The Democratic Party is about 198 years old (founded in 1828), and the Republican Party is about 172 years old (founded in 1854).

The creation of SS and Medicare is why the debt is so large, entitlements are 2/3rd of the US budget.

Social Security and Medicare have reserves. Those reserves haven't been depleted yet. They only add to the US national debt because the reserves were given to other US programs as IOUs.

But Republicans have spent like crazy WHILE cutting taxes to the rich like crazy for the last 45 years. So instead of paying for programs with regular taxes, they've been using Social Security and Medicare funds which they now can't pay back.
