Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Wednesday, July 29, 2026

Dr. Anthony Fauci on Wednesday during a Senate hearing on COVID-19 invoked his constitutional right not to answer questions. "On the advice of counsel, I respectfully decline to answer, based upon my rights under the Fifth Amendment of the constitution," Fauci repeatedly said to questions posed by Senate Homeland Security Committee Chairman Sen. Rand Paul. Paul, a doctor and Kentucky Republican, continued undeterred, continuing to ask Fauci such questions about so-called gain-of-function research, which helps scientists learn about the direction of a pathogen but also brings a high risk of it becoming widespread.

Under the current administration, Fauci has a reason to do so.

Fauci's attorneys probably have more sense than Dr. Sen. Rand Paul's lawyers. Let's not forget Sen. Paul's own history with scientific credibility.

What's happening today is just another post hoc attempt to prove that Donald Trump was less than an eff up with COVID.

It's also an attempt to feed red meat to that already dying religion, MAGA.

Fauci came out looking better than Trump after COVID. There's no way in hell Trump can let that stand.

Since the thread link is a nothingburger joke, here's an actual article on topic:

"Paul has an "unhinged obsession with me," and his motive for the hearing is to "get me to say something " anything " that could vindicate his repeated public pledges that I end up, in his words, quote, behind bars, unquote," Fauci said.

"Although it pains me to do so ... under the advice of my attorneys, I will invoke my right under the Fifth Amendment of the Constitution to refrain from answering your questions," Fauci said.

"Paul also ordered Fauci's lawyer removed from the committee room for trying to speak.
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) said the hearing is part of a "campaign against science" that "has made this country less safe."

"If there are valid scientific questions about the origins of this pandemic ... they should certainly be addressed, but not in a show trial, not as part of a continuing vendetta against a single individual," Blumenthal said."

"This funding sparked a fierce political and legal battle over whether the experiments technically qualified as "gain-of-function".

Senator Rand Paul has aggressively campaigned against former NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci, accusing him of funding dangerous "supervirus" engineering and trying to cover up a lab leak.

Dr. Fauci has consistently maintained that the NIH-funded research did not meet the strict regulatory definition of dangerous GoF enhancement, making a pandemic strain molecularly impossible to emerge from those specific trials."

Fauci aka "Mr. Science". The nation's "leading expert" in COVID contracted COVID 3 times after being vaccinated and boosted 6 times. He had a pulmonary embolism 6 months after his second Moderna shot. This was, of course, not publicized.

Speaking of lame conspiracy theorists...

"There is no public or medical record showing that Dr. Anthony Fauci suffered a pulmonary embolism, and claims stating otherwise are unsubstantiated rumors.

The unverified claim regarding a pulmonary embolism appears to misinterpret or falsely connect unrelated historical news coverage, such as the federal pause on the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in April 2021 due to extremely rare clotting events

.No credible or official documentation supports the assertion that Dr. Fauci experienced this specific medical event." per CBS news

The nation's "leading expert" in COVID contracted COVID 3 times after being vaccinated and boosted 6 times.

Did he get hospitalized? Did he die on a ventilator?

His job obviously brought him into contact with the disease multiple times and yet the vaccine appears to have worked as advertised for him. It kept him out of the hospital and off a ventilator.

Republicans can lie with impunity while IN Congress but if Dr Fauci had misspoke or gotten a date or time or minor fact wrong when speaking to Congress he would have been prosecuted to the fullest extent of the Law for it.

Isn't that interesting?

Fauci was a major source of the misinformation, but Democrats and their allies helped spread and enforce it.

Social media was pressured to suppress information that did not fit the Democratic narrative. This very site fell directly in line.

Businesses were shuttered unnecessarily. Children were kept out of school far longer than necessary. People who questioned any of it were mocked, censored or accused of endangering others.

The list goes on.

The question is why did Democrats embrace and spread so much misinformation?

Some were undoubtedly frightened and simply believed what they were told. But I believe there may also have been a deeper motive perhaps not always fully conscious.

The shutdowns weakened the economy, increased dependence on government checks and expanded demand for government programs. That outcome fit perfectly with the political philosophy of those who believe government should play a much larger role in people's lives.

Why were so many Democrats determined to keep everything shut down for so long, even as the damage became increasingly obvious?

I am not claiming that every Democrat participated in some coordinated conspiracy. I am asking whether Democratic leaders recognized that the crisis created an opportunity to expand government dependence and then exploited that opportunity, despite the hardship it caused.

Conspiracy theories are not automatically true, but neither are they automatically false.

Read what I am actually saying, and not what you want to believe I am saying.

Overall, the difference in people getting COVID was minimal.

"Fauci's lack of candor to Congress is unbelievable," Uthmeier puled on X. "My office is launching an investigation into Dr. Fauci. It's past time we get the truth of what happened during COVID."

"Within months of Gov. Ron DeSatan handpicking him as Florida's new attorney general last winter, James Uthmeier landed a lucrative side gig: a $100,000-a-year teaching assignment at University of Florida's law school for just two hours of instruction per week."

Without a link to these long term credible studies, nobody believes you.

There's also an important difference between the claim that wearing a mask didn't make much of a difference in the person wearing the mask getting COVID, vs the person wearing the mask spreading COVID.

But I suppose the idea of "wearing a mask in case you might be infected and don't want to infect others" is something you never thought about and still won't. Because that would demonstrate compassion for rank strangers, and you don't have that.

What was Trump ignorant about stirring up panic that killed people?

#153 | POSTED BY BILLJOHNSON

Was there a panic in 2020? I saw hysteria, no panic. A straightforward health emergency was turned into a test of political and cultural loyalty by a bunch of people who proved to have the worldview of hillbillies.

Now, I come from a long line of hillbillies, so I know something about them. My grandmother told me that the astronauts would be sorry when the Moon turned to blood.

Other advanced nations held their COVID dead to a few tens of thousands, That should have been the USA. Yeah, we should blame Trump. His response to pandemic was to treat it as a personal public image problem; and to do what he could to make sure that it was the Blue state that suffered from it.

This is why people say you are in a cult, BILL. We all lived through this, but what do you remember? Only the Trump/MAGA mythology, which is a collection of easily checked and silly lies.

One meaning, to exert a determining or guiding influence in or over

Fauci strongly influenced actions of the government, that is how he governed.

"Yes the US allows bureaucrats to govern, they don't even need to be "experts"."

Civil servants enforce regulations, policy and rules. They do not "govern".

Just because you can't afford insurance or permits etc does not mean they are in charge of you.

If you don't like the rules there is a democratic process available to change them. Unlike your homeland.

You need to look up the definition of"governed".

One meaning, to exert a determining or guiding influence in or over

Less is more. The more you type the dumber you sound chinaman.

Zed,

"What of the COVID threat did MAGA mishandle?"

No....don't change my question and act like you're answering my question.

My question to Doc was,

"What part of the COVID hysteria are you attributing to Trump that killed so many people?" I am asking for specifics.

I am responding to Doc's comment of,

"Donald Trump, whose ignorance and stupidity, panic and hysteria helped kill nobody knows how many people who made the fatal mistake of listening to his moronic babbling."

Again...I am not looking at your question. I want to know what ignorance and stupidity created panic and hysteria which ultimately killed "nobody knows how many", per Doc.

Just a few specifics.

You don't remember? Is your Fake Plastic Brain broke?

I'll give you some examples that came quickly to mind.

He promoted Unverified Treatments on National TV: In April 2020, Trump publicly mused during a White House press briefing about injecting household disinfectants like bleach and using internal ultraviolet light as potential cures for the virus. These comments were swiftly condemned by the medical community, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and disinfectant manufacturers, who had to issue urgent warnings against ingestion. Poison control centers reported spikes in calls following the remarks.

Remember. This was the POTUS speaking to Americans during pandemic when we all just wanted answers as to what our government was as doing to help us.

He downplayed the Virus and Efficacy of Masks: Throughout the early stages of the pandemic, Trump publicly downplayed the severity and transmissibility of COVID-19"despite acknowledging its deadliness in private interviews"which critics argue discouraged the public from taking preventative measures. His administration frequently cast doubt on scientific consensus regarding mask-wearing and social distancing, leading to a heavy politicization of public health guidelines.

#153 | POSTED BY BILLJOHNSON

My first reaction to the question was, you're kidding, of course.

But let's assume you aren't. So here's a specific: Trump stirred up and spread endless confusion during the epidemic with his idiotic televised performances from the WH. Herky-jerky, ignoramic stuff - horse paste, for chrissakes, light bulbs somewhere, somehow, maybe up the ass? Of course, when Trump contracted Covid, boy, did he get some care far out of the reach of those who were unfortunate enough to make the mistake of listening to him push medicine show "remedies."

As POTUS, Trump had an obligation to spread the word about Covid, and not just any words.

Donner,

Look up the Cochrane review on masks.

Its conclusion was not that masks can never work. It found that, in randomized studies, encouraging people to wear masks produced little or no clearly detectable reduction in COVID or other respiratory infections.

The researchers compared medical masks, N95 respirators and no mask groups. When they looked at who actually became infected, the overall benefit was minimal and statistically uncertain.

That is quite different from the confident claim that widespread masking and mask mandates had been proven to substantially reduce transmission.

The debate over masks certainly came close to creating the very "panic and hysteria" Doc talked about. People were shamed, excluded and treated as dangerous for questioning claims that were far less certain than officials admitted.

In hindsight, much of it looks like theater and virtue signaling masquerading as settled science.

Regarding the shutdowns:

Trump initially supported the "15 Days to Slow the Spread" guidelines. Before those 15 days had ended, he was already warning about the economic damage and saying he hoped businesses could begin reopening by Easter.

He later abandoned the Easter target and extended the federal distancing guidelines through April 30.

But the federal government never imposed a single nationwide business shutdown. The actual orders closing businesses, schools and public spaces and the decisions about how long to keep them closed were generally made by governors under their own state authority.

The Trump administration issued guidance, but governors were not under federal orders requiring them to continue the shutdowns and mandates.

It was largely the governors who determined how severely and how long their individual states remained shut down.

This would be another major element of Doc's "panic and hysteria,".

The prolonged state shutdowns cannot fairly be laid primarily at Trump's feet.

Dr. Fauci -- like US Army General Douglas MacArthur ("American Caesar") -- gained a half-century experience and expertise in their respective fields and used them for the benefit of the American people and the USG.

Dr Fauci -- who therefore avoided conscription for service during the height of the Vietnam War in 1968 -- now faces more peril and trauma from his fellow Americans than from what the NVA or the Viet Cong might have inflicted upon him in SE Asia.

Dan,

I said "minimal," not "no benefit."

The bottom line is that the widespread panic and hysteria were not justified. The public was repeatedly told that masks had been scientifically proven to substantially reduce a person's chances of becoming infected.

The Cochrane review showed that the randomized evidence was nowhere near that conclusive. The measured benefit was minimal and statistically uncertain.

That does not prove masks could never provide any benefit.

It does show that the certainty with which the claim was presented to the public was not supported by the evidence.

That became misinformation and ultimately turned masks into a political wedge.

Its conclusion was not that masks can never work.

Yeah. That's why all the doctors and nurses all use them. They dont work.

Idiots are going to be idiots I guess.

The reasons masks did not work well is Americans were not being taught and prepared for such an event and are not being taught how to protect themselves from deadly viruses while in our schools. I remember being schooled on the dangers of a nuclear attack and all the civil defense drills In elementary school. They were to try and prepare us in case of attack. So we wouldn't be so taken by surprise and not know what to do ( even if it was ineffective training at least we tried).

I was never trained in school how to protect myself or my family from a pandemic. I was trained in the military on biological and chemical warfare defenses and techniques.

It's like we were pretending it could never happen here (again as we went thru this in 1917 also).

We were completely unprepared as a nation to deal it. We don't even manufacture masked and necessary medical equipment here in America. And we are still completely unprepared. Because Trumpy's forever war and memorials to himself are much more important.

I do not think we could survive a real deadly pandemic. This country will surely eat itself and collapse in chaos if/when we are attacked by an even more deadly strain.

We were not prepared and we are still not prepared.

Good luck America. You will need it.

AI Overview

Yes, scientific evidence demonstrates that masks were worth it during the COVID-19 pandemic because they significantly reduced viral transmission and saved lives.

While their real-world impact depended heavily on the type of mask used and how consistently they were worn, large-scale studies confirm they provided substantial public health benefits

Real-World Protection: A massive, gold-standard randomized controlled trial involving 350,000 people in Bangladesh proved that community mask-wearing significantly cut symptomatic COVID-19 cases, particularly among vulnerable older adults.

Life-Saving Impact: Retrospective genomic tracking, such as a study conducted by UC San Diego Health, confirmed that masking combined with adequate ventilation directly prevented hospital transmission and saved lives.

Broad Scientific Consensus: A rapid systematic review published by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) analyzed dozens of papers and found that 83% of community studies confirmed masks successfully reduced infection rates.

Corky,

Regarding your #189 link.

I looked at the study.

It was a legitimate, large randomized trial in Bangladesh, but its findings were far more modest than Yale's promotional headline suggests.

The mask promotion program nearly tripled proper mask usage from about 13% to 42%, yet symptomatic, antibody-confirmed infection declined from 0.76% to 0.68%.

That is an absolute difference of only 0.08 percent or roughly eight fewer cases per 10,000 people.

Most importantly, the Cochrane review included this Bangladesh trial and still concluded that the overall randomized evidence showed little or no clearly detectable community benefit.

So yes, the Yale study is evidence of a modest possible benefit.

It is not the sweeping scientific proof of mask mandates that you are presenting it as, and it does not contradict my use of the word "minimal."

Yes, that works out to a 10.5% reduction.

But in actual numbers, the rate fell by only 0.08 percent from 0.76% to 0.68% or roughly eight fewer confirmed cases per 10,000 people.

You can argue that eight fewer cases per 10,000 was important during a pandemic. That is a legitimate argument.

But it remains a modest benefit, and this study certainly does not justify the massive fear and hysteria that were promoted or the claim that mask mandates had been conclusively proven to provide substantial protection.

A half truth is as bad or even worse than a lie.

Only two of the six studies compared use of face masks with no use of masks: one from Denmark, the DANMASK-19 RCT,4 and one from Bangladesh.5 But even with these limited, additional data, the appearance of disagreement between the Cochrane review results and public health guidance disappears if infectious disease models are applied, because the models calibrate quite well to the new Cochrane data and, when extrapolated, show that masks can reduce respiratory infections significantly.

My point was based on the review's overall findings and not on that one study alone.

Across the comparisons of different masks and no mask groups, the overall reduction in infection was minimal and statistically uncertain.

Certainly not enough to justify the turmoil Democrats and their allies helped create.

Re 230

Yes. Bad things happen during global pandemics. Mistakes will happen and people will suffer and die because of it. We were not prepared and we are still not prepared.

That's why it was so critical for Trumpy to protect America from the worst of it and nip it in the bud while he had a chance.

But he blew it. Stinky blew it then and he has blown it (successfully divided America over it) for the future as well should we be faced with a an even more deadly pandemic again ( as I suspect we will).

Due to Trumpy's negligence and criminal incompetence he was unable or unwilling to stop it or even support Biden's efforts to combat it and contain it after Trumpy let it rampage thru the population and lost an election because of that.

Because he is a big fat stinky baby and his "feeling" was hurt because he lost.

All this arguing about masks, ivermectin, bleach, etc......I remember the delay in shutdowns.

Isn't that the biggest factor in preventable deaths? That we waited too long to shut it down?

the common number I've seen 36,000 deaths could have been prevented if we shut down a week earlier.

Not sure how they came up with that but whatever......

36K deaths. Assuming your number is correct.

The shutdown devastated the livelihoods and well-being of millions of lives. They may not have died but still we're talking about millions and millions of families hurt and many will not bounce back, due to shutting down the economy.

Which course ultimately caused the greater overall harm to society?

Let's that is meaningless because it is.

Sure Beverly.

Everyone I know is upset about the unnecessary deaths. None of us run around hysterically about it.

But when it comes up in conversation we will happily tell you what we think.

The real question is.. why aren't you and your friends NOT upset about a million Americans dying and hundreds of thousands dying unnecessarily?

"But the country has moved on."

We have moved on to the next Trumpy induced crisis. And the next and the next ad nauseam.

But it is still simmering beneath the surface just waiting to resurface as this hearing and this thread clearly showed.

Here is the real reason Americans don't know how to react to so many deaths.

Psychologists note that when the death toll reaches massive, abstract numbers (like 1 million+), the human brain struggles to process the scale of the loss. This can lead to "compassion fatigue," where society naturally becomes less reactive to the ongoing daily death counts.

We were fatigued before it even ended. We are even more fatigued of it now.
