US and Greenland Reach Agreement for Military Presence

The US, Denmark and Greenland reached an agreement giving the United States permanent access, basing and overflight rights in Greenland, along with the ability to establish additional US military installations.

Trump posts about a "new" deal with Greenland and Denmark which appears to be just about exactly the same as our current deal with them, but nobody tell him that.

I agree this is an excellent agreement.

But did Pres Trump have to push away our allies in order to attain this agreement?

Yes, we now have this agreement regarding Greenland, but the United States has become more isolated as a result of Pres Trump's tactics in attaining this agreement.

The threats he made will take years, maybe even decades, before our [former?] allies regain their former level of trust in us.

All along this timeline, Denmark was willing to talk and negotiate what they just agreed to. Pres Trump did not need to take the hard line with them.

So, yes, Pres Trump's bombastic approach resulted in something good for the US, but was the road he chose to get there the proper road to take?

The result does not always justify the means.

Due to climate change, the Arctic is now in play militarily.

Ignoring (for now) that this agreement still has to be approved by the governments of all three countries, there are two pertinent questions:

1. What PRECISELY is contained in this agreement?

2. What is new/different from the previous agreement that was still in place?

3. The military did not want any other bases on Greenland. We are able to complete our mission on Greenland as it is.

If this "deal" is anything like our "deal" with Venezuela, Denmark should run

If you haven't heard we are

1. Taking revenue from Venezuela's sale of oil, gold and other natural resources and possibly other resources
2. Putting them in undisclosed financial institutions, reporting was the money initially went to Qatari banks
3. There is no audit of the money. We, ie. Congress has no idea where the money is, how much money is there, how much is going back to Venezuela, how much is going to third parties. ie the Piggy family
4. Our Defense Department, contrary to law has entered an agreement with famously corrupt Venezuelan businessman (investigated by multiple countries for money laundering) to develop the "oil industry" in Venezuela. If you don't understand how bad it is for the DoD to have a source of income separate from Congress I don't know what to say
5. The corrupt Venezuelan regime remains in place, remains oppressive and remains illegitimate
6. The people of Venezuela hate this arrangement

Indeed, Denmark and Greenland were willing to negotiate from the very beginning.

All Pres Trump's bombastic approach did was generate longer-term issues with our allies.

And, btw, we still do not know the details of what was agreed upon, and how it is better than the 1951 agreement that was in place.
