Stephen Collinson: It's one of the most shocking national security indiscretions in years.
White House acknowledges several top Trump officials plotted Yemen strikes in unclassified group chat that included Atlantic editor.
The group chat appeared to involve key national security figures, including Vice President JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, according to the Atlantic.[image or embed]

What you have to understand about Pete Hegseth copying and pasting war plans into Signal is that it almost certainly means he's got classified documents on his personal UNSECURE devices. Signal isn't on a secure device ... are our war plans on his personal devices? @jeffreygoldberg.bsky.social

Buttigieg: I know this in my experience, both in the cabinet and as an intelligence officer, you would have to go out of your way to take classified information and move it into an unclassified system[image or embed]

Gotta love the New York Times' treatment of this story: static01.nyt.com
Who needs fascist Fox News when there's the "liberal media"?
Boaz probably means, prosecute the reporter, let the Drunk SecDef and his unqualified minions skate.
So Much Winning!
A Pentagon-wide email recently went out warning about Signal's vulnerability
A Pentagon-wide advisory went out one week ago warning against using the messaging app Signal, even for unclassified information.
"A vulnerability has been identified in the Signal messenger application," begins the department-wide email, dated March 18, obtained by NPR.
The memo continues, "Russian professional hacking groups are employing the 'linked devices' features to spy on encrypted conversations." It notes that Google has identified Russian hacking groups who are "targeting Signal Messenger to spy on persons of interest."

"There is a dispute over whether the term war plans' is being exaggerated"
Only by people who want to deny that war plans were shared.

The world found out shortly before 2 p.m. eastern time on March 15 that the United States was bombing Houthi targets across Yemen.
I, however, knew two hours before the first bombs exploded that the attack might be coming. The reason I knew this is that Pete Hegseth, the secretary of defense, had texted me the war plan at 11:44 a.m. The plan included precise information about weapons packages, targets, and timing.
This case shows three things:
They hate Europe.
They think about geopolitics like a corporation. If we do this, and it's good for you, then you should pay.
They are incompetent regarding security.
Another birthday gift for Putin.

The messages on our top notch secure comms are preserved as official records. The Signal messages were slated for deletion after a week.
Makes you wonder how Tulsi found the Trans/LGBT Signal messages and fired them huh.
Even Biden's e Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) approved of its as a best practice?

The story is, of course, much worse if Goldberg is telling the truth (either he or Hegseth is lying; there's no middle ground). But even if that part of the story isn't true, there is hardly a more sensitive fact that we need to keep secret than that senior American policymakers are discussing a surprise military strike. You carefully guard that discussion, whether or not it includes coordinates, targets, methods, or strike times. This leaves me asking once again the Casey Stengel refrain: Can't anybody here play this game?

Goldberg is the one telling the truth. To wit:
Here Are the Attack Plans That Trump's Advisers Shared on Signal
The administration has downplayed the importance of the text messages inadvertently sent to The Atlantic's editor in chief.
By Jeffrey Goldberg and Shane Harris
The statements by Hegseth, Gabbard, Ratcliffe, and Trumpcombined with the assertions made by numerous administration officials that we are lying about the content of the Signal texts"have led us to believe that people should see the texts in order to reach their own conclusions. There is a clear public interest in disclosing the sort of information that Trump advisers included in nonsecure communications channels, especially because senior administration figures are attempting to downplay the significance of the messages that were shared.
Experts have repeatedly told us that use of a Signal chat for such sensitive discussions poses a threat to national security. As a case in point, Goldberg received information on the attacks two hours before the scheduled start of the bombing of Houthi positions. If this information"particularly the exact times American aircraft were taking off for Yemen had fallen into the wrong hands in that crucial two-hour period, American pilots and other American personnel could have been exposed to even greater danger than they ordinarily would face. The Trump administration is arguing that the military information contained in these texts was not classified"as it typically would be although the president has not explained how he reached this conclusion.
