Republicans have lost hope for a last-minute surprise that will substantially change midterm math that's increasingly adding up against them.

Instead, they're doing what they can to save themselves.

Many are distancing themselves from some of President Donald Trump's most unpopular policies " in some cases, ones they agreed with only weeks before " as polls show the president is deeply unpopular and at risk of dragging Republican candidates down with him.

Related (also from Politico):

House control all but gone, top Republicans privately concede

Some top congressional Republicans have privately concluded that it is likely impossible for them to keep control of the House of Representatives in the midterm elections, and they are now focused on limiting the scale of the defeat and salvaging the party's Senate majority.

Five senior Republican lawmakers, all granted anonymity to speak candidly about their party's dire position, told POLITICO the House had all but slipped away.

One senior House Republican said the GOP's goal at this point was to "save as many Republican seats as we can." The president, this person said, was not helping.

"President Trump has made this election all about himself," the lawmaker said. "Now we have to survive that political storm."

Let's don't let our guard down too early. The October surprise could come in January when Johnson refuses to seat the newly elected Democrat members of the House based on a charge (suspicion) of fraud that is underway, one that was initiated by Donald Trump. It also means that Johnson could keep his job for months until the matter is resolved in a long string of court filings and appeals all the way up to the Supreme Court which Trump perceives as his "bought and paid for" ace-in-the-hole.

And that's not the only option Johnson has to delay the certification of the votes. There isn't anything Johnson won't try to help Trump hold onto power, last ditch Hail Marys included.

Trump is really slipping in his dotage. A younger Trump would have convinced MAGAts that Haitians are eating their dogs and stealing their geese by August, at the latest. 80-year-old Trump can't even get MAGAts to believe affordability is a hoax made up by the Democrats.

I have no doubt there's something dastardly afoot. There's no way Trump is leaving office, except in waist fetters, and there's little chance of that happening--given his continued support among the evergreen MAGA faithful. I expect industrial-strength, unconstitutional shenanigans, one right after another.

Trump is a long way from being finished with his destruction of the midterms. He could do something so heinous that it would stir up torch bearing riots all across the country as justification for using the Insurrection Act . . . or even declare Martial Law.

What might that heinous(s) acts be? One can hardly imagine. Personally, I would recommend that a certain former President start wearing a Kevlar vest.

That was the overwhelming message in both 2004 and 2008 regarding GWB.

He was revered by the left as the same danger to our constitution as Trump is being revered. GWB was going to declare martial law and remain in office. 100%!!!

I don't recall GWB sending his monkey army of ---- flingers into the Capitol building or openly talking about cheating in elections or declaring Martial law if the opposition wins. Regardless of what the left said at the time.

I am getting old though, so my memory could be failing me. But if my memory isn't failing me (which I don't think it is), then Trump is a lot worse than GWB.

Simple logic. You should try it, eb. Unless your memory is failing you, which I don't think it is.

Scooter Libby took the fall for Cheney. Then Cheney got pis**d at "W" because "W" reneged on a promise to pardon Libby.

Nope. There's nothing in history that indicates that.

In fact, quite a few counterexamples: the Comey announcement about reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails happened on October 28. George W Bush's DWI was leaked on November 2 (he lost the popular vote and barely won the electoral vote, which some people still dispute). Kissinger's "peace is at hand" press conference happened 12 days before the election.

Six Reasons Democrats May Fall Short of a Midterm Landslide in November

But six analysts and party strategists told Reuters several factors could prevent Democrats from turning those favorable political conditions into a landslide, even if the party ultimately makes gains in Congress.

Here are six reasons Democrats may fall short of expectations. ...

Democratic Socialists appear poised to win a significant amount of Democrat and Republican seats.

When Trump refuses to leave office, hiding in his bunker as MAGA surge the grounds.. will the CIA nuke DC?

Imo, he'll need a false flag, maybe one that goes sideways..

Anyhow, Republicans are getting their way so far - the government can barely function whatsoever now.

The bribes and profiteering generates more and more weenie billionaires each day.

We are economically paralyzed and the inflation is just beginning.

Have the Democrats chosen a wave to ride that was too close to the shore, and the wave may not last as long as they need it to last to ride to a win?

But it adds credence to my concern regarding the Democrats.

Are the polls showing how well the Democrats may perform two and a half weeks from now helping or hindering?

Or are those polls discouraging those Democrat voters who have a, let's say, marginal, motivation to vote in an off-year to actually vote?

Ditto, but the inverse for the marginally motivated Republican voters. Are the polls giving them the reason to go out and vote in this off-year?

imo, the Democrats seem to be stuck in celebration mode too early ...

Centrists are in perpetual denial.

Consider the addition of Liz Cheney to turn away Progressives under the guise of "big-tent inclusion".

Both of these "two parties" operate on behalf of the same donors.

Anyone who is involved with Israel is a traitor, for instance.

Our national wealth and global security is being sacrificed for their expansionist project.

If we cement over the billionaire bunkers and nuke Tel Aviv we'd have a chance at bribing US legislators for Americans needs.

"Let the savings hit the floor!"

OR, we replace the two parties with a new party.

I agree with BRASS30. I don't think so either. Unlike a horse race, a win by a nose is NOT as good as a mile. IOW, winning the House, and maybe a couple seats in the Senate, is hardly a tsunami. However, with their new investigative and subpoena power, they can begin the laborious journey of exposing facts to the public that were heretofore not known. ((Maybe even the redacted names in the Epstein files, a subject that is still a hot ticket in the minds of the public.))

I like to say, "The fur will begin to fly." The Democrats will have the power to begin exposing the full extent of the corruption, the illusion of MAGA (Make America Great Again) and the collusion with Russia to weaken, and eventually destroy, American democracy. And we all know, that barely scratches the surface.

So no, it's not too early. It has to start somewhere and losing an opportunity to rid, not just America but also the world, of an insane menace.

57.

Don't misjudge Americans. 77,302,580 of US citizens voted for Trump with eyes wide open less than two years ago, right?

The intensity of Trump's evil hasn't made a dent overall in his polling, I'd say. And just because he's more loathsome doesn't double my vote against him.

It's the price of gas, basically, and its effects, which formerly presidents were said not to affect. This president has done so.

So take away the economy, and there are still tens of millions of our neighbors who'd probably support Trump or his minions again. Lots of em won't tell you. Lots of Americans don't care about sports. Lots don't pay attention to politics. They've been screwed by whoever is in office.

Not good.

We'll see a change in the US when voting participation rates are significantly different from the past. If there's a crazy high turnout this time, that's good.

As for "voted for Trump with eyes wide open, I disagree. Their eyes have never been wide open . . . and won't be until the new House majority exposes the entire depth of Trump's deceit and corruption.

They'll recognize the truth when they see the Republicans rats scurry for cover.

b. the repubs don't need to follow the usual formula for elections because they have zero intentions of allowing the elections to proceed unhindered and free

JPW @ 65

"I love how still . . . "

We won't know that until after the midterm and possibly not until after 2028.

But, in a way, I agree. I've noticed that some people are just numb.

Perhaps this will be the October Surprise (martial law?!):

The best October surprise would be if Donald Trump walked out on stage, removed his make up, took off his wig, and reveal he's been Roseanne Barr this whole time.

Best October surprise ever.

I love it how still, STILL, after these last two years people are acting as if it's business as usual and act shocked that things aren't proceeding along normal timelines or sequences.

Think of the Decorum! The Overton Window!

Honestly. This is why democratic socialists are winning elections.

The old guard democrats are owned by the same people as the republicans.

That's why billionaires have been fighting tooth and nail against them.

It's why democrats are attacking socialist democrats more than their republican colleagues.

The DSA aren't putting up with this ---- and it scares billionaires and their puppets on both sides of the isle.

explain that comment from JPW you referenced. I honestly don't understand what it means.

Is he upset other liberals aren't as pissed off as him?

October surprise? It will be happening in the next day or two. Israel has convinced Trump to attack Iran ... again, but this time they'll be joining in on the destruction. I wonder what false flag they have lined up?

The sooner America can pry itself loose from fascist Zionist influence, the better.

You're a living example of what he means.

You're acting like everything we're living through during these past two years of the Trump administration is "business as usual" and "then act shocked that things aren't proceeding along normal timelines or sequences".

I simply say you're normalizing Trump. But nothing this administration has done is normal.

A lot of people, some people?, think that Trump is just another president and once the election happens in November he'll abide by the results and in 2 years he'll be out of office and then a democrat will help curb the mess he's making.

Let's say the elections won't be rigged and Donny will step aside in 2028. (God forbid he live that long and/or Congress can't impeach and prosecute him.)

Let's say things do proceed along normal timelines and sequences.

I'm not sure this country can recover from a decade of Trump.

He's definitely made our allies and trade partners realize America can't be trusted. He's looted the nation. Drained our armaments, our strategic oil reserves, sold off federal land, destroyed countless social programs, public education is in shambles. Healthcare is more unaffordable. Food is barely affordable and the you have to wonder if you're going to get sick from eating it. Women are state property. Transgenders have been shoved back in the closet. Homosexuals have come under attack because apparently school teachers are all grooming your kids to turn them gay, even BellRinger's friends and family who are teachers are doing it.

We've become a failed national because a bunch of white people who dropped out of high school are angry at the world.

What a shame.

Nothing we're experiencing is normal. Trump has turned his nose up at the judicial branch and if they push him hard enough he just gets his lapdogs on the Supreme Court to approve whatever he wants.

Meanwhile, Congress is on permanent recess.

Don't hold your breath.

We pay Israel billions so they can buy our politicians.

The only people not taking the money are the DSA, and both parties are attacking them.

Do all of you understand just how complete a lame duck Trump will turn out to be if the Dems take both the House and Senate? Perhaps the lamest ever in US history.

#76 | Posted by moder8 at 2026-10-16 03:09 PM | Reply

IF Dems win both chambers of Congress Trump will do everything he can to burn down America.

-You're acting like everything we're living through during these past two years of the Trump administration is "business as usual"

I'll agree that I see more of it as "business as usual" but it's far from "everything".

-I simply say you're normalizing Trump. But nothing this administration has done is normal.

some things ARE normal. But you live in absolutes like most people who are pissed off like you always are......so there is no point is arguing that.

#78 | Posted by eberly at 2026-10-16 03:39 PM | Reply

There's no argument to be had.

We have different perspectives of Trump.

The events set forth by Trump since his second term started is anything but normal.

What are you considering normal?

Perhaps it's gotten lost in the nonstop insanity.

#79 | Posted by ClownShack at 2026-10-16 03:45 PM | Reply

" some things ARE normal"

Not when everything is wrapped in a purposeful lie.

THATs the difference: no president in our lifetimes has relied on lies about EVERYTHING.

It's a malignancy.

-What are you considering normal?

This list includes many normal things.

www.ncsl.org

There are a lot of things done that get little to no attention.

www.hklaw.com

You're unfamiliar with 90% of this stuff.

And I only challenge .001% of the shit to call it normal anyway.

But because I dare put something in context or historical perspective (because nobody else here can do it) you choose to declare that I normalize EVERYTHING Trump does.

Which is absurd. I'm silent on 99% of Trump criticism presented here on this site. My silence is usually agreement. You want to believe it's disagreement.

I don't hide my disagreement. I hide my agreement.

This list includes many normal things.

I got through the first six of the first link. (Honestly, not too smart phone friendly)

The first two were cybersecurity the third was AI. God knows what Trump is doing to our nations cybersecurity and what the AI one was.

The fourth one was about childhood vaccines. Measles for all?

The fifth was deregulation of federal land.

And the sixth was about mortgages.

They were all executive orders. Quick scan of the column, they were all executive orders.

The second link is titled, "Trump's Executive Orders."

This is not normal. Where is congress?

"I'll agree that I see more of it as "business as usual"

Like what?

How many of things that have never been done to this extent before are "business as usual?"

Killing USAID, ICE killing Americans, The President and his family making billions, Hegseth purging the military, toppling Maduro, starting a war with Iran, taking ownership in private industry, starting global trade wars, issuing a coin with a sitting President's likeness, issuing a passport with a sitting President's likeness, selling golden passports for $5M. Which ones are business as usual?

Or do you mean there are little, inconsequential things like naming a post office, and since those still happen... Business As Usual!

One thing is certain we shall learn over the next few weeks/months whether we have a functioning democracy.

On one side we have the dems winning at least the house and maybe the Senate, polling and spending seems to indicate even the republicans have given up on the house and are desperately shoring up what normally would be safe Republican senate seats in SC, Iowa, Ks and Nebraska. If the election goes as predicted or within a reasonable margin of error and we make it through to January and Johnson doesn't fuck us in sitting representatives, we have a minimally functioning democracy

OTOH if Piggy messes with the vote, or the counting of votes, or magat scum refuse to certify elections or ridiculous lawsuits drag stuff out and johnson DOESN'T sit a dem majority House, well, I think our democracy is dead

50-50 at this point

Meanwhile

The U.S. federal budget deficit reached $1.99 trillion for fiscal year 2026, which ended on September 30, 2026.

Key Details (Fiscal Year 2026)

Increase: The deficit rose by roughly 12% (or about $210"$220 billion) compared to the $1.78 trillion deficit recorded in fiscal year 2025

Thanks magat scum

Is there a post office left in America that doesn't have Trump's name engraved on it?

I'm surprised Melania has designers a new uniform for the USPS. Although, come to think of it, she probably doesn't know what the USPS is.

By the way, what happened to the "Trump is amazing and there was a guy named Kennedy, Center"?

True statement.

When I read a thread and agree with the comments, unless I feel like theres something I can add, I rarely comment.

It's why bellringer and billjohnson get so many responses. They evoke a response.

Same with you.
