Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, October 24, 2025

After 123 years, the East Wing of the White House is no more. With no construction permits and no approved plans, President Donald Trump took less than two days to destroy an iconic image that was the first stop for anyone who had gone for an official tour of the People's House. Trump plans to build a 90,000-square-foot, $300 million ballroom.

It should be noted that the Trump Administration has not denied, when asked directly, if Donald has the power to destroy the Jefferson Memorial.

Donald Trump is jealous of past presidents and the respect shown to them.

When people with Donald's mental illness get jealous (and that's easy for them to do), they get dangerous.

So, yes. The Jefferson Memorial is at some risk.

And if Donald began demolition, every one of us here knows exactly what he would say"

"I HAVE AN ABSOLUTE RIGHT".

This breaks my heart

Just a fact-based reminder

Trump is a temporary resident of the White House. He does not own it, nor does have even have control over it.

That building belongs to us, the US citizens.

Any significant change should ONLY come at the approval of the people's representatives-Congress.

And for those arguing that the people aren't paying for it, that is decidedly NOT a good thing. It is, in fact, decidedly, a bad thing.

That means ONLY that unknown actors are paying for access to the president, i.e. bribing him. That is OUR building, WE should be deciding it's construction and WE should be paying for it.

The "wrong" of this is so monumental as to beggar words.

This action has hit me harder in ways that other even worse things haven't, even the murdering he is doing.

Maybe it is my love of history, maybe it is my particular reverence for our heritage. Maybe it was I was prepared for the assaults on our liberties, I was prepared for murder, I was prepared for fascism. I was not prepared for the destruction of one of our nation's primary symbols.

I FEEL like I felt during the assault on the Capitol, like I am being violated.

This man has zero respect for our country; it is beyond despairing.

Defenders seem to keep wanting to point to Truman's overhaul of the White House, but that's because it was structurally troubled. It was a necessity.

No one else has done, to the degree, that Trump is doing now...and that's why it's getting this attention.

I suspect two things will eventually become public knowledge (after some effort to conceal them):

1. The estimate cost will greatly increase. It has already increased to $300 M. My guesstimate is it'll be $500 M.

2. The list of donors will shrink and/or they'll donate less than they have pledged.

At a time that the government is shut down and the wealthy are being given large tax breaks, this construction can best be described as a pathetic, shameful project.

No, regulations are not preventing rebuilding after the Palisades fire; in fact, the government has issued executive orders to expedite the process by suspending certain regulations like some local permitting laws and environmental reviews. However, rebuilding still requires obtaining permits and following updated fire safety codes, and some residents have reported delays due to other issues like conflicting inspector opinions

Are you a structural engineer? Do you think you are a geotechnical or structural engineer? Are you capable of determining that without professional guidance and help?

I have no idea wtf you are talking about but I am sure there are very specific and rare circumstances where such an extreme foundation might be necessary to ensure structural safety. A geotechnical and structural engineer would need to make this determination.

That when politicians say "we can rebuild" (Newsom), "we can stream line a process" (Bass,Mamdani) they are lying.

Trump in this counter example just shows you how messed up anti-growth advocates were, and the laws/regulations they created. America can build things, but the legal process is 1/3 of the costs, and 300% of the time, typically driving new home costs, new transit costs so high they don't get built.

AI Overview
The White House Rose Garden has been significantly redesigned multiple times, with key renovations in 1913, 1961 (under John F. Kennedy), and 2020 (under Melania Trump). Another major, controversial overhaul was completed in 2025 under Donald Trump, which replaced the lawn with a concrete patio.
1913: First Lady Ellen Wilson had the space transformed from a colonial garden into a formal rose garden with hedges and roses.
1961-1962: President John F. Kennedy initiated a major renovation with designer Rachel Lambert Mellon to create a more open space suitable for larger gatherings, with a large central grass panel.
2020: First Lady Melania Trump's redesign involved removing crabapple trees, adding a limestone walkway, and updating flower beds. This was considered the most significant change since the 1960s.
2025: Donald Trump's administration completed another renovation, removing the lawn entirely to install a large concrete patio, which drew criticism

MSGT serious question can you read at a 5th grade level?

First

The 2010 White House renovation was a four-year, multi-million dollar infrastructure project to replace outdated and failing systems, primarily in the East and West Wings. The project, which was named the "White House Big Dig" by the press, involved excavating underground to upgrade electrical wiring, plumbing, and HVAC systems, and was funded by a congressional appropriation approved in 2008 under the George W. Bush administration.

How is that in any way comparable to what Trump is doing?

I ask without hope of getting a reply.

Second

Your observation about the Rose Garden is that Trump previously desecrated that space.

Again, the Rose Garden was the brain child of a beloved First Lady who was the wife of an assassinated president.

As such the Rose Garden holds special meaning to Americans or at least those who cherish their nation's history.

NO ONE is saying Trump and Melania cannot have an impact, even a permanent impact on the house. That is absolutely appropriate EVEN IF ------- IS A DICTATOR

We are saying that what ------- does should be respectful of the history of the White House. There are MANY ways he could have changed the White House and it's surroundings WITHOUT DESTROYING a third of it and then tripling the size of the building with a tacky pointless ballroom.

But, then again, you are too stupid to understand.

- when Republicans are in office

We bitched, rightfully, about Reagan's Trickle Down that never ever did, and GW' Excellent Adventure for Yellow Cake... but neither of them ever tried to stay in Office after they lost an Election by Fake State Ballots and a riot of their thugs inside the Capitol Bld.... guess Trump just hates official buildings, eh?

Nor were they convicted of fraud and finger-rape. Nor were they Guinness World Record Level liars and thieves.

No, Trump isn't like any other Pres we've ever had with his greed and lies and arrogance, and we've got every right to bitch now... as do a lot of people who now feel stupid for voting for him.

It's funny though when Trumpers bring up Biden or Pelosi or Obama or any other Dem Pres, who never did any of those things.

Many of you have made a good point, a fancy new ballroom makes the rest of the White House look small and shabby. When the ballroom is finished Trump should tear down the rest of the White House and construct something much more grand. Something fit for a King.

@#74 ... After many years, decades before Trump, I've noticed that and/all liber dems 'goto' is to bitch about any and all when Republicans are in office, ...

Oh, I do agree, 100%.

And back in those times you cite, the "bitching" was about differences of political views. That was the political process of America.

But Pres Trump has brought us past differences in political views, and in the realm of the Republicans apparently sanctioning overt breaking of laws and the Constitution.

So, your comment seems to be little more than an attempt at a false equivalency.

What else yer got?

#72 | POSTED BY MSG

You got nothing but lies.

Here are facts.

The project was a bipartisan Congressional bill funded in 2001.

It was a utilities project.

Obama just happened to have taken office when it ended up beginning after many years planning.

It was the 'White House Big Dig' and didn't involve any physical building changes.

#94 | Posted by ClownShack at 2025-10-25 01:25 AM | Reply

Correction:

The $376 million infrastructure project was planned and funded during the George W. Bush administration in 2008, not 2001, and the renovation itself began under the Obama administration.

@#89 ... The White House can host bigger gatherings now ...

Yeah, the prior reception area had a capacity of around 150 people.

Resulting in the use of tents when more that 150 were attending.

So, yeah, that was a problem.

I do not debate that.

What I do debate is the process that Pres Trump has used to demolish the East Wing of the White House.

If his goal was as pristine as MAGA seems to say it is, then why didn't he follow the law to get approval for his project involving the Peoples' House?

The White House is one the primary symbols of America and it's heritage.

We're talking to people who fundamentally hate America and its heritage.

Which is why they want to ignore it and replace it with a sanitized bulls*&^ version that has only ever existed in people's minds.

This entire episode is turning into a great way to identify those anti-American fake "patriots."

Do you get any of your information or news from something that's not a meme or social media misdirect?

Because if you did, you wouldn't spew constant nonsense that's meant to manipulate your thoughts like this one.

Try something, just a few times, to see how different the world actually is from the BS bubble you live in. The next five things you read on your social media feed or in a chain email from a politician, look it up first before believing it. See how much it matches actual reality.

Because if you'd done that with this you'd have found out that it was renovations/upgrades with associated funding that was passed in...2008 under GW Bush.

www.snopes.com

The renovations under Obama did take place. Both CNN and Bloomberg News reported in 2010 about a four-year, $376 million White House renovation project beginning during his presidency.

However, many social media posts omitted key context: Congress approved the funding in 2008 following a report by the administration of then-President George W. Bush, and the renovations aimed to upgrade the building's aging infrastructure, according to the news reports.

It's misleading to suggest Obama personally "spent" $370 million on White House renovations, as some posts claimed, as Congress approved the project's funding during Bush's time in office.

Will you f*&^ing turds please just admit you're easily had rubes and start looking into s*&^ before believing it?

Reagan took them off. Obama put them back.

Oh yes we can!

Is Trumpy gonna take them off again? If not why? Is he scared? Does he secretly like solar panels?

Wouldn't it look nicer with some Bigly piles of Beautiful Clean Coal up there instead the roof instead? Or perhaps several hundred barrels of that drill baby drill goo?

#104 | Posted by donnerboy at 2025-10-25 10:27 AM | Reply

Carter installed an inefficient solar water heater and it damaged the roof in the process. Bush installed both a photovoltaic system and two solar water heating systems. Obama merely increased the capacity of the existing system installed by Bush.

Oh. So you lie everyday but NOW you are into the details? Aren't you special!

The fact is that solar panels save money. They make sense. Except to Trumpy and his MAGAts.

So yes they were put back and even improved and made more efficient as you pointed out. Trumpy hates solar power. Or so he says. "It's the scam of the century!"

So why hasn't he torn them out and tossed them in the dumpsters with the East Wing?

If they are not going to tear them down will they put them on the monstrosity that Trumpy is building? A monstrosity that will require massive amounts of energy to support and which Americans will have to maintain and support and pay for long after he is gone.
