A deal has been reached in the Senate to fund the government through January 30 in a major sign the shutdown is poised to end, according to a source familiar with the matter. The chamber is set to vote tonight, and the source said there are enough Democrats to advance the plan.

They still have to vote, but the Deal looks like:

"The deal includes a reversal of Trump's firings of federal employees during the shutdown and provisions to prevent such actions in the future, the source said. It also would ensure food stamps are funded thorough fiscal year 2026."

I enjoyed hearing Trump say the country is doing great during the football game. I don't think I remember him mentioning the shutdown, so it's probably not a priority for him, like armed forces recruitment is. During the shutdown.

"At least 10 Senate Democrats are poised to support a procedural motion to advance a package of spending bills and a short-term funding measure through the end of January, multiple sources from both parties told Axios.

The deal includes a December vote on a Democratic proposal to extend ACA tax credits for one year, multiple sources said. It would take 60 votes to pass."

I'm not there yet.

I view this as those Democrats realizing that Americans are suffering and they want to help Americans.

Yeah, I do realize that there are some hardline Democrats who say that the Dems should not care about Americans at this point, but should continue fighting the GOP so that the full effects GOP policies will be felt by Americans.

But the Dems seem to care about Americans more than the GOP does.

How all this moves forward might be interesting to watch.

Senate Democrats, Republicans reach deal to reopen government
www.foxnews.com

... There are now enough Senate Democrats willing to back a revamped plan to reopen the government.

A source familiar with the newly-unveiled plan told Fox News Digital that there are enough Senate Democrats ready to join Republicans for a key vote Sunday night as Congress readies to reopen the government.

The latest development comes after an updated continuing resolution was revealed that would reopen the government until Jan. 30, 2026, reverse firings of furloughed workers carried out by the Trump administration and ensure that furloughed workers get back pay.

Senate Appropriations Chair Susan Collins, R-Maine, led the bipartisan deal, but a trio of Democratic caucus members, Sens. Angus King, I-Maine, Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., and Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., proved crucial in striking a way forward.

Lawmakers are expected to take the first of a trio of votes on reopening the government later Sunday night. But it will require action from the House before the closure is officially ended.

Earlier in the day, Senate Republicans unveiled another crucial piece of the puzzle in their bid to reopen the government and plan to plow ahead with a vote on Sunday.

While both sides still appear at an impasse on extending expiring Obamacare subsidies, appropriators moved ahead with a package of spending bills that Republicans hope will jumpstart the government funding process, and lead to an end to the 40-day government shutdown.

The Senate Appropriations Committee released the three-bill spending package, known as a minibus, Sunday afternoon. Lawmakers are still waiting on text for an updated continuing resolution (CR), that, if passed, is expected to reopen the government until late January.

It includes legislation that would fund military construction and the VA, the legislative branch and agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. ...

We don't really know yet whether the Dems agreed among themselves who would vote for this and who wouldn't depending on their constituency at home, but Bernie and some others aren't likely to be happy about it.

They got a vote on ACA in future they can't win because it requires 60 to pass, and they appear to have gotten Gov funding and rehiring for Gov workers, and apparently some guarantee on SNAP money.

We'll have to see the details and who votes how.

(Glad you seem to be doing well, Laura.)

The vote will likely go against the Dems unless some of the Repubs up for re-election join in. If it goes that way, there will be a lot of voters against the Repubs. They will seal being the losing party should it fail to pass.

Yeah, that's why I asked about the fate of this agreement when it reaches the House, and how Spkr Johnson might greet it.

Will he bring the House back from its multi-week vacation, and be forced to seat a new Rep? So far Spkr Johnson has been denying about 800,000 good citizens of Arizona any manner of representation in the House.

Why has he done that?

If Spkr Johnson provides that representation by seating a duly elected Rep, then the whole Epstein files thing may also come to the fore.

This "agreement" has to then be approved by the House.

And where's the House?

So, okay, the House comes back into session.

Magically, there's now enough votes to demand the release of the Epstein files.

Democrats did exceedingly well last week. And the conditions that led to this year's Democratic victories (affordability), and the Trump's inability to think beyond the next headline (and/or keep his mouth shut), will still be present a year from now.

Please let it play out. There's nothing positive we can do right now.

And bashing Schumer (who definitely NEEDS to go) or Senate Democrats, at this time, is counterproductive.

But you guys did do it first.

The nuclear option was invoked on November 21, 2013, when a Democratic majority led by Harry Reid used the procedure to reduce the cloture threshold for nominations, other than nominations to the Supreme Court, to a simple majority.[3] On April 6, 2017, the nuclear option was used again, this time by a Republican majority led by Mitch McConnell, to extend that precedent to Supreme Court nominations, in order to enable cloture to be invoked on the nomination of Neil Gorsuch by a simple majority.

Not any more.

Also.. If the ACA didn't help anyone people would have already stopped paying the premiums long ago and it would have already collapsed.

I am as surprised as Republicans that it did not collapse as they intended when they eliminated the mandate that everyone have insurance or pay a tax penalty.

A mandate that was their idea and that republicans originally had in their Massachusetts plan.

Manchin and Synema. They were both opposed. They are both gone now. No reason for the GOP to nuke the filibuster. They don't have anything big in the hopper.

With a 50-50 tie in the Senate Dems we're looking to:

A. Grant statehood to DC and Puerto Rico giving them 4 more Senators.
B. Pack the Supreme Court.
C. Federalize elections to give their party distinct advantages.

It was such a brazen attempt at a massive power grab. With Manchin and Synema gone probably the only obstacle for them is Fetterman. So, all they need is 51 Senators, the slimmest of majorities in the House and the WH.

On a Read Meat for Yellow Dogs thread with a 131 comments on a controversial subject rationality is a rare commodity. So, I'll try an interjection.

By any reasonable standard, to put it simply, the Democratic tactics would have to be judged a total failure: They got nothing in exchange for the pain they inflicted. They went to war, with federal workers and recipients of government services bearing the risk of the battle, unprepared to do what it would take to win. They lacked the moral seriousness not to play at all if they weren't going to have the fortitude to see the matter through.

I do not doubt that caving now might well be the optimal political move.

And this is one reason"one of many"why I am not a politician.

Because if caving is the right thing to do now, it was the right thing to do 41 days ago and Democratic senators should have been willing to stand up and look their constituents in the eye and say, "I don't think we will get anything in a shutdown that exceeds in value the pain we will inflict." Some did this, and that actually took courage.

But if caving was not the right thing to do then, it is no more so the right thing to do now. Because nothing has changed except that reasonably anticipatable pain is now realized pain. It took exactly no imagination to fathom that this would happen.

Nothing else is really different.

This reeks of "Damned if they do, damned if they don't."

#133 | Posted by sentinel at 2025-11-11 08:32 AM | Reply

If democrats had acted responsibly early on and avoided the shutdown they would not have been able to use it in the recent election. And that's why they did it, to use as a campaign slogan.

Donner,

"So in your "studies" have you learned what the Republicans plan is to solve ANY of those "problems" (most of which created by Republicans)?"

ACA is on life support. I don't know their solutions but here's what I believe.

I've determined the only choice to a long term solution for health care is cost control measures.

Essentially, analyze cost drivers and make them become part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

Lobbiests will likely swarm in on DC but Congress needs to stand their ground.

Passing the buck to future politicians has been the standard MO far too long.

Trump appears to want a lasting legacy and may very well have the skills to negotiate and bargain to find the right balance.

Health insurance is no longer a luxury that you buy if you can afford it.

It's a necessity.

One thing that came of this mess is that Republicans admitted that the DO NOT HAVE A PLAN to replace the ACA, and never have.

Much like the nearly half a million children that Trump and they have murdered because they had no Plan to give other nations and orgs time to replace they US Aid of food and medicine that they also cut off.

To be clear, I think 8 Senate Dems caved on empty promises. But time will tell.

This vote DOES put Mike Johnson in a bit of a pickle. To reopen the government Johnson will have to call the house back into session to vote for something that ISN'T the Republican's so called "clean CR", and everything else that reopening the House implies... Like swearing in the Representative elect from AZ..

According to this linked article, it appears that Johnson intends to shut the House back down almost immediately after the vote. What do you think he's trying to avoid?

FTA:--"The speaker also vowed that, before the House votes, he will swear in Democratic Rep.-elect Adelita Grijalva, who won her special election Sept. 23. The House has been out of session since Sept. 19 in an unusually long and unscheduled recess.

Following her swearing-in, the House will then vote on a rule for the Senate deal, followed by final passage, and then the House will leave town again, Johnson told members on the call."--

In Iraq, these eight would be called the "Fedayeen Democrats," although Senator Angus King (I-VT) is an Independent. He sounded terrible in his TV interview explaining why he caved in to the Republicans.

Note that AIPAC-backed Congressman Hakeem Jeffries defended AIPAC-backed Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY).

I can't speak for other people, but I'll give you my take on mandates.

Mandates push more money into the system...but...continually escalating costs (cost drivers) pull it right back out into the pockets of insurance companies, pharmaceuticals, hospitals and many more.

We need to know exactly, "where is the money going?". Then talk about, "where is it coming from?"

Before long, we're right back where we started and wondering why ACA needs another cash infusion.

Without serious cost controls, the cycle never ends.

Sustainability depends on fixing the cost drivers, not just feeding them more cash.

" Mandates push more money into the system...but...continually escalating costs (cost drivers) pull it right back out into the pockets of insurance companies, pharmaceuticals, hospitals and many more."

Not true at all. It's like you don't understand the underlying math.

A mandate adds more money from younger and healthier subscribers. Add that to the 80% rule (if reinstated), and pressure on rates is downward, not upward.

It's what UHC countries do, through their tax systems rather than individual purchases. They also cut A LOT of middlemen costs out.

But UHC countries spend a lower percentage of their GDP, for a larger percentage of populace covered, with better measurable results.

The US could learn a thing or two.

"Seriously?"

They reset the fiscal sights under Dubya and Cheney.

They wrote codes which were giveaways to the wealthiest.

Then Trump wrote codes which borrowed extra trillions for new tax giveaways, and now trillions more for MORE tax giveaways, so much so, they've got to slash Medicaid, and eventually, Medicare and Social Security DUE TO SEQUESTRATION RULES.

Meanwhile, Trump is giving more to Argentina this year than all the slashed TrumpCare xsubsidies would cost.

Republicans has been obstructing and undermining Obamacare since 2010.

Republicans have voted 70 times to repeal but NOT replace it.

Not one vote to fix anything.

"The Republicans are the party that says government doesn't work and then they get elected and prove it."

Donner,

"Republicans has been obstructing and undermining Obamacare since 2010."

Considering it passed without one single Republican vote, I'm not surprised.

Perhaps they saw something wrong with it dems didn't.

-Perhaps they saw something wrong with it dems didn't.

If that had any chance of being true, you wouldn't have to speculate with "perhaps".

We would know what the GOP saw wrong with it and also we would have seen their attempts to revise it accordingly.

It's been a wedge issue for the GOP. Plain and simple. They are exploiting what they can't fix (or unwilling to fix), which is our healthcare system.

I was critical of specific items included in ACA. My criticism has never been an endorsement of some magical non-existent GOP plan. It's just criticism.

Well, the Republicans chose to make costs higher when they killed the mandate.

Do we agree?

Or perhaps you are just a clueless moron.

They all voted against it obviously because if it was successful in making healthcare affordable for Americans then Republicans would not win another election for 20 years.

That's because a black man with a Muslim sounding middle name got it passed. They couldn't allow the first black POTUS to have a win and s legacy. That's totally why they didn't.

@#155 ... To be clear, I think 8 Senate Dems caved on empty promises. But time will tell. ...

Did the Dems actually cave?

Yeah, the big issue of ACA was not supported by eight Dems.

But, taking a step back ...

What the Senate agreed to ...

What Shutdown Deal Means for SNAP Benefits
www.newsweek.com

... What To Know

The proposed spending plan funds the federal government through to January, but provides full-year funding for the Department of Agriculture, the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as congressional operations through the current fiscal year ending September 30, 2026.

This means SNAP benefits would be fully appropriated, averting the risk of another food assistance cut off after January 30 if no appropriations bill is passed to fund the government beyond then.

The agreement to end the shutdown also ensures that federal employees furloughed during the lapse are rehired and receive back pay, and requires agencies to notify Congress in writing about the withdrawal of layoff notices and provide details on the back pay owed.

As part of the agreement to move the legislation forward, Senate Republicans pledged a future vote on extending Affordable Care Act (ACA) -- a major sticking point for Democrats -- health insurance tax credits, which are set to expire at year's end. Republicans have signaled they will oppose the extension, potentially causing premiums to rise sharply for the millions of Americans who depend on ACA coverage. ...

@#178 ... Did the Dems actually cave? ...

The reasons I asked that question are, for one, Spkr Johnson indcating that he would not call the House back in session unless the Senate approves the bill the House Republicans passed.

Speaker Johnson keeps House lawmakers away, canceling another week's session as shutdown drags (October 10, 2025)
federalnewsnetwork.com

... Mike Johnson is the speaker of a House that is no longer in session.

The Republican leader sent lawmakers home three weeks ago after the House approved a bill to fund the federal government. They haven't been back in working session since.

And on Friday, his leadership team announced they won't be returning next week either.

In the intervening time, the government has shut down. President Donald Trump began a mass firing of federal workers.

And a Democrat, Adelita Grijalva, won a special election in Arizona but has not been sworn into office to take her seat in Congress.

"People are upset. I'm upset. I'm a very patient man, but I am angry right now," Johnson said during one of his almost daily press conferences on the empty side of the Capitol.

"I'm doing our job. We passed the bill," he said Friday, as he left the building.

"It's on the Senate. They're the ones playing games. All the questions need to be for them."...

Dan,

"Well, the Republicans chose to make costs higher when they killed the mandate."

I think there's more to this than money, we're looking at an ideological difference.

Republicans thought a mandate was government overreach.

It's the same with many other differences between liberals and conservatives.

Invasive policies and regulation vs limited government involvement in people's lives.

I would need more numbers to make a serious evaluation. The problem is I doubt detailed enough records exist. I must confess I suspect that is by design.

I've seen before accounting systems built this way. If you don't want close scrutiny, make sure records are intentionally opaque. All the various cost drivers benefit from complexity. Even the government's own data is fragmented.

Again...here we are discussing mandates when we should be discussing all the costs involved in healthcare itself.

It probably would take a dedicated office just to track and enforce pricing, which is something liberals would probably love and, conservatives will resist.

I understand the lack of confidence in Trump, if you look at past behavior of Republicans.

However, ACA is due to expire and it's an old system and needs to be updated.

Someone has to lead and take charge.

Still, I have my doubts a full cost expose will ever happen.

#180 | Posted by BillJohnson at 2025-11-11 07:05 PM | Reply

- it's an old system and needs to be updated.

Yeah! So let's do the Stable Genius thing to do and KILL IT BEFORE THERE'S A REPLACEMENT PLAN!

Republicans have had 15 years to propose an alternative and they've produced diddily squat.

It's sort of like when Trump killed nearly half a million children this year because he shot first and never did worry about who got killed.

You own that.

They will have something. I just hope it's not ACA 2.0.

Just rewind the clock and write off losses annually.

OK, let's look at that.

"No Replacement plan"

What has the GOP introduced as a "Replacement Plan?"

Really, what?

Please be specific. This is health care, so please be specific.

... just like ACA....out of date and stale. ..

ACA has been working for millions (tens of millions?) of Americans.

Is it perfect?

Likely not.

But does it work?

Yes.

So, I ask once again, what is the awesome MAGA plan to replace ACA?

...

Candidate Trump

Candidate Trump on healthcare:

May 21, 2015
I'm not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid.

Sept 25, 2015
Everybody's got to be covered.

Feb 17, 2016
We're going to have great plans. They're going to be much less expensive and they're going to be much better.

Oct 25, 2016
You're going to have such great healthcare at a tiny fraction of the cost, and it is going to be so easy.

Nov 13, 2016
It will be better healthcare, much better for less money. Not a bad combination.

"I'm not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican and I'm not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid."
-- Trump to the Daily Signal in May 2015

"We will immediately repeal and replace ObamaCare - and nobody can do that like me. We will save $'s and have much better healthcare!"
-- Trump tweet in February 2016

Pres-elect Trump on healthcare:

"We're going to have insurance for everybody ... There was a philosophy in some circles that if you can't pay for it, you don't get it. That's not going to happen with us."
-- Pres-elect Trump to the Washington Post in January 2017

Pres Trump on healthcare:

"Our healthcare plan will lower premiums & deductibles -- and be great healthcare!"
-- Trump tweet in May 2017

...

So, Pres Trump has had over eight years to come up with his great health plan to replace ObamaCare.

What has he proposed?
