Markets Plummeting; Trump Recession Right Around the Corner
Stocks dropped on Monday as the selling pressures that dragged Wall Street last week persisted, with investors worried about an economic slowdown after President Donald Trump didn't rule out a recession with U.S. tariffs being implemented.

We have an incompetent, cognitively challenged, mentally ill person in charge of the economy.
Of course it's going to crash.
The crash was predicted as being inevitable if Trump got back in.
Because he was and is an incompetent, cognitively challenged, mentally ill sumbitch.

Trump warns the market will crash if he loses. (February 2024) www.cnn.com
... Trump is not just foretelling a market meltdown -- something he, wrongly, forecast in 2020. The former president is predicting the mother of all market crashes if he isn't victorious. "If we lose, you're gonna have a crash like you wouldn't believe," Trump said at a campaign rally on Friday. He went on to say a loss for him would spark "the largest stock market crash we've ever had." ...

All because of the whims of Pres Trump.

The recession will come because of falling consumer confidence, which will dampen spending throughout the US economy, will fall further when more and more government layoffs go through, and those layoffs will ripple into the broader employment base. The results in the US equity markets are just signs of confidence.
Unlike some recessions in the past 50+ years, those losing jobs and reducing spending are people with better, solid jobs with higher pay rates. Those at the low end of the economic scale are already overspending and now have little savings to fall back upon. A broader problem in the job market will make the coming recession harder to correct. The TV anchors and pundits now running the US government have little clue about what to do to fix the problem.
If the economy turns down, and if there is an election in 2026 the MAGA crowd will be thrown out of office far and wide. Sadly the election is no longer a sure thing ...

Sure Eberly - my thinking on this is: 2008 recession - caused by: Housing bubble (markets), Risky lending (roll back of protections, Lack of government intervention), and Inadequate regulation.
Today's downturn and move into a possible recession (or worse) is driven by: Self-inflicted idiocy of tariffs being executed like a sledge hammer. Self-inflicted stupidity of DOGE acting out of massive and total ignorance. An amazingly moronic trade war ((Trump just raised tariffs to 50% for Canadian steel and aluminum)
In other words - this was 100% preventable and self-inflicted by the Moron in Chief. Not by market forces, not by accumulated bad decisions over years. Not by forethought.
Todayy we're facing the results of a conscious choice. Even with all the red light flashing - our President is pushing ahead, foot smashing the pedal to the floor.

Apparently the markets were so strong at the time we hardly noticed. Also most of those gains (and losses) went to the wealthy anyway. As usual.
FTA: From the market lows of 2020 to the peak at the end of 2021, America's stock wealth nearly doubled, from $22 trillion to $42 trillion. The bulk of that wealth went to those at the top, since the wealthiest 10% of Americans own 89% of individually held stocks, according to the Federal Reserve.
#44 | Posted by donnerboy at 2025-03-11 11:03 AM | Reply
BTW - DOGE's idiocy isn't relevant to them accomplishing their true mission. They simply don't care about what the impact is to us.
This was a choice made by Trump to give fElon full access.
Optimist.

The 2022 market drop was still because of COVID.
In 2022, after much pent up demand, Americans began to spend a lot of money and inflation hit.
The Fed hinted they would be raising the prime rate (and continuedd to). Markets reacted immediately.
