... The infectious disease expert, who retired in 2022, was subpoenaed to testify. Days before the hearing, Paul released more than 1,000 pages of diaries Fauci kept during the pandemic. In them, Fauci wrote, in part, about President Donald Trump, calling him "out of control," a "true embarrassment" and "an idiot."

Democrats have criticized the GOP's grilling of Fauci and come to his defense. It echoes sentiments from several leading medical organizations and public health workers.

Medical organizations, advocacy groups back Fauci over Senate hearing

In a letter to the Senate committee, Stefano Bertuzzi, CEO of the American Society for Microbiology, expressed "unequivocal support" for Fauci.

"His career was built on evidence, intellectual rigor and an unwavering commitment to improving people's lives. That record is documented in the scientific literature, reflected in countless advances in medicine and public health and measured in millions of lives saved," Bertuzzi wrote.

Bertuzzi also called Fauci's scientific research "by all accounts and measures, the gold standard."
Anthony Fauci, former director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is sworn in before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on July 29, 2026, in Washington, DC.

Similarly, AVAC, or the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition, said it submitted a letter to the committee ahead of the hearing.

Mitchell Warren, AVAC's executive director, wrote in the letter that the group is "dismayed and disturbed" by Fauci being subpoenaed "in pursuit of questionable allegations."

"We implore the committee to cease its erroneous investigations and harassment of renowned scientists and public servants such as Dr. Fauci, whose career, track-record, and devotion to public health research and development has changed the very course of the HIV epidemic at home and abroad," Warren wrote.

Dr. Georges Benjamin, CEO of the American Public Health Association, told NPR that a hearing like the one involving Fauci, combined with cuts to federal agencies, "all adds up to undermining public health in the U.S." ...

"News Wrap: Fauci rejects Rand Paul's claims on herd immunity

In our news wrap Wednesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci expressed cautious optimism during a Senate hearing about the outlook for a reliable coronavirus vaccine.

But when Republican Sen. Rand Paul argued that herd immunity is working, Fauci shot back, "if you believe that...you are alone."

Kushner predicts much of the country will be 'back to normal' in June (April 2020)
thehill.com

... White House senior adviser Jared Kushner on Wednesday expressed optimism that much of the country could be "back to normal" by June as several states prepare to lift restrictions meant to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

"I think what you'll see in May as the states are reopening now is May will be a transition month, you'll see a lot of states starting to phase in the different reopening based on the safety guidelines that President Trump outlined on April 19," Kushner said on "Fox & Friends."

"I think you'll see by June that a lot of the country should be back to normal, and the hope is that by July the country's really rocking again," the president's son-in-law continued.

The ambitious timeline could be politically risky given that cases in the U.S. are still climbing and health experts have cautioned that parts of the country will have to alternate between imposing strict social distancing measures and easing them back until there's a vaccine in order to avoid new outbreaks. ...

How Jared Kushner's Secret Testing Plan "Went Poof Into Thin Air" (July 2020)
www.vanityfair.com

... On March 31, three weeks after the World Health Organization designated the coronavirus outbreak a global pandemic, a DHL truck rattled up to the gray stone embassy of the United Arab Emirates in Washington, D.C., delivering precious cargo: 1 million Chinese-made diagnostic tests for COVID-19, ordered at the behest of the Trump administration.

Normally, federal government purchases come with detailed contracts, replete with acronyms and identifying codes. They require sign-off from an authorized contract officer and are typically made public in a U.S. government procurement database, under a system intended as a hedge against waste, fraud, and abuse.

This purchase did not appear in any government database. Nor was there any contract officer involved. Instead, it was documented in an invoice obtained by Vanity Fair, from a company, Cogna Technology Solutions (its own name misspelled as "Tecnology" on the bill), which noted a total order of 3.5 million tests for an amount owed of $52 million. The "client name" simply noted "WH." ...

Though Kushner's outsized role has been widely reported, the procurement of Chinese-made test kits is being disclosed here for the first time. So is an even more extraordinary effort that Kushner oversaw: a secret project to devise a comprehensive plan that would have massively ramped up and coordinated testing for COVID-19 at the federal level. ...

Against that background, the prospect of launching a large-scale national plan was losing favor, said one public health expert in frequent contact with the White House's official coronavirus task force.

Most troubling of all, perhaps, was a sentiment the expert said a member of Kushner's team expressed: that because the virus had hit blue states hardest, a national plan was unnecessary and would not make sense politically. "The political folks believed that because it was going to be relegated to Democratic states, that they could blame those governors, and that would be an effective political strategy," said the expert.

That logic may have swayed Kushner. "It was very clear that Jared was ultimately the decision maker as to what [plan] was going to come out," the expert said. ...

Conclusion: Rand Paul's an -------, whose ego is larger than his concern for the safety of America or Americans.

Alex,

As I recall, Trump was largely responsible for making vaccine development a top federal priority through Operation Warp Speed.

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were completed, authorized, and initially distributed under Trump. Biden inherited the program and greatly expanded the rollout.

So criticism of the accelerated development and initial authorization can fairly include the Trump administration. But blaming Trump for every alleged vaccine problem or for the mandates and coercive policies imposed later under Biden makes little sense.

The funny thing is that, at the time, Trump received very little credit while Biden was treated as the hero.

Then, once concerns and problems with the vaccines began receiving more attention, suddenly it was Trump's vaccine.

Dan,

"By the time Biden took over, Trump had politicized masking, distancing, and closures. It became a political act to refuse guidelines."

Then I stand corrected.

Trump actually did more than I thought he did.

So why wasn't Trump given more credit at the time?

Everything you read then was Biden, Biden, Biden. Trump got no credit.

But now you're saying Trump had already shaped the masking, distancing, and closure debate before Biden even took office.

I was trying to give Biden some credit for handling COVID.

Biden did nothing for Covid.

It was a year after the pandemic started before he was president.

At that point people had made up their minds about Covid.

Biden asked MAGA to behave like decent human beings and they did their best to tell him to kill himself.

Yeah but I think they delayed releasing the vaccine so Trump wouldn't get credit.

The move by Pfizer continues the company's push to publicly distance itself from the presidential race.

So the vaccine and the politicization of the vaccine didn't start under Trump.

At that point people had made up their minds about Covid.

They made up their minds when they were mandated to take the vaccine, or they couldn't go to work. Also the false narratives about "you won't catch COVID if you take the vaccine". To his credit Fauci, from his diary, was against such statements.

"Heard nothing praising Trump."

That's because Trump was endorsing behavior that put others at fatal risk. All while secretly getting vaccinated, and getting MONOCLONAL ANTIBODIES when NO ONE was getting that protocol.

"But Biden this and Biden that."

That's because sense is better than nonsense.

Just ask Trump-appointed Dr. Birx, who basically claimed all but the first 100,000 deaths should be laid at Trump's feet. No doubt part of it was politicizing actions like masks or distancing...suddenly, folks didn't want a vaccine, so they could own "teh libz"...all the way to the morgue.

Bill, you are the perfect example of a Trump supporter because 6 years into covid, you are ignorant of Trump's contributions to the covid situation.

Yes, he gets credit for expediting the creation of the vaccine. Truly, that is something he should be especially proud of. Unfortunately he isn't. He did nothing to expedite getting the vaccine out to the public and encouraging them to get vaccinated. Here is a list of things he did about covid

1. he called covid a hoax, (what doesn't he call a hoax?)
2. he said there were 15 cases, soon to be zero.
3. he said the sun would make it go away
4. he suggested treating it with bleach or with light therapy.
5. he and son-in-law Kushner bought up all the masks and personal protective and gave them to red states
6. he developed NO plan to get the vaccine distributed to the public once it got approved.
6. he never encouraged his supporters to get the vaccination.
7. You haven't heard about it because it is not something Trump brags about, and you know he brags about EVERYTHING.

Biden gets the praise because he is the one who got the vaccines out to the public.

... On July 17, President Donald Trump sat for a Fox News interview at the White House. At the time, nearly 140,000 Americans were dead from the novel coronavirus. The interviewer, Chris Wallace, showed Trump a video clip in which Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, warned of a difficult fall and winter ahead. Trump dismissed the warning. He scoffed that experts had misjudged the virus all along. "Everybody thought this summer it would go away," said Trump. "They used to say the heat, the heat was good for it and it really knocks it out, remember? So they got that one wrong."

Trump's account was completely backward. Redfield and other U.S. public health officials had never promised that heat would knock out the virus. In fact, they had cautioned against that assumption. The person who had held out the false promise of a warm-weather reprieve, again and again, was Trump. And he hadn't gotten the idea from any of his medical advisers. He had gotten it from Xi Jinping, the president of China, in a phone call in February. ...

"Complete incompetence:" Biden team slams Trump's COVID work (January 21, 2021)
arstechnica.com

... Just a day into office, President Joe Biden and his administration have unveiled a comprehensive, 200-page strategic plan and over a dozen executive orders and actions to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic currently rampaging across the country.

With the running start, the administration hopes to finally get control over the virus, which has already taken the lives of more than 408,000 Americans. The number of deaths is expected to top 500,000 next month, Biden said in an appearance Thursday to unveil his strategic plan.

"Things are going to continue to get worse before they get better," he said, calling his approach to the pandemic a "full-scale wartime effort."
Square one

The lag between people becoming infected, developing COVID-19, and succumbing to the disease will keep the numbers grim for weeks to come, regardless of new efforts put in place today. But the administration says it's also facing challenges from inheriting the work from the previous administration.

In remarks Thursday, Biden criticized the federal response so far: "For the past year, we couldn't rely on the federal government to act with the urgency and focus and coordination that we needed, and we have seen the tragic cost of that failure." ...

Chan,

I've read your list. Not the first time I've seen it. If I responded I would have to respond to each one. I would have to do a little research to find out what is factual and what is fabricated.

About half of the stuff I see from liberals complaining and blaming Trump is exaggerations, taking stuff out of context, more of a subjective opinion presented as facts or misrepresentations. They are obsessed with Trump and I don't quite understand this OCD. I do find them kind of scary. I know someone who has a neighbor who anytime they see each other, she goes into a Trump rant.

I have no illusions about Trump. However, what is the point now of going down that list? Really?

Makes no difference now, does it?

Now...I care now about Fauci and what's coming out about the lies about where the virus came from, when people knew more...and so on.

I guess I'm more in the present.

Chan,

Based on your comment about ballots, I don't think you're seeing my point.

I wasn't planning to keep discussing this, but here's what I'm trying to say.

I'm glad you didn't have any problems voting. My concern isn't about individual experiences. It's about the system as a whole.

Think about the bigger picture. Millions of uncounted ballots are transported by truck and by air before they're processed. They're uncounted at that stage.

From a logistics standpoint, there are many ways large volumes of ballots could be lost, damaged, or otherwise fail to reach their destination. When we're talking about a presidential election in the most powerful country in the world, I don't think it's enough to assume everything will always work perfectly.

Systems work fine until they don't.

I'm also concerned about situations where one person in a household fills out multiple ballots, potentially denying another family member the opportunity to cast their own vote. I also believe every person should be able to cast their ballot privately and anonymously.

Ballot harvesting is another issue that deserves discussion. Whatever rules are in place should be clear, consistently enforced, and carry meaningful penalties for anyone who breaks them.

Notice that I never used the word "fraud." My point is about logistics and election administration. Given today's technology, I think we should minimize the need to transport large numbers of uncounted ballots whenever possible.

And for people who need flexibility because of work, transportation, or scheduling, we already have early voting in many places to help address those challenges.

Depends on what the voters in that state want. If they want request-only, fine. If they choose universal mailed ballots, fine.

And when my late MIL was near-blind and disabled, she was automatically sent a postcard to REQUEST a mail-in ballot for every election.

With that last part, you're lying again. That's not in the Constitution.

What is in the Constitution is that each State decides how it will run elections.

People do have that right to decide how voting will be conducted, through their State Government.

The right to vote without unlawful discrimination, that is a Federal requirement, but as long as State elections don't run afoul of that law, they are legal from a Federal perspective.

" It's the simple logistics of the risk associated with shipping uncounted ballots."

Which has been going on for over a century, without any incident at scale.

No reason on Earth to make it HARDER for the legal voter to cast her or his legal vote.

I noticed you also didn't comment on the fact if they lose 1000 ballots, they know exactly who those 1000 people are. Serialized, watermarked, and tracked.

Nonsense. I'm very aware you, and no member of team Trump, has ever claimed fraud to a judge.

To do that inside of a courtroom, you need proof.

You have zero. And have had zero since ... Forever.

And here you are, unaware that your own home state has no-excuse absentee ballots.

But you aren't proposing a fix with technology. Your answer is to suppress particular voters and particular votes.

And, surprise surprise: it's exactly the same folks who usually vote against Republicans.

" how many deaths would have occurred if Hillary had won?"

Let's ask Dr. Debra Birx, one of Trump's spokes-doctors.

In a Congressional hearing, she testified-

"I look at it this way: The first time, we have an excuse," Birx said about the initial surge of deaths. "All of the rest of them, in my mind, could have been mitigated or decreased substantially."

So how many deaths under HRC? Substantially less.

so? Of course a Doctor can retrace steps and re-draw a path that they believe would have resulted in fewer deaths....and we can agree on that.

Re 168

Beverly is not happy that there would be most likely be "Substantially less" deaths under Hillary.

He wants a specific number so he can point out that it is impossible to know if a Clinton administration would have responded differently (of course they would have..) or faced different legislative and public resistance to lockdowns and mandates.

It is well known that systematic factors and weaknesses in our healthcare system already existed. And the U.S. death toll was also driven by preexisting chronic health conditions, decentralized state powers, and structural flaws in the American healthcare system that extend beyond any single presidency.

Any president would be challenged. But studies like the Lancet Commission Report estimated that roughly 40% of U.S. COVID-19 deaths could have been averted if the country matched the lower per-capita death rates of other peer industrialized nations.

perhaps you're simply drawing a conclusion that makes you feel better.

How Jared Kushner's Secret Testing Plan "Went Poof Into Thin Air" (July 2020)
www.vanityfair.com

... Worried about the stock market and his reelection prospects, Trump also feared that more testing would only lead to higher case counts and more bad publicity. Meanwhile, Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House's coronavirus response coordinator, was reportedly sharing models with senior staff that optimistically -- and erroneously, it would turn out -- predicted the virus would soon fade away.

"The political folks believed that because it was going to be relegated to Democratic states, that they could blame those governors, and that would be an effective political strategy," said the expert. ...

[emphasis mine]

That logic may have swayed Kushner. "It was very clear that Jared was ultimately the decision maker as to what [plan] was going to come out," the expert said. ...

-So how many deaths under HRC? Substantially less.

I disagree, but not for the reason you might think.

It's not because Hillary wouldn't have taken different steps because I'm confident she would have managed communication better, and managed many things better.

What I'm saying is that I give power to the rednecks who refused to listen to Fauci and anybody else who was trying to help.

People who voted for Trump actually distrust Hillary and democrats more than they actually like or trust Trump.

the wave of ignorance from red state leadership coupled with the onslaught of misinformation that would have been every bit as prevalent with Hillary at the helm as with Trump and the lack of trust in the White House would have been staggering if Hillary had won.

So my point is that Hillary would have done things way better but it wouldn't have mattered. The politicization of COVID was going to happen either way.

According to Pew, 46% of voters used an absentee or mail-in ballot in 2020. Of those, 39% said it was their first time voting by mail.

Now we're supposed to believe those voters would become victims of voter suppression merely because they returned to the same voting method they had always used before?

From my post.

Any president would be challenged. But studies like the Lancet Commission Report estimated that roughly 40% of U.S. COVID-19 deaths could have been averted if the country matched the lower per-capita death rates of other peer industrialized nations.

More from the study:

Trump exploited low and middle-income white people's anger over their deteriorating life prospects to mobilise racial animus and xenophobia and enlist their support for policies that benefit high-income people and corporations and threaten health. His signature legislative achievement, a trillion-dollar tax cut for corporations and high-income individuals, opened a budget hole that he used to justify cutting food subsidies and health care.

His appeals to racism, nativism, and religious bigotry have emboldened white nationalists and vigilantes, and encouraged police violence and, at the end of his term in office, insurrection. He chose judges for US courts who are dismissive of affirmative action and reproductive, labour, civil, and voting rights; ordered the mass detention of immigrants in hazardous conditions; and promulgated regulations that reduce access to abortion and contraception in the USA and globally. Although his effort to repeal the Affordable Care Act failed, he weakened its coverage and increased the number of uninsured people by 23 million, even before the mass dislocation of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has accelerated the privatisation of government health programmes.

Trump's hostility to environmental regulations has already worsened pollution"resulting in more than 22000 extra deaths in 2019 alone"hastened global warming, and despoiled national monuments and lands sacred to Native people. Disdain for science and cuts to global health programmes and public health agencies have impeded the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, causing tens of thousands of unnecessary deaths, and imperil advances against HIV and other diseases. And Trump's bellicose trade, defence, and foreign policies have led to economic disruption and threaten an upswing in armed conflict.

It goes on and on but you think me listing facts from a study is "ranting". So I'm done.

Doesn't that make you thd least big suspicious?

I don't blame him any. They were desperate to find anything at all to nail him on and he gave them nothing. No not suspicious at all. Just sayin

By Trump.

You do realize Trump was the president in 2020.

During Covid.

He was Fauci's boss.

You understand that, right?

@#220 ... I don't blame him any. They were desperate to find anything at all to nail him on and he gave them nothing. ...

Dr Fauci was called to the hearing by Sen Paul who has been reported to have said that he wants to see Dr Fauci behind bars. It's also been reported that Sen Paul even wrote a book about his desire.

The hearing was little more than an ambush attempt of Dr Fauci.

" Danforth takes Dr. Birx's comments which clearly states we could have done better to mean Hillary would have done better but Dr. Birx didn't say that."

It takes an idiot not to believe it.

You've been given a half dozen reasons, and have pretended none of them actually exist.

FFS, even YOU believe HRC would've done better.

If Repubs can get trap fauci into a lie or misstatement in these hearings that is not covered by biden's pardon, which only covers events before the pardon. They could grant him immunity from that and force him to truthfully testify but getting the truth isn't their goal.

Clown,

By mid-2020, Trump was already saying Fauci had made mistakes, but many Democrats dismissed his concerns and continued supporting prolonged restrictions that inflicted serious damage on the economy.

-It takes an idiot not to believe it.

at least you concede it's a belief.

and of course Hillary would have done better things.

But achieve better results? I want to believe that as well. I'm glad I voted for her.

But the morons you think could manage to behave better?

sorry....not putting any belief into that.

But you can put your faith into better choices by trailer trash redneck magats who you believe would have been better at not spreading the disease because they give 2 shits about the example Hillary set for them.

" But the morons you think could manage to behave better?"

I believe the president moves the macro dial, yes.

Gee, it sounds like we've been here before. Too much sand in your ears???

"But achieve better results? I want to believe that as well."

She wouldn't have undermined the science. That's gotta be worth six figures of lives, right there.

And you really need more?!?

" But you can put your faith into better choices by trailer trash redneck magats"

And you're free to believe presidents don't move the needle.

I respectfully disagree.

"I believe the president moves the macro dial, yes."

that's cute

"She wouldn't have undermined the science. That's gotta be worth six figures of lives, right there."

also...very cute.

that's like 2 new rubber duckies you can play with in your next bath.

If you really believed the president moves the macro dial then you'd accept that Hillay would have been so hated, so despised, that Americans would have spit on each other in a closet to ensure they give each other the COVID just to spite her.

"you really need more"??

no, I don't need any more to come the conclusion that you have a pathological desire to be agreed with.

I, OTOH, can live with our difference of opinion.

You can have the last word.

Did you flunk actuarial science in insurance school?

Birx basically blamed Trump for everything over 100,000 deaths.

I was cutting that excess number by 90%.

But Eb knows better.

What a riot. I'm telling the truth, and to Eb, that's PATHOLOGICAL.

Let that sink in.

Birx basically blamed Trump for everything over 100,000 deaths.

Democrats were correct in their criticism of her, she never corrected President Trump's misinformation during live press briefings.
Her presence also lent a "veneer of scientific credibility" to what Democrats thought were dangerous administrative policies.
Finally the for the win she only spoke out after she left the administration, when it was no longer personally or professionally risky, and needed to deflect from any criticism she might face.

Using Brix as evidence isn't actuary science its political hogwash.

Dude, chill.

Your argument has been reduced to MAGA would be greater dividers than President HRC a uniter. That MAGA is so virulent, so spiteful, they'd sacrifice their own kids to the altar of Trump.

So ... I'll give you that one.

" Using Brix as evidence isn't actuary science"

True. That's just straight math, from an expert Donald Trump hired.

Discounting Brix's opinion is ludicrous.
