Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

The dearth of information about Robinson's political views has suggested to some researchers of online culture and shootings that there may not, in fact, be much more to Robinson's alleged violence than a single-issue grievance. They say that one particular piece of information shared in the charging document lends support to this theory.

FTA:

For researchers who examine how online culture manifests in the real world, this evidence strongly reinforces their analysis that Kirk's alleged shooter was obsessed with what some call the "performance of violence." They say that the use of online memes that are inscrutable to a general public likely was intended not to signal any political tendencies. Rather, these were meaningless in-group jokes primarily circulated among young, extremely online gamers; and, they are emulative of other acts of violence that have succeeded in stirring up discourse.

"If this guy had any clear intention, any clear operational goal, the fact that you, me and a ton of other people are sitting around and going, what does this dumb stuff [that] this 22-year old, online-poisoned, goober wrote on a bullet casing have to say about his politics?" said Elliot Chandler, a counter-extremism researcher. "Hey, mission accomplished, man. Like, hey--he got us."

PBS News is doing more to expose the facts than the FBI ...

Many young extremists who grew up on social media and never knew life without school shootings now see public violence as a way to go viral.

So the chaotic confusion we are seeing right now is possibly by design.

According to people familiar with the matter, who were not named in the report, the use of Trump's name is part of Robinson's broader digital footprint being looked at.

His Steam account, which has been active for 11 years, includes thousands of logged gaming hours and links to an account believed to belong to his partner, per the report.

Robinson's account is said to have showed heavy engagement with online communities and subcultures.

OpEd - PERSPECTIVE: The Real Threat to Democracy Isn't One Act of Violence. It's Our Reaction
www.hstoday.us

... The assassination of Charlie Kirk is a jarring, deeply painful moment for the country"no matter where you fall on the political spectrum. Tragedy invites emotion. That's human.

But history warns us: the greater threat to our democracy often isn't the act of one individual -- it's how the rest of us respond.

"If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher."
-- Abraham Lincoln

Lincoln knew that America's undoing wouldn't come at the hands of a foreign army -- it would come from within. From division. From fury masquerading as justice. From mobs who believe their cause is righteous enough to burn the rules down.

"There is no grievance that is a fit object of redress by mob law."
-- Lincoln again

In the days of Lincoln, a mob meant fire in the streets.

Today, it can mean fire online"viral outrage that moves faster than facts, punishes with no due process, and multiplies the worst instincts of the crowd.

The digital mob doesn't need torches. A trending hashtag can destroy reputations, fuel conspiracy theories, or incite real-world violence in a matter of hours.

In many ways, it's more dangerous than a mob in the square"because it feels bloodless, distant, and justified.

The Founders saw this coming in their own way.

"Liberty is to faction what air is to fire ... "
-- James Madison, Federalist No. 10

They knew that freedom would naturally give rise to conflict"and that's not a flaw, it's the design. But when factionalism is fed by unchecked emotion and echo chambers, it turns combustible. The purpose of our Constitution was to contain those flames"not fan them.

Even George Washington, in his Farewell Address, warned that the endless back-and-forth domination of opposing factions could rot a republic from the inside. He called it what it was: a "frightful despotism."

This is not a moment for escalation, for vengeance, or for gleeful tribal score-settling.

That's not justice. That's collapse. ...

"Accused Kirk shooter used "Donald Trump" alias on Steam

Also of interest: "The report further noted that other games Robinson played frequently included Pictopix, Deep Rock Galactic, Viscera Cleanup Detail (a game where players clean up sci-fi carnage) and PowerWash Simulator."

I am not sure how the MAGA set will turn this into a "radical liberalization," but be ready."

boingboing.net

So apparently "Donald Trump" was all over Steam and other sites.

Senator Urges Valve to Address Extremist, Hateful' Content on Steam
Updated November 17, 2024

Sen. Mark Warner says lax enforcement of rules by social media platforms leads to toxic social environments that elevate harassment and abuse.'

Senator Mark Warner has urged leadership at Valve to respond to allegations that 1.8 million pieces of extremist or hateful content have been identified on gaming platform Steam.

In a recent report, the ADL's Center on Extremism (COE) claims to have identified 1.5 million unique users and over 73,000 groups who used at least one piece of potentially extremist or hateful content.

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an organization founded to combat antisemitism and other forms of discrimination, claims it included more than 458 million profiles, 152 million profile and group avatar images, and 610 million comments in its dataset.

Pepe the Frog and swastikas are allegedly the most common extremist symbols spreading on the platform, accounting for 54.6% and 9.1% of the detected symbols, respectively.

The ADL claims it also identified 15,000 public accounts using symbols from ISIS, Hezbollah, and Hamas in their profile pics. The group also claims to have identified "hundreds of accounts" using images of terrorist attackers like Anders Breivik, who killed 69 people in an attack on a summer camp in Norway in 2011.

The organization also highlighted cases of users posting extremism-linked content on Steam before committing attacks of real-life violence, such as an 18-year-old white supremacist who attacked a cafe in Turkey in August. In addition, it found 18,352 groups that had potentially extremist or hateful keywords on their group profiles, such as "shekel" and "white power."

Charlie boy has been wearing Pepe the Frog costumes since he was 14.

www.reddit.com

"Squatting low in a black tracksuit and with a flat cap pulled over his eyes, Tyler Robinson looks at first glance like any other teenager.

But to the niche and often dark corners of the internet where Mr Robinson appears to have spent much of his time, the suspect in the Charlie Kirk killing is performing a so-called slouched "Slav squat".

The pose and the clothes he is wearing in the photo, shared proudly by his mother, form the basis of an internet meme that has long been associated with the far-Right."

Yikes, as a society we've become blase to mass shootings, so political shootings may be the best way for shooters to make a name for themselves and to be remembered:

Senters said he worries that the duration of discussion about Robinson, his potential political leanings and a motive, may have illustrated a more potent way for aspirants to this disturbing legacy.

"If you look at how long we've been talking about the Charlie Kirk shooting, there is perhaps a worrisome thought that can form that, oh, if someone is looking to sort of make their name in this online shooter space, then maybe a targeted political shooting is now a better way to do that than a mass shooting," he said, "because we've become so sort of like inculcated to the tragedy of mass shootings that [they take] up space and the mass discourse for a handful of days before we all move on to the next thing."

Valve Corp.'s Steam video-game platform

There's a difference between the platform and its forums. Which was full of Trans and TransDIY, as I stated.

For instance Tyler Robinson played the "Furry Shades of Gay" porn video game.

Sounds like it, but then again they didn't assassinate anyone.

It cute you three are doing the chinese fire-drill about a forum I told you about the afternoon of the assassination 8 days ago.

Can you say "narrative collapse syndrome"

How do you say, 'cheesy, verbose, incoherent, self-serving analysis' in Chinese?

That you had previously mentioned a particular forum has nothing to do with the shooter using 'Donald Trump' as his handle, or that he spent upwards of 5,000 hours there.

Your preening self-importance on these pages is... disturbingly embarrassing for you, or at least it should be.

Yeah.

This assassination is an indicator of how low the United States has dropped to.

Killing a person just because you do not like the views that person states?

That is not a good sign for the future of Democracy in the Country.

Evidence shows him to be steeped in radical leftism and he developed such a hatred for Kirk that he planned and carried out an assassination and even planned an escape.

Nothing complicated about it at all.
