My biggest takeaway from the McCarthy era is that fear and political paranoia can easily destroy basic rights.

During the 1950s, Senator Joseph McCarthy ruined lives and jobs by accusing innocent people of being communists without any proof.

This should have taught Americans to always protect the truth and defend free speech.
