A question of curiosity for both pro and anti Trump DR scenesters:

Where do you place Trump as a president in relation to Nixon?

#44 | Posted by Karabekian at 2026-10-12 03:22 PM | Reply

Pres Historians rank Nixon low at around 14th, and DJT dead last or near it; some of the conservatives put him in the bottom 5.

Personally, having lived (so far) through both, and as bad as Nixon was a Crook, Warmonger, traitor to the People, and all round low life... he was never as purely evil a POS as is the Gangster Trump, who has completely sold out the country and our allies for his personal gain and his enormous ego.

Tricky Dick was bad enough, but he never slaughtered 100's of thousands of children, mostly by starvation... so he could give himself and his oligarch owners tax cuts.

Prosecuting trump's crimes wasn't about humiliating him stupid.
He could have returned his classfied documents like biden did instead of launching a cover up and getting people to lie for him.

And if we don't prosecute people who attempt a coup instead of conceding an election loss, then we're a banana republic.

I sort of formed my grown up opinion of Nixon from reading some of his own works, along with Hunter S Thompson's book on the 1972 campaign, All the President's Men, and such. If you've never read Thompson's obit of Bixon, I highly recommend it. It's both brilliant and brutal.

"George Bush perpetrated an attack on his own country."

That's a bit over the top.
George Bush did nothing to stop the imminent attack outlined in the August 6 Presidential Daily Brief titled "UBL Determined To Strike in US."
Bush was briefed. Bush did nothing about it.

As you may recall, or more likely don't, the Bush administration was laser-beam focused on making North Korea a key villain in the Axis of Evil. I believe it was a New York Times analysis that found prior to Sep 11, the White House Press Secretary uttered the words "North Korea" 70 times, but "Al Qaeda" or "Osaam bin Laden" just three times.

61 Agreed. Plus, like Trump, he was a cartoonish blowhard. The difference is that LBJ wasn't covered 24/7 in the media with a magnifying glass. If he had been president in the age of the internet, he'd come off pretty much like Trump.

#64 | POSTED BY KARABEKIAN AT 2026-10-12 04:38 PM

LBJ was bad, Nixon was bad, but be serious. Nobody has ever been worse than Trump. Trump has no conscience. No moral code whatsoever.

George Bush perpetrated an attack on his own country. Then set off on an ME adventure that cost billions and hundreds of thousands of lives.

I read that right here. Over and over and over.

I suggested then that history probably won't agree with this version of the facts.

I had sand in my ears, had no problems with fascism, etc...exact same things being said to me today.

"this country won't survive"

#83 | Posted by eberly

Our national standing didn't survive. Our national reputation didn't survive. Our international influence didn't survive. Our national unity didn't survive. This country has been on a backslide ever since republicans lied us into iraq. Then your despicable party outdid themselves by electing trump just to accelerate the destruction.

95 Yeah, at least Nixon had an ethos. I have to strain to think of LBJ as any more ethical than Trump, if only on the basis of the Gulf of Tonkin baloney.

#103

Well, let's brewminate on that:

"I am focusing on a comparison between Lyndon B. Johnson and Donald Trump precisely because the comparison is instructive, not because it is forgiving.

Both men faced credible accusations of exploiting public office for private advantage and both blurred ethical boundaries in ways that troubled contemporaries and later historians.

But the similarities end quickly once scale, intent, and consequence are examined with care."

"History does not judge power by asking whether it was abused at all. It asks how often, how openly, and to what end. Lyndon Johnson exploited his position for personal advantage, and that exploitation deserves scrutiny and condemnation. But it occurred within a presidency that also produced enduring public goods and accepted, however imperfectly, the idea that ethical boundaries existed. Johnson's failures strained democratic norms. They did not redefine them.

"Donald Trump's presidency operates in a different moral register. Personal enrichment is not an aberration or a temptation resisted poorly. It is woven into the fabric of governance itself.

The office is a tool for self-promotion, institutional capture, and financial gain on a scale and with a visibility unmatched in modern American history.

This difference is not one of tone or temperament but instead a difference of category. When enrichment becomes principle rather than deviation, the damage extends beyond any single administration.

This is why historical literacy matters now. Comparisons that collapse distinction into cynicism do not clarify the past; they erase it.

To say that "everyone does it" is to abandon the moral vocabulary necessary for democratic judgment.

History records patterns, precedents, and consequences. It recognizes that abuses accumulate differently depending on how they are practiced and normalized.

Degrees matter because they determine whether corruption is survivable or systemic."

Me neither, actually... his articles are more history than news, but it seems to be a good mix; his Orwellian point about DJT trying to control the past along with the present and the future stood out.

brewminate.com

from 106

"According to the appendix, "The purpose of Newspeak was not only to provide a medium of expression for the worldview and mental habits proper to the devotees of [the Party], but to make all other modes of thought impossible."

Orwell, as so often in his writing, makes the abstract theory concrete:

"The word free still existed in Newspeak, but it could only be used in such statements as This dog is free from lice' or This field is free from weeds.' ... political and intellectual freedom no longer existed even as concepts."

The goal of this language streamlining was total control over past, present and future."

Makes me think of the far Right since Nixon, from Reagan to Tea Party and now the Project25 group who created the monster Trumpenstein.

And now only partially control it.

Reports indicated that this specific financial probe largely stalled due to a lack of evidence.
