Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Thursday, August 20, 2026

At a Dearborn, Michigan Town Hall meeting, a pastor of the 180 Church, Lorenzo Sewell, got very vocal about the increasing influence of Muslim culture and Sharia Law in particular. Dearborn has a Muslim mayor. Sewell said, "America, we have lost this city. This is a city that is no longer up under American laws; we are up under Sharia law. We will not have it anymore. Enough is enough." Other protestors against the growing influence of Sharia Law are saying that Dearborn is protecting Muslim agitators and arresting non-Muslims. The outburst, which came amid a series of other anti-Islam protests in Dearborn, vocalizes fears that Muslim populations in Michigan are working to bring their communities more in line with their religious worldview.

Zed,

"We have this one poster who argues I should be terrified of Islam as a threat to Western Civilization."

Right now, atheists and Muslims may not see themselves as being in direct conflict. In Western politics, they may find themselves on the same side in opposition to traditional Christian and Jewish influence.

Just wait.

I think that alliance will become much harder to maintain as Islamic influence grows in Western institutions and communities.

How will atheist parents react if their children start coming home from school praising Islamic beliefs or bringing Islamic religious practices into their homes?

Think that can't happen?

At present, Islam is often far more assertive than modern Christianity about maintaining visible religious practices and seeking accommodations for them in public life.

Some of the people who currently regard Christianity as the greater religious threat, may eventually find themselves confronting a religious culture whose expectations are considerably less compatible and more objectionable to their own secular beliefs. Muslim values are stricter than what they are accustomed to.

Also, Christianity in America generally does not require public rituals performed several times a day that can affect everyone around them. Islam has practices that many Muslims regard as religious obligations, and American religious freedom laws can require governments and institutions to make reasonable accommodations for those practices.

Right now, secular people may be saying, "Why should I worry?"

Some of the same secular people who strongly defend Islamic religious accommodations today may eventually conclude that what they regarded as harmless accommodations was a Trojan horse.

BillJ

By your own words, you were indoctrinated by your parents, your wife has reinforced that faith, and you've been exposed to other faiths and nothing has made you question what you were indoctrinated to believe.

What's more, you don't like Catholicism and are scared ------- of Islam, so you set up defenses to make sure neither intrudes on your way of life.

Sounds to me like your problem is really with Christians who aren't enough like Mommy and Daddy and Mrs. Mommy. Present-day Christians just aren't fighting hard enough. Need to be more . . . manly, muscular. Like Jesus was(n't). Uh-member him?

At present, Mistah Bill, US religious wackos -- particularly those influenced by the Southern Baptist Convention, fundamentalism, and Pentecostalism -- are often far more assertive than everyone else in America about maintaining visible religious practices and seeking accommodations for them in public life, and have gotten elected to enough lofty positions in the US to make a difference for the rest of the country and out of step with the rest of the world.

This has already happened.

Virtually all American Muslims have taken a stand against an ongoing genocide, whereas a significant portion of the Judeo-Christian community are actively supporting it.

One might conclude that the image and integrity of American Judeo-Christians have been irreparably harmed by such a position. Conversely, American Muslims have managed, quite remarkably, to improve theirs. That's not an unfounded opinion- another Muslim- a California woman of Afghani descent, just won a special federal election this evening.

From my point of view, Judeo-Christians have no one to blame for the results of such a drastic change in fortunes over the past several years but themselves.

Bill: My beliefs would qualify me as an atheist to you. Certainly far left. I'll defend Christianity and most other religions all day long. Just don't buy into them.

I'll especially defend religion's mystical branches; I won't abide religion's top-down cults, nor scriptural interpretations that allow only one view -- or that look down on others for not adhering to the same interpretation.

From your own posting, it seems to me that you're of the stripe that says, "I've said the sinner's prayer. I'm going to heaven. Makes me a good Christian."

Good luck with that.

I've lived different places and attended different churches, and since I'm a member of none of their congregations and since I seem to know a lot about Christian theology because of being immersed in it because of my work for 25 years, and since they seem to find that all fascinating because I'm Jewish, and because in person I can be likeable, they tend to open up to me. I also find pastors really interesting to listen to, so if I meet one in a gathering, I'll chat them up and listen to them.

My wife, who when we were raising children was the primary religious influence in the family, had us leave one church because in the context of my going to the pastor for some counseling, the relationship flipped. I'd go to the church for his weekly meetings with me. When my wife needed some pastoral counseling, he wasn't really Johnny on the Spot. She was resentful, and I didn't blame her at all.

That pastor has retired now to be the on-premises chaplain for a wealthy gated beach enclave. Take that for what it's worth.

By the way, the same goes for the very few rabbis I've met in my adult life. [I'm not counting messianic; whole different version of dissembling.]

I'd hope most (non-Orthodox) rabbis are now horrified at what's happening to the Palestinians in the name of Israel. But no way could they tell that to the people in shul. Half the congregation would walk.

Two mixed marriages I know are still going strong decades later: One Muslim and a Methodist and one Jew to a Lutheran. Both couples have five terrific college-educated off-spring today.

I introduced them to each other last century.

At a wedding a few years ago, the groom couldn't stop talking about how much he admired his pastor, and so my friend introduced us and we chatted.

The sky pilot was charming , good looking, and knowledgeable.

And a real smooth talker.

A few weeks after, I was invited to a church social, but I politely declined.

I declined another event and then I was finally left alone (unlike here on drudge.com where the Israelis stalk me).

A few weeks ago I find out that this handsome soul-monger had been living in sin with his girlfriend the past few years. He abandoned his wife and young daughter who is afflicted with Down syndrome (or Mongolism, which is supposedly rarer in girls).

I told my friend what a fine, upstanding Christian paragon of virtue his pastor is, to which my pal could only respond with a humble-mumble-chumble.

More to Bill's question to me:

For years we were members of a smallish mainstream Protestant congregation next door to a prominent seminary, and keep in touch with some of those people. We came to know pastors and pastors-to-be there, as well as theologians. And I have worked on numerous pastors' published books -- self- and otherwise.

One time we returned to our old area to find that a married couple -- co-associate pastors at our old church -- had just had a love child five-plus years older than their two acknowledged sons come back into their lives. Completely unexpected to them. She'd had the child, whom they gave up for adoption.

Then again, this nice young couple were all about sex, drugs, and rock and roll (and God) before entering seminary. He went into church-building back when that was a good industry in the 2000s. For-profit ministry. Church consulting.

My DR seniority doesn't show it, but I've been around awhile. One of my earlier memories is of Danforth, when someone called him a liar for saying he was part of three different entertainment unions for 20 years, or something close to that. He explained calmly that his work or his other pursuits gave him the opportunity to join each, and he never gave up the membership. I think the questioner presumed all the terms were served consecutively. Or that some things just seem impossible or too distant to their experience.

Jared Huffman. My representative to Congress.

In a 2017 interview with The Washington Post's Michelle Boorstein, Huffman identified as a humanist and said "I suppose you could say I don't believe in God." Previously in his career, he had declined to discuss his religious beliefs or apply any label when asked.[54] Huffman is the only elected member of the U.S. House who openly describes himself as religiously unaffiliated and a secular humanist. Huffman is also the only member of Congress who openly rejects the existence of God.[55] He has also stated that he doesn't believe in life after death.[56]

Oops! Shoulda quit while you were behind.

Your historical ignorance is showing again.

Before colonization, Native American and Indigenous societies across the Americas featured highly sophisticated, diverse governance systems ranging from participatory consensus democracies and confederacies to centralized chiefdoms and imperial states. Power was largely decentralized, communal, and rooted in kinship, balancing individual liberty with collective responsibility.

The Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy: Bound by the Great Law of Peace, five (later six) nations in the Northeast shared a federalist model combining regional self-government with a central council.

The Muscogee (Creek) Confederacy: Utilized a town-based system with specialized civil and military leaders, featuring restorative judicial processes aimed at healing community rifts rather than punitive isolation.

Pueblo Communities: Operated through cooperative, consensus-driven systems in the Southwest, often integrating spiritual and civic leadership via respected elders and societal councils.

Mesoamerican and Andean Empires: Societies like the Aztec and Inca developed large-scale imperial states with complex bureaucracies, centralized taxation, extensive road networks, and stratified administrative governance.

Thank you for the opportunity to teach you actual American history.

#67 | POSTED BY LFTHNDTHRDS

Stealing their lands their languages and cultures and herding them into reservations with no resources had nothing to do with their current states of poverty. Right?

Europeans brought you every good thing you have today.

Indigenous peoples of the Americas domesticated and cultivated nearly 60% of the global food supply, including staples like corn, potatoes, tomatoes, squash, beans, and chocolate. These vital crops were developed and shared through thousands of years of sustainable agriculture and land stewardship.

GFY with your white Christian nationalist nonsense and ignorance.

"prehumans survived in a group of only 1,280 individuals."

The previous best estimate for the human "effective population size", from molecular evolution, is about 10,000 to 20,000 humans.

So this new number is smaller, but maybe not as much as you might think.

The genetic diversity of us eight billion humans is accounted for by a population of only a few thousand humans, plus time for many many offspring to be born and accrue some natural rate of mutation.

"The so-called "adhan" is just one sign of how Islam is transforming pockets of the nation. As more Muslims participate in the country's political life, running for office, influencing, and in some cases, even controlling local governments, they are putting their own stamps on their communities: renaming city streets after Arab homelands and mandating Islamic holidays and halal-only lunches in public schools, while even changing noise ordinances to the consternation of many non-Muslim neighbors."

America needs to confront radical Islam as a political movement before it gains any more influence here.

The country should unite against anyone attempting to place Sharia above the Constitution.

We need to recognize it for what it is.

It is an enemy of the Constitution operating right here, right now.

It is an ideology fundamentally opposed to constitutional government and one that is gaining influence here at home, on American soil.

For the sake of our children and the country they will inherit, spread the word.

Get involved.

Clown,

"That's what evangelicals and MAGA want to do with America."

You keep believing that nonsense.

Learn a little about the history of Christianity.

Christianity is one of the more progressive religions working for good on this planet. It is a living, dynamic faith that has continued to shape societies, challenge injustice, and change the way people think about human dignity for nearly two thousand years.

That doesn't mean Christians always live up to their teachings or beliefs. Obviously, they haven't.

But compare Christianity's capacity for reform with religious groups that still defend practices rooted in centuries old ideas about the treatment of women, minorities, and those who question the faith.

Seriously, read something about Christianity beyond the stereotypes.

Christians aren't perfect.

But they worship a Man who is.

Book written in 1970s.... pretty incredible read ..

"Day by day, month by month, doubt by doubt, law and order became fascism; education, constraint; work, alienation; revolution, mere sport; leisure, a privilege of class; marijuana, a harmless weed; family, a stifling hothouse; affluence, oppression; success, a social disease; sex, an innocent pastime; youth, a permanent tribunal; maturity, the new senility; discipline, an attack on personality; Christianity... and the West... and white skin..."

The Camp of the Saints

here's a review.

Equally so, as the Raspail book so clearly portrays, is the extraordinary cultural difference between many peoples and that the only way to maintain a Culture and Civilization that you value and want is to defend it against the opposing human conflicts for domination and control of our world. This Raspail book, using fiction, hallmarks a stark confrontation and truth that no human civilization can survive unless it chooses, defends and values itself . People kill, torture, enslave and destroy each other with regularity. In the long view of human history war and competition for resources defines a part of the human experience and such battles and killing is what, in part, has brought us to what we are today, for better or worse.

You think your current life is all that exists, and it is for you. But if you're a liberal you understand that you are but a blink in the history of time, for all those that came before or will come after.

What world are you going to leave? This isn't a conservative or liberal issue, its do you want your values to survive.
That is the struggle Americans and the Europeans are up against, and right now the answer is no you don't want your values to survive.

In the 90s Americans proclaimed EndOfHistory .... Looks like they were wrong... what are you going to do?

Quick injection of brain power for the dumb fucks, MAGAts and performative fascist Christians: Dearborn, Michigan is an historic Arab American city dating back over a century with immigrants arriving from the Middle East to work for ... guess who ... You are factually incorrect, BillJohnson.

"The law was passed in response to the United States Supreme Court's 1990 decision in Employment Division v. Smith, which held that "neutral laws of general applicability" that burden the free exercise of religion do not violate the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. RFRA requires that strict scrutiny be applied to any law that burdens religious freedom, providing that such a law may be justified only if it is the least restrictive means of pursuing a compelling government interest.
...
"October 15, 2019, federal judge Reed O'Connor ruled that, because of the RFRA, federally funded healthcare insurers and providers must be allowed to deny medical treatment and coverage on the basis of the sex, gender identity, or termination of pregnancy of the person requesting the services, even if the services are medically necessary." --wikipedia

Lee,

"If you're Arab, if you're Muslim, you are my brother and sister and countrymen."

Being fellow countrymen does not mean everyone else must accept having one group's religious practices broadcast into their homes.

Muslims began forming a community in Dearborn during the 1920s, and the "American Moslem Society" established its Dearborn mosque in 1938. The Society's current website claims that its outdoor loudspeakers began operating in 2004. Reporting, however, proves they were operating as early as 1979.

The mosque was broadcasting the Islamic call to prayer over outdoor loudspeakers five times a day beginning at 5:30 in the morning. Residents said it could be heard half a mile away.

That history illustrates the point of this thread. As they have grown in numbers and political influence, they have begun pushing their worship and culture onto everyone else. Private worship is a constitutional right. Broadcasting a religious declaration throughout the entire neighborhood forces nonbelievers to listen, whether they wish to or not.

Muslims have the same constitutional rights as Christians, Jews and everyone else. They do not have a special right to ignore noise laws or require an entire neighborhood to accommodate their prayer schedule. Neither does any other religion.

America should welcome people who want to become Americans while retaining their personal faith and heritage. But assimilation also means accepting that public life is governed by the Constitution and laws applied equally to everyone. Bringing your culture to America is one thing. But expecting everyone to submit to your religious practices is another.

We need to nip this in the bud now before they become politically entrenched in American society.

Other countries demonstrate how difficult such demands become to reverse once government officials are afraid or politically unwilling to say no.

The call to prayer is only one example of religious practices and demands being pushed beyond the Muslim community and imposed upon the public. Read this entire thread and follow the links for further examples and supporting information.

I came across a bunch of robed African American Muslims walking down the street. I asked them "Watup- you guys going to the mosque for your morning prayer?" They said, "No, we're actually returning from the mosque after the all-night prayer. We gonna eat and then go back to the mosque to pray."

Dan,

As a Christian, I accept that America has no state religion.

America is not governed by laws extracted from the Bible, the Quran, or any other religious book.

That works both ways.

My secular political views about America are not necessarily governed by my religious beliefs.

Christians do not get to impose biblical law on everyone else, and Muslims should not get to impose Sharia law on everyone else.

There are radical Islamist movements that openly advocate bringing Sharia into government and public life. That is what concerns me.

Muslims are free to practice their religion in their mosques, in their homes, and publicly, just as Christians are free to practice and express their faith. But religious freedom does not mean the right to impose religious law or religious requirements on everyone else. I'm not referring to simply letting people know your faith.

Christians have had generations in America for the boundaries between religion and government to be fought over, challenged in the courts, and defined. Living in a pluralistic society means coexisting with other religions and with people who have no religion at all.

Muslims in America have the same religious freedom, but they also have to accept the same constitutional limits. Some Muslims come from countries where Islam has a much greater role in government and public life. That doesn't carry over to America. Here, when religious demands cross constitutional boundaries, the courts will determine where those boundaries are.

When any religious group pushes beyond those limits and attempts to use government to impose its religious beliefs on others, the courts will remind them where those limits are.

My concern is that some Americans who are strongly anti-Christian and anti-Israel may become so eager to oppose Christians and Jews that they excuse or support demands from Islamic groups that they would never tolerate from Christians.

And one day they may realize that acquiescing to those demands was a big mistake.

"As a Christian, I accept that America has no state religion."

Christmas is a national holiday. Name a belief other than Christianity whose most sacred day is a National Holiday.

"Christians do not get to impose biblical law on everyone else"

That doesn't stop them from trying. Heck, they'll literally MISINTERPRET the Bible to justify their fascist actions. For example, the Bible talks about "the quickening" as the beginning of life; fascists will overrule God to say moment of conception.

"There are radical Islamist movements that openly advocate bringing Sharia into government and public life."

And there are radical Christian movements who believe husbands should be able to strike their wives, and every household should have only ONE vote: the man's. Frankly, neither will get any traction.

"Religious freedom does not mean the right to impose religious law or religious requirements on everyone else."

So you believe a woman should decide whether she gets an abortion?

"Muslims in America have the same religious freedom, but they also have to accept the same constitutional limits."

Can you show us a single current instance of Muslims getting MORE Constitutional rights than you? Please be specific.

"Here, when religious demands cross constitutional boundaries, the courts will determine where those boundaries are."

Yep. And if you remember, SCOTUS ruled Hobby Lobby didn't have to pay for women's reproductive services, since the owner of Hobby Lobby claimed it was against his religion.

"My concern is that some Americans who are strongly anti-Christian and anti-Israel may become so eager to oppose Christians and Jews that they excuse or support demands from Islamic groups that they would never tolerate from Christians."

Well then, the answer would be to give them no future reason to distrust you or hate you. Start working alongside, and stop called Muslims "them".

Treating minorities like crap is never a good idea, especially if folks who look like you are destined to be in the minority.

Dan,

"And there are radical Christian movements who believe husbands should be able to strike their wives, and every household should have only ONE vote: the man's. Frankly, neither will get any traction."

There are radical Christian groups that hold those beliefs and I oppose them. If Christians demanded that husbands be legally permitted to strike their wives or that women lose their individual voting rights, I would fight those demands just as vigorously. At present, however, it is highly unlikely that they will be petitioning the courts to have either belief legally recognized.

We don't protect constitutional rights by waiting until a movement has enough power to take them away. We proactively protect those rights by confronting unconstitutional demands while they are still developing and applying the same laws to every religion.

Pointing to Christian extremism does not answer concerns about Islamic extremism.

It confirms why every religious movement seeking power over other people must be opposed .

Dan,

"Christmas is a national holiday. Name a belief other than Christianity whose most sacred day is a National Holiday."

Christmas is a federal holiday, but that does not make Christianity the state religion or require anyone to worship. Christmas has also become a cultural holiday celebrated by many people who are not practicing Christians. Christians themselves are not required to attend church, put up a tree or exchange presents.

Likewise, Muslims are free to worship in America. My objection is more specific. When a religious message is amplified into surrounding homes and neighborhoods, it must obey the same noise laws governing everyone else. Hearing the call to prayer does not make someone a participant, but people should not be forced to hear amplified religious broadcasts that violate local ordinances.

Should a Christian church be permitted to broadcast its Sunday morning sermon over outdoor loudspeakers into surrounding homes? Of course not. The same standard should apply to a mosque.

"So you believe a woman should decide whether she gets an abortion?"

I have answered this before. Yes. I thought reversing Roe v Wade was a mistake. I believe abortion is morally wrong, but from a secular legal standpoint, the government should leave that decision to the woman rather than impose my moral beliefs upon her. She must make that decision and live with its consequences.

"Can you show us a single current instance of Muslims getting MORE constitutional rights than you? Please be specific."

Did you listen to the video attached to this thread?

No group possesses more rights than provided by the Constitution. The concern is officials who sometimes protect or enforce those rights unequally.

The current Dearborn video contains allegations of unequal treatment and an attempt to impose Sharia Law .

One documented Dearborn example is Bible Believers v Wayne County. At Dearborn's 2012 Arab International Festival, a hostile crowd threw objects at Christian speakers. Law enforcement responded by ordering the speakers to leave under threat, instead of protecting their constitutional right to free speech. The Sixth Circuit ruled that officials had violated the Christians First and Fourteenth Amendment rights by permitting a hostile crowd to silence them.

That is not an allegation from a video. It is an actual finding by a federal court.

"Treating minorities like crap is never a good idea."

Have I suggested that Muslims should be treated like crap?

Muslims do not need to abandon their faith or private traditions. Like every other religious group, however, they may need to modify public traditions that conflict with existing laws or the rights of their neighbors.

Living in a free country without an established religion means that every faith receives the same protection, no faith receives governmental preference, or the right to impose its religious practices upon the surrounding community.

The call to prayer is essentially a church bell

Actually its not, its electronically amplified. Also it shoudn't happen between the hours of 7am and 7pm.

My basic premise is if its amplified electronically or through speakers it should be outlawed.

And I don't care the religion, I am not a religious person. But you'd have to be an absolute tool to imply they are the equivalent.
