Florida's proposed property tax cuts rely on a population boom that has slowed dramatically
theconversation.com

... From 2020 to 2024, Florida's population grew by 8.5%, from 21.6 million to 23.4 million.

This is nothing new: The state's warm weather, amenities that include world-class golf courses and beaches, and lack of income tax have long attracted newcomers, so Florida often leads the U.S. in population growth.

But recent data suggests that population growth may be slowing. ...

In other words, the tax collector would deduct the exempted amount from the assessed value of a homesteaded property, and the property tax rate would then be applied to that lower number.

Supporters of the tax cut argue that reduced tax revenue would be recouped by the continued arrival of new residents. These newcomers would be buying homes at the usual property tax rates, with an exemption of only $50,000. After four years, that would increase to $250,000. It's also possible that the proposed tax cuts might attract new residents.

If Floridians vote for this exemption in November, the state's continued population growth would be vital to maintaining local and state government budgets. ...

"Colin P. Clarke of the Soufan Center, who has testified before Congress as an expert witness on terrorism, told the Post,

"This is the politicization of intelligence, and it's dangerous because what they're doing is basically playing partisan politics with counterterrorism, and only looking at a sliver of the overall threat."

Even more troubling, the Trump administration's push to link "antifa" to international terrorism is coming from counterterrorism czar Sebastian Gorka.

Gorka is a longtime Trump cheerleader and former conservative media figure with a history of promoting extremism.

He is a former Fox News contributor who was a member of a Hungarian group designated as Nazi-allied by the U.S. government during World War II.

Gorka previously complained about the Department of Homeland Security warning about violence from the extremist right-wing sovereign citizen movement and was fired from the FBI for Islamophobic rhetoric.

In one memorable comment in 2017, Gorka claimed that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton had committed treasonous acts and said she should face similar consequences to spies Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who "got the chair."

"Yet while Trump and his team have singled out purported violence from the left, they have given official blessings and support to right-wing terrorism.

For instance, former leader of the right-wing Proud Boys militia movement Enrique Tarrio was convicted of sedition against the government for his role in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol " and Trump pardoned him.

Unable to silence domestic dissent, Trump is trying to get the world to give him a boost.

But it doesn't appear to be working."

Neighbors witnessed more than what the MSM are reporting.

Elaine has such astonishing timing.

Probably because of the new Chinese Hormuz shipping lane using her family business.

More: Sari Bashi, the executive director of the Public Committee Against Torture in Israel, said publishing the photo itself constituted a war crime, because of the prohibition under international humanitarian law against depicting prisoners or detainees in humiliating states.

"There's the posting, and then there's what it appears to show," she said. That, too, may be a war crime, she said: "The way in which he was confined raises strong concerns that the method of confinement was a form of punishment that could amount to cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment, or even torture," depending on how much the man suffered.

Israeli soldiers have frequently posted apparently incriminating photographs and videos of themselves during the war. Rights groups say it reflects a cultural shift in the military that is at odds with its insistence that such incidents break with its rules and norms.

"The soldiers are taking their cue from the highest levels," Ms. Bashi said. She recalled that the defense minister, Israel Katz, had met with and was said to have apologized to five reservists after charges were dropped against them in a case involving the abuse of a Palestinian prisoner who suffered broken ribs, a punctured lung and a torn rectum.

"If I were a foot soldier," Ms. Bashi said, "I would think this is all OK and even desirable."

Oneg Ben Dror, a project coordinator for Physicians for Human Rights-Israel, who also said the published photo was evidence of two war crimes, said the mistreatment depicted was exceptional only because it had been so clearly documented. Thousands of Palestinians have testified to having been tortured in Israeli prisons and military camps, she said.

"It's not a unique case," she added. "This time, the soldiers took a photo of it."

Amani Sarahneh, spokesperson for the Palestinian Prisoners Association, said the photo showed how Israeli soldiers acted with impunity and underscored the "violence and brutality" that detainees have endured.

She also argued that the original dissemination of such a photo was "an effort to shape public consciousness through intimidation and psychological deterrence by using images such as these and the impact they have on Palestinians more broadly."
