This level of uncertainty seems to be what the Republicans want when they propose the elimination of Social Security.

Uncertainty and chaos.

In my instance, can I pay my monthly home equity loan next month, or will I lose my house and become homeless?

The recession will come because of falling consumer confidence, which will dampen spending throughout the US economy, will fall further when more and more government layoffs go through, and those layoffs will ripple into the broader employment base. The results in the US equity markets are just signs of confidence.

Unlike some recessions in the past 50+ years, those losing jobs and reducing spending are people with better, solid jobs with higher pay rates. Those at the low end of the economic scale are already overspending and now have little savings to fall back upon. A broader problem in the job market will make the coming recession harder to correct. The TV anchors and pundits now running the US government have little clue about what to do to fix the problem.

If the economy turns down, and if there is an election in 2026 the MAGA crowd will be thrown out of office far and wide. Sadly the election is no longer a sure thing ...

2008 recession - caused by:
Housing bubble (markets),
Risky lending (roll back of protections,
Lack of government intervention), and
Inadequate regulation.

Today's downturn and move into a possible recession (or worse) is driven by:
Self-inflicted idiocy of tariffs being executed like a sledge hammer.
Self-inflicted stupidity of DOGE acting out of massive and total ignorance.
An amazingly moronic trade war ((Trump just raised tariffs to 50% for Canadian steel and aluminum)

In other words - this was 100% preventable and self-inflicted by the Moron in Chief. Not by market forces, not by accumulated bad decisions over years. Not by forethought.

Todayy we're facing the results of a conscious choice. Even with all the red light flashing - our President is pushing ahead, foot smashing the pedal to the floor.

The Fed hinted they would be raising the prime rate (and continuedd to). Markets reacted immediately.

3. Foreclose on those in default
