical trumper. If that case ever goes to trial you'll be here carrying whatever Trump's water is there too. Bank on it.

Tangerine jesus was hoping for a quick verdict so he could scream it was a political hit job because of how fast it was returned.

Hell they could have him on video telling Cohen to write the check to Daniels, him writing the reimbursement check and telling Weisselberg to write it off as legal fees and Jeff would still be saying it wasn't a crime. Fat Nixon could shoot someone on 5th Avenue and Jeff would still say he did nothing wrong.

The fact that the jury wants to review the testimony of ------ and Cohen indicates they are doing their jobs.

No matter what happens tangerine jesus will be screaming about how it was a witch hunt because that's what liars do...they lie.

#96 | POSTED BY BELLRINGER

There is zero evidence to support that claim. The only reason that trial is delayed is because of a biased judge that is doing everything in her power to drag it out until she dismisses and forces the government to re-file after the election.

#100 | Posted by johnny_hotsauce at 2024-05-30 09:24 AM | Reply

legal experts say that the judge's instructions will be cited as the reason any guilty verdict is reached will be

overturned. They cited precedents, one as recent as 2020.

--of course, we know that won't matter because that action will be put off until after the election..

and even if it were overturned before the election he'll still be called a convicted felon.

cause that's been the point all along proven, beyond any doubt, with the campaign rally outside the court house featuring

De nero and his goomba goons.

he would, if overturned, still be called that here because pathological liars can't stop lying.

CNN not happy with answer to question.

" One thing is clear: the American people do not care. CNN's Harry Enten broke that down, showing the Left's attempt at damaging Donald Trump
through weaponizing our legal system has backfired"

CNN: No Change' in Public Opinion About Trump During Trial

HOST: Why?

ENTEN: Because most Americans don't care that much. They care about the economy, inflation, immigration, and election legitimacy.
