... For decades now we've documented how while "smart" TV makers are obsessed with making money off of in-home surveillance (which is now more profitable than the actual TV), they do an abysmal job protecting the data they collect. They also routinely don't respect consumer choice when users say they don't want to participate in the full scope of hyper-commercialized mass surveillance.

That latter point is central to a new study out of Northeastern that conducted 5,943 experiments across twelve commercial "smart" TV devices. The researchers found that most smart TVs utilize automatic content recognition (ACR), a technology that captures audio or video snapshots of viewed content and then monetizes that data to help build personalized profiles of viewers.

TV makers insist that users are supposed to be able to opt out, but the choice simply doesn't work across a large segment of TVs. Companies like Vizio simply ignored the consumer requests entirely more often than not:

"We find that the advertised ACR opt-out fully suppresses ACR-attributable traffic on only four operating systems; on Samsung Tizen traffic consistent with ACR activity persists in more than 60% of evaluated scenarios, and on Vizio SmartCast a content correlated endpoint hosted on Amazon Kinesis continues to receive traffic in 100% of opted-out scenarios."

These companies have been awful for a long while now, and U.S. regulation of the sector has varied between soggy and inconsistent ...

imo, if the Democrats actually take over both Houses of Congress, they might be in trouble because they will not be able to pass any laws because of the Trump veto.

Trump says he is prepared to use "tremendous powers" if Democrats take control

... and that is weird ... why?

Maybe because of things like this?

Georgia's GOP House Speaker says vote-by-mail system would be 'devastating to Republicans' (April 2020)
thehill.com

..."... a multitude of reasons why vote by mail in my view is not acceptable," [Georgia state House Speaker David] Ralston went on, before adding "the president said it best, this will be extremely devastating to Republicans and conservatives in Georgia."

"The things they had in there were crazy. They had things, levels of voting that if you ever agreed to, you would never have a Republican elected in this country again," Pres Trump said. ...

Might that unspecified and unsubstantiated reason be the cause of MAGA apparent dreadful fear of mail-in ballots?

... A person in Washington state has died from bird flu after exposure at an infected dairy farm, state health officials reported Sunday. It marks the third human bird flu death in the US since a strain of highly pathogenic (H5) avian influenza (HPAI) made the unprecedented jump from wild, migratory birds to dairy cows, which was first reported in the US in March 2024.

The person who died was a Yakima County resident and was said to have had underlying health conditions, which could have made the person more vulnerable to the infection. ...

In all, three people have tested positive for bird flu in Washington since the virus was reported in dairy cattle in the state on October 8. All three have been in Yakima County. While announcing the death on Sunday, officials also reported the third case. That case, like the first case, was in a person who had exposure to an infected dairy herd in the county. Both people have reportedly not experienced severe illness nor been hospitalized.

Since the October 8 report of infected herds, Washington state has had 40 detections of bird flu in dairy cows, according to the US Department of Agriculture. Most of those have been in Yakima County, which has reported detections in 33 herds.

This year, the USDA has reported 134 cases of bird flu in cattle, including cases in Texas, Washington, Idaho, Utah, and Kansas. The USDA lists no other reports of cases in other domestic livestock, including swine. But the virus has continued to spread in other wild and captive mammals. A report last month from ProPublica revealed that the virus is raging on a mink farm in Utah. The report raised alarm because mink is a species that could give the virus opportunities to mutate to better spread among humans.

To date, no human-to-human transmission of HPAI has been reported from the over 70 human cases detected since 2024. ...

Child Abuse in Islam
islamqa.org

... Where does the issue of sexual child abuse fit into Islam? What is Islam's stance on this? Is it mentioned in any hadith or verses from the Quran? What are the punishments for the abusers? I myself was a victim for 15 yrs by various people. I am finally at a point in my life where I've stopped "questioning" Allah, and am able to say "Alhumdolillah" and accept my fate as the will of Allah. Still however, I am sometimes overwhelmed ... what can I do (zikr) to help myself through psychologically and emotionally draining moments? I am also frequently plagued by nightmares, what should I do for those? Finally, is it considered better to not share your dreams (good or bad) with anyone? JazakAllah khair..

Answer:
Abuse of anything, (inanimate or animate, human being or animal) at any level is haraam (strictly prohibited). If a person is convicted for such a crime, he/she will be charged and dealt with appropriately. It is unfortunate that you have become a victim of abuse for which we deeply regret and sincerely sympathise with you.

Your questioning of Allah was probably due to thinking that was the decree of Allah and that being your fate. That is not so. Allah never decrees abuse.

Allah's knowledge is perfect and absolute. He knows ahead of time what is to happen, not that He made it happen.

The abuser will be punished by Allah, your approach and change of attitude is therefore appropriate. Looking back may not assist you in any way especially when it is not of your own doing. It will only bring grief and agony.

You should be optimistic and look for bright prospects in life within the framework of Shariah. Rasulullah (SAW) said, Lighten your heart often (Abu-Dawood). That may be achieved by engaging in something that is permissible but interesting to you, especially heart and mind consuming. Train yhourself never to turn back.

Look forward and advance.

and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

@#20 ... The Archdiocese of New York recently agreed to an $800 million settlement with roughly 1,300 survivors of clergy sexual abuse. ...

Archdiocese of New York reaches $800M settlement with 1,300 survivors
www.usatoday.com

... About 1,300 survivors of clergy sexual abuse have unanimously agreed to an $800 million settlement with the Archdiocese of New York, marking one of the largest payouts by a Catholic diocese in the United States.

The agreement follows more than seven years of litigation stemming from claims filed under New York's Child Victims Act, or CVA, which changed the state's strict statute of limitations on sexual crimes against children and opened up a one-year window to revive past claims of any age. Jeff Anderson & Associates, which represents 300 abuse survivors, announced on Oct. 24 that all claimants had agreed to the settlement plan. ...

For years, Catholic dioceses across the country have paid hundreds of millions of dollars to resolve clergy sexual abuse lawsuits. To manage and settle these lawsuits, some have declared bankruptcy.

New York and other states have enacted laws that temporarily enabled victims of child sexual abuse to file lawsuits over decades-old crimes. These laws have pushed over two dozen Catholic dioceses to seek bankruptcy protection in recent years, according to Reuters.

The $800 million agreement with the Archdiocese of New York ranks among the largest clergy sex abuse settlements in U.S. history. It is second only to the $880 million settlement reached by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 2024.

In June, the Archdiocese of San Francisco announced a $395 million settlement with about 530 people who said they were abused as children by priests. In December 2025, a federal judge approved a $230 million settlement between hundreds of victims of clergy sexual abuse and the Archdiocese of New Orleans, NOLA.com reported. ...
