Protecting whom?

Whom is at risk from ICE.

When I go back to the US, ICE is the least of my worries.

They are federal agents doing the work of the federal government. They are enforcing federal policy. If you don't like the policy, don't blame ICE, blame the people who creates the policy.

The anti-ICE stance is just baffling to me. Would it better if the agency was simply ignoring US policy?

I'm not sure what you're referencing. ICE is simply enforcing policy. If there is a war, it's a war defending US policy against those who would defy it. No different than any other Federal Law Enforcement agency.

Police do wear masks in high-risk situations. Judges are appointed or elected officials-their identity is known. Same with prosecutors employed at some level of government.

They do have warrants. When ICE conducts a raid, a warrant is required.

And if ICE is bad, when did this happen? Was it from ICE's inception in 2002? Or is it just since Trump directed them to enforce immigration policy writ-large, rather than focusing on deporting only criminals, as Obama did?

At least a handful have been documented. Small children born to illegal immigrants within the US. That makes the kids US citizens, but the parents are not. The kids have every right to be here. The parents do not. So, what does the US government do?

Even legal residency is not subject to the constitution. Non-citizen residency is a function of policy. That policy could change at any time.
