I have never seen such utter disrespect demonstrated by an American president and his pathetic moron VP in my life. Never. This was infuriating. Zelenskyy managed it - somehow. Wow. This was just terrible. Trump embarrassed himself and brought shame on the United States and Vance piled on demanding Zelenskyy kiss Trump's ring.

SO... Trump berating Zelensly in public in the Oval Office for having a 'bad attitude'... meaning he shouldn't be asking for the Security Agreement that everyone knew he was asking for.

We get to see Trump yelling about all his past with Biden and Obama and seeking Revenge.

When this all started that time Zelensky refused to blackmail Joe Biden for Trump.

When Trump says, "Trust me!" Putin won't go back on any deal... run away as fast as you can.

Trump never intended on helping Ukraine, as we all know. He orchestrated this tantrum to give him cover with the GOP to refuse further aid to Ukraine.

@#6 ... When Trump says, "Trust me!" Putin won't go back on any deal... run away as fast as you can. ...

The only deal that Pres Putin wants is control of all of Ukraine.

That apparently is why Pres Putin told Pres Trump not to provide any security guarantees to Ukraine and to block NATO membership for Ukraine ... so Pres Putin can continue his invasion at a later date.

Regarding the mineral "deal" between Pres Trump and Ukraine, Pres Putin has already offered Pres trump access to Russia minerals, in other words, Pres Trump's mineral "deal" will still be in place if (when?) Pres Putin controls all of Ukraine. So, for Pres Trump, it is a no-lose deal, meanwhile he is handing Ukraine to Pres Putin ...

A reporter for Russian state media was allowed to attend a joint briefing between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, although the Trump White House claimed this was done in error.

The correspondent, who was working for the TASS Russian news agency, was first spotted by The Independent's Andrew Feinberg, who broke news of his presence on X.

Shortly afterward, a White House official gave Feinberg a statement saying that the TASS reporter had been admitted in error.

In a way, I am glad this finally happened, and that it happened publicly. It is now clear for the whole world to see that Trump and MAGA is trying to shove Putin!s terms down stage throat of the Ukraine. Trump is doing everything he can to give Putin his total victory. In a very intelligent manner, Zelenskyy has told Trump and Vance to shove it up their ass. No matter how much Trump may want to force Zelenskyy to kiss his ring, that ain't happening. Especially not in the face of Trump's manifest attempt to extort the Ukraine.

This is a disaster for both sides. Trump will deeply regret this.

Trump called Zelensky a dictator because he has cancelled elections multiple times.

Maybe its just that Zelensky wants to stay in control because that's the only way to keep information buried about dealings with him and the Bidens.

Right now all anyone can do is spectulate about where the missing money has gone the US gave to Ukraine.

Based on today, it doesn't appear Trump is exactly interested in helping Zelensky on any terms except his own.

Grifter gangster gonna grift and gangster:

Historian calls out Trump's Ukraine 'protection racket': 'Not a lot of diplomatic thought here'

President Donald Trump is slated to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, whom he called a "dictator." They are expected to finalize an agreement giving the U.S. rights to rare minerals in Ukraine. Historian Jon Meacham told MSNBC on Friday that Trump's approach was reminiscent of the Sopranos.

"So one of the things that I think is really important here is to remember that we are now living " to shift from a historical metaphor to a cultural one--we're now living in the Sopranos, right? This is a protection racket. Basically, President Zelenskyy is being asked to come to Washington to pay for our protection," he continued.

Screw them, we have our oceans and our weapons, we shouldn't have to buy favors from anyone. The only reason we do that in the first place is because most of our pols while giving away our money use their network of shady agencies and NGOs to skim wealth for themselves.

For the benefit of Bill Johnson, the Ukraine constitution stipulates that elections may not be held if the country is under martial law. Not surprisingly the Ukraine was placed under martial law just after Russia invaded. Zelensky is not ignoring his country's constitution, he is upholding it - hardly the act of a dictator.

Trump must know this, because as you wrote, " I suspect Trump knows a lot more about Ukraine than we're being told.

The far more likely scenario is France, Germany and England send troops to Ukraine as some sort of security force. Russia attacks them. And we side with Russia and even attack France, Germany and England.

The real truth:

Ron Filipkowski
@ronfilipkowski.bsky.social

Trump and Vance needed to create an incident to provide a justification for their pre-planned abandonment of Ukraine now, then separation from NATO in the near future. That's what that was all about, and that was always the way a second Trump term was going to go.

In the story, this all works out well for the AC for 3.5 years from the day Israel and her many neighbors sign a 7 year Peace Accord. As will have many other nations elsewhere.

Then he'll attack Israel himself half way through the agreement. And then all Great Tribulation breaks lose.

Which is all seemingly highly unlikely, and there are dozens of more details that would have to happen... which is even more unlikely.

So we'll know one way or another.

What you saw was a poorly executed professional wrestling show by Hair Furor and Couchlover with Zelenskyy as an unknowing participant.

All that was made public was that a president of a nation facing existential conflict arrived as an invited guest to the White House to be ridiculed, lied to, and attacked by the traitorous performance artists currently occupying our highest seats of executive power.

Russia is the aggressor. They started this, the war doesn't end on Russian terms.

People don't seem to even understand why we offer protection to Ukraine or even care for the matter ... ... .

America told Ukraine if they gave up their nuclear weapons we would be their Allies and would always support them. We signed a document ensuring their security for Ukraine. At the time of the agreement, Ukraine had 1,734 nuclear warheads, 3rd largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in the world, and we brokered an agreement with them ... ... ..give up your nuclear weapons and we will always support you and promise you protection from enemies. It took 3 years to broker a deal of this magnitude with Ukraine but we eventually did and signed in agreement with them in 1994.

It was called The Budapest Memorandum

Hey BILLJOHNSON, your willful ignorance is profound:

The Ukrainian constitution disallows elections during wartime, specifically under martial law[1][4]. The Constitution of Ukraine prohibits holding elections to the Verkhovna Rada (parliament) under martial law[4]. Article 83 of the Ukrainian Constitution states that if the term of the Verkhovna Rada expires under martial law, it shall automatically be extended until a new Rada is seated following the end of martial law[2].

Additionally, Article 19 of Ukraine's martial law legislation specifically forbids conducting national elections[2]. This legal framework predates the current conflict and President Zelenskyy's administration[2].

The constitution also prevents amendments to itself during martial law, as stated in Article 157[4]. This means that even changing the constitution to allow elections is not possible under the current circumstances.

It's important to note that these constitutional provisions are designed to ensure the continuity of state power during times of crisis[4]. The president remains the legitimate head of state and must fulfill their duties until a new candidate, elected by the people, takes office once martial law is lifted[4].

Do you think giving Russia all they want (Russia has not been asked to give up a single thing) is going to end this?

No, this is a strawman, and a lie, Trump said the coast was under negotiation.

Do you think Russia will stop there after seeing Trump sell out an ally?

Yes, if the US owned mineral rights in Ukraine it protects Ukraine from attack. On top of that negotiations aren't completed, this is just the first stage.

Do you think China sees a green light?

Has nothing to do with this situation, except for the fact that its a drain on US resources to rebuild the Navy, and AirForce. The light has been green because US focus is on Russia. For 8 years now Lumpers make Putin to be the bad guy, when really it has been my home country China.

Give Ukraine what it needs to win. The country has done a great job and still has a chance to win. That chance is that the ONLY reason Putin is still letting himself bleed is because he STILL thinks that Trump will hand the victory to him.

Ukraine is not ready to give up; Europe is not ready to give up.

It's only people like FISHPAW who want to give up.

Well, fine. You gave up. Now shut up.

Whatever criticisms anyone might have for Trump and Vance in terms of how they dealt with Z should ask themselves these questions:

Would it have killled Z to wear a suit for one day when coming into the WH - where his country has gotten by far the most material support?

Is it appropriate for him to come into the WH, get testy and make demands in front of the camera?

As for the war itself I see 3 options going forward:

1. Negotiate a truce and try to have the Senate ratify it so long as the truce binds the US into action if either side violates terms.

2. Status quo. I don't see Ukraine outright winning with this approach - the definition of insanity.

3. Expand the conflict with greater US involvement.

Based upon media/Dem (pardon the redundancy) option 1 is a horrible choice no matter what the terms end up being. So, I ask all of you, please choose 2 or 3 and succinctly lay out your reasoning.

Musk never wears a suit and nobody in the MAGA cult cares about that. As it happens there is a reason why Zelensky doesn't wear a suit:

President Zelensky criticised for informal clothing worn to meet President Biden--but there's a reason behind it
Updated 22 December 2022

When will President Zelensky change his signature style? Earlier this month the Ukrainian president told the Financial Times that he would keep on wearing his new outfit, ditching the suit until after the war is over.

In a tweet, journalist Christopher Miller revealed that the Ukrainian leader spoke to him personally about his outfit choice and growing "a war beard."

"Zelensky told me he wouldn't go back to wearing a suit and tie and shaving his beard until Ukrainian victory in the war," Miller wrote on Twitter.

So it seems, until Russia retreats from Ukraine, Zelensky will continue championing the iconic olive green.

Zelensky didn't wear a suit to meet with Biden or King Charles either, but they're not petty little bitches trying to gin up a fake contraversy for their nincompoop followers, so they didn't/don't care.

Europe has provided more to Ukraine that the US has.

Europe has provided aid that is primarily grants and forgivable loans

The ACTUAL reason for the visit was to blow up the "deal" ------- had negotiated with Putin, because that is in Putin's best interest

The evidence is the combination of ganging up on Zelensky (VPs NEVER go to those types of meetings) and the -------- pretext they had for blowing up the deal-Zelensky wasn't sufficiently grateful? BULL ------- ----

They reacted. Not an ambush. Zelenskyy was clearly agitated from nearly the beginning. From what I observed he wants much more than what is being offered. His body language said it all. It got testy when he got real condescending with Vance, almost expecting to intimidate Junior, when instead of capitulating Vance fired back that is when things spiraled. I didn't see it as planned - it seemed spontaneous. From what I observed Trump and Vance were both surprised by Zelenskyy's snark and then it went downhill.

Zelenskyy clearly wanted an escalation of help from the US in terms of security guarantees. I don't blame him. I'd want that too if I was in his position The problem is he has no leverage. While I would never expect him to grovel, he eventually bit the hand that has been feeding him and he set his own country back as a result, IMO.

Trump offered nothing. Trump made that clear when a reporter asked about Russia keeping their word and he blew up and launched into insanity about "what if a bomb dropped on your head!" Geezus Trump was an embarrassment. A horrible embarrassment.

What do you expect our government to do? Declare war on Russia? I had issues with some of the things Trump said. I agree. With some of the things he said. It's obvious to me the path he seeks is de-escalation and he was clear that further US involvement will be toward that end. If Zelenskyy wants status quo or escalation it's pretty obvious he's not going to get much assistance from the US toward that direction. It's a stance I happen toagree with and I've felt that way since after the first year of this conflict. Ukraine is not a NATO ally and while Europe offers loans for Ukraine (and in way smaller numbers than what we've provided) we have been giving grants to the tune of nearly $200 billion with no end in sight if we stay the course.

You seem to oppose de-escalation and a negotiated end to this. I get it. Russia ends up getting something for their act of aggression and morally that's wrong. From my POV, it's not our problem. Yes, global stability is beneficial for our country. From my POV ending this war, even if Russia gets something out of it, makes that region more stable.

What bothered me most about Trump was his constant finger pointing at Biden. While I happen to agree with him, at least to a certain extent, it's campaign talk and we are past the campaign. Inappropriate and unnecessary and added nothing to the discussion.

As for Zelenskyy I get what he was trying to do. But he's trying to make a case for status quo and escalation if he can get it but instead of being contrite he eventually got testy when he continually wasn't getting what he wants. It's clear that this administration is t going to be guilted into changing its stance give. The stance is clear.

Bottom line - it appears he will likely get the support he needs if he agees to work toward a deal. You are free to disagree with that and even get angry with me for agreeing with that path. I think it's the most sensible way to go at this point.

Rubio wrote the Senate Intel committee's report on the Russian interference in the 2016 election. He knows Putin is a dictator and not to be trusted. At least he did. I keep hoping he is working with the intel community within the FBI and CIA to keep an eye on DonOLD from within his administration. I keep hoping he isn't/won't sell out America and American democracy in the end. He is about the only person in Trump's cabinet I hold out such hope for. I know. I'll probably be proven naive and gullible.

"It's a stance I happen toagree with and I've felt that way since after the first year of this conflict. Ukraine is not a NATO ally and while Europe offers loans for Ukraine (and in way smaller numbers than what we've provided) we have been giving grants to the tune of nearly $200 billion with no end in sight if we stay the course."

The numbers cited by Trump about the contributions of the US vs Europe are wrong. Charts at link:

The Real Ukraine Numbers

The Trump administration is closing in on a deal for the United States to receive a financial interest in Ukraine's critical minerals industry. The first question, of course, is why we are asking an ally that was attacked to pay a kind of reparations. But apart from that, the president has characteristically exaggerated and misrepresented the facts.

As he often does, the president has been wildly misrepresenting the facts around Ukrainian war aid. He claims that the United States has provided around $350 billion in aid; the actual figure is $120 billion. He has said that Europe has provided about $100 billion; the correct figure is $138 billion. (It is true that some portion of the European aid is in the form of loans.)

As a share of gross domestic product, the U.S. is roughly in the middle of the pack, well below small countries like Estonia and Denmark that are geographically close to Ukraine but roughly in line with larger countries like France and the U.K.

Against that backdrop, it is not clear why Trump believes that the U.S. is entitled to his requested $500 billion of compensation from Ukraine's critical minerals industry, large resources of titanium, lithium, uranium and others. Regardless, the Ukrainians appear likely to agree to something as soon as Friday, when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visits Washington.

It's also important to note that the European Union and its members have promised an additional $121 billion in assistance while the U.S. has only pledged an additional $5 billion.

Also I only recently realized how much the money earmarked for Ukraine is being spent in the US and helping the economy here (from above link):

"Moreover, an estimated 70% of what we provide to Ukraine is spent in the U.S. on things like equipment and ammunition or on U.S. forces. The Center for Strategic and International Studies has mapped where in the U.S. Ukraine related spending has gone. Interestingly, it found nine Congressional districts that received over $1 billion. Of the nine, six are represented by Democrats and three by Republicans. (Note that Florida's first congressional district received between $500 million and $1 billion.)"

How America's Aid to Ukraine Actually Works

Only a small percentage of the overall aid package takes the form of cash transfers to Kyiv; the vast majority goes right back into the U.S. economy.

I've also seen reports that Zelenskyy had already agreed to the mineral deal, which would have put real US interests into Ukraine making any further aggressions an attack on US interests and then Susan Rice got into his ear (Team Obama apparently will never go away) and advised him to go for broke.

I also heard that the weapons we are sending are mostly from old stockpiles here in the US and that the new weapons being manufactured here in the US are going to replace those stockpiles. I don't have time right now to research that, but if all the info I have cited is true, I think our leaders have been smart in how they have been using the Ukraine funding to benefit ourselves as well as Ukraine, keeping in mind a point I made the other day:

"With US money but no US boots on the ground, Ukraine has significantly degraded Russia's military capablity, something Republicans would have cheered in the past."

Bellringer - your #310/#311 - some of your sentiments I agree with. Some I understand but disagree with. You do not have the facts correct, however, as Gal clearly documented. I also knew what Gal posted before she posted it.

You offer the only choices that support your determined outcome. That is a logical fallacy - that you are either generating to rationalize your willingness to sell Ukraine out, or you are doing it to manipulate others to your POV. Perhaps it is both. Perhaps you actually believe it.

It is, however, not factual.

Putin could end this tomorrow by pulling out of the sovereign nation of Ukraine.
You don't offer that as an option, do you. Why is that?
Why is this all on Ukraine to submit, to capitulate - all without a single promise (worthless as Trump's word is) to stand up for Ukraine?
Let's be honest: Trump wants Ukraine to fall.
He wants retribution. His word, for the "Russia hoax" and making him and his buddy Putin suffer.
He made that perfectly clear in this meeting. Crystal clear. There was and is no ambiguity on that.

Not at all. Dishonesty is his chosen currency.
