Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, June 14, 2024

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas failed to report at least three private jet trips paid for by billionaire political donor Harlan Crow, according to a new report from the Senate judiciary committee. Crow himself provided the information to Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) on Thursday following a subpoena.

Golly gee... he shoulda ax'ed for an Extension for Filing like his bro Alito did!

You know, rather than just lying about these trips by omission.

When is his Senate trial going to be?

#1 | Posted by Corky at 2024-06-13 06:54 PM | Reply | Newsworthy 1

The newly revealed gifts were absent from Thomas' annual financial disclosure last week, in which he admitted to taking two 2019 trips - paid for by Crow - that Thomas said were "inadvertently omitted" from his previous disclosures.

The newest details show that Thomas took private jets three times between 2017 and 2021. Thomas has taken more than $4 million in gifts since his appointment to the nation's highest court three decades ago.

It's simply maddening that even MAGATs should be able to admit that wrong is wrong when it's one on their own side. Some imbecile here was trying to imply that Justice Jackson accepting concert tickets valued at $3000-$4,000 from Beyonce herself is just as unseemly as Thomas' multi-million dollar friendships with billionaire conservative donors whom he only befriended after becoming a SCOTUS justice and in the position to adjudicate cases which they had an interest in. This is an unacceptable look for any justice, much less one sitting with a lifetime appointment on the most important court in America.

And I feel that criticism of Thomas' and Alito's out-in-the-open flaunting of their beliefs that Congress doesn't possess the constitutional power to regulate their conduct - something never said in the Constitution itself - should come from every side that simply believes our jurists can have their own lives and beliefs, but when hearing cases on the Supreme Court, they only apply the law and the Constitution in their deliberations as their oath demands, not their closely held religiousity.

Even us peons understand the concept of co-equal branches of government, and now sitting justices infer that their branch cannot be held accountable by the others. The biggest problem here happens to be that the unelected people chosen by our representatives to a lifetime of service on the Supreme Court seemingly have a different interpretation of "checks and balances" than our complete history with interactions between the Executive and congress - many adjudicated in front prior Supreme Courts.

Nobody should be out to get anybody. We've simply got a problem we're just learning about. The reason why this has never happened before is that our predecessors - even as rabidly partisan as they have always been - only picked nominees that understood the immense honor and prestige of being chosen to be 1 of 9. No one ever saw that someone given that honor would use his position to enrich his own lifestyle at the expense of others who are directly connected to and have had multiple interests before him on the court. Congress needs rules now that were unneeded before and that's not the Democrat's problem, it's this nation's problem and further evidence that the only god in the political MAGAverse is money with its flipside, power.

The only thing Clarence Thomas hasn't failed to disclose is the pubic hair on the Coke he served to Anita Bryant.

#3 | Posted by snoofy at 2024-06-13 07:19 PM | Reply

And I hope everyone caught this fact before launching into some anti-Pro Publica rant. The information wasn't from their investigations, oh no.

It came from Harlan Crow directly to the Committee Chairman under the orders of a subpoena.

This one might get the attention of the IRS/FBI especially since Thomas has already admitted to previous omissions, and with each successive new disclosure, why would anyone think that that would truly be all Thomas has done or accepted? He's had multiple times to come clean and disclose EVERYTHING. Yet more and more keeps coming out.

If Thomas is guilty, by all mean, convict him and move him off the court, but dont do it just because the People of the United States now have a court that rules how the Constitution was intended to be done and those rulings just happen to be in polar opposite to your ideology.

This is where our disagreements lie. Just yesterday, the SCOTUS ruled that those who brought the case against Mifepristone didn't have standing - something that should have been recognized by the original judge, a Trump appointee. And this isn't a one-off. Many of the cases you see as being ruled on "correctly" in fact were not. They were adjudicated not by our Constitution, but by the religious beliefs of the judges making the rulings - something that goes directly against the constitutional mandate to keep church and state affairs separate from each other, leaving religion beliefs to be personally held, not something dictated by the state through the power of our Courts.

And as it regards the investigations done by Pro Publica, ALL of the SCOTUS justices were investigated, not just the conservatives. The only justices found to be in obvious violation of existing laws and regulations were conservative justices, hence causing the focus to be placed on their unreported activities.

Asking that our Supreme Court justices adhere to an ethical code that removes any appearances of bias or favoritism should never be viewed as anti-conservative or based upon dislike of conservative rulings. Concerns in this area are based on the fact that those judging the rest of us should themselves follow laws and regulations placed upon their own conduct and actions to insure impartiality for the cases and issues they adjudicate.

Conservatives did not give women the vote or equal protections or guarantee their civil rights.

They fought for it they earned it and they took it. From conservatives that fought them the entire way. Conservative white Men who held power and who were determined to keep it and were unwilling to allow them silly women a say in the matter.

There is no way conservatives would have ever given women equal rights freely. Not without a push. From women.

After the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, suffragists like Alice Paul knew that their work wasn't finished. While the government recognized women's right to vote, many women still faced discrimination. Paul and other members of the National Woman's Party drafted the Equal Rights Amendment.

BTW-it was not ratified by Congress until 1972 and Virginia did not ratify the ERA until 2020.

The "conservatives" on this site have no shame. You can't tell me that jurists on the nation's highest court taking money from private interests fails to constitute a conflict of interest. If it were something as insignificant as being given a cup of coffee, that's one thing. But we're not talking about a cup of coffee here. Accepting gifts of this magnitude from anyone, especially from someone as obviously politically active as Harlan Crow, is wrong on its face.

Judges must be free from outside influences when deciding cases. When you are being paid in cash or gifts of any kind, even in the absence of explicit promises being solicited, there's an implicit pressure for you to consider how your decisions may affect your relationship with the people or entities that provide you with gifts. Whether it is a case that directly impacts the donor, or simply aligns with the donor's ideology, the temptation to rule in a way that pleases the donor must be assumed and cannot be ignored.

In case I haven't made myself clear, this ethical guideline applies to all judges, regardless of party or ideology.

#65 | Posted by snoofy

Good question. And you are almost realizing the stupidity of progressives, if you continue to think like this.

Wealth is what's been accumulated by the individual, you know, the thing looked at with jealousy by those who do not have.

Income is as it's being made, at the point of creation.

I have no problem with taxing equal percentages for all Americans, as we are all equal. The rich still pay more. But lazy liberals/progressives only see money they wish they had, so they can do things they cant or to ease their conscience. Or be bums, which ever.

setting aside the reasons that taxation ought to be progressive

There are no "reasons" for progressive taxation, only excuses.

Who cares? If we had a true equal tax system, no deductions, no nothing, there would not need to be a "tax break".

Let everyone feel the pain of taxes leaving your hand and no way to get it back.

Having someone owe $1000 in taxes, then apply a bunch of tax breaks and giveaways that take it past that $1000 is criminal. Once that $1000 is reached, there should be nothing else given. No "overpayment", unless the taxpayer valid overpaid physically.

Let's keep in mind, the definitions have changed. After dropping so many things onto the 1040, folks who used to get separate support, now have to get it through the income tax system.

When I was a kid, if a family of five up the street had $1000 in tax liability during the year, they'd have it withheld on their W-2s. If they also got $100 a month, because they were poor and had three kids, they were still counted as having "paid income tax".

The reason for that, obviously, was because they paid income tax.

Today, that same scenario would be scored as if they paid NO income tax, which couldn't be further from the truth.

Now do that with the EIC, AOC, CTC, ACTC, Energy credits, Child tax credits, etc.

Wrong, it is the central point that your childish view of the world cannot wrap it's head around.

No 2 people are equal. Groups of people simply do not have equality with other groups of people.

Being poor is not equal with being rich in any sense of the word.

A rich person need not, by any act that make, deal with any of the hardships that a poor person has to deal with as a rule.

#81 | Posted by truthhurts at 2024-06-14 03:43 PM | Reply

Do higher income people receive more benefit from society?

Do higher producing people do more than poor people to produce. That answer is yea. Are poor people barred from using the same system? No.

Do higher income people receive more benefit from government?

As I said, stop all tax breaks. But those who participate more do get more, that's just common sense.

Do higher income people have more control of government?

That's another argument, nothing to do with what we are talking about.

Do corporations receive more benefit from society?

They do have write off's, but again, nothing to do with our conversation. You are bringing in other arguments thinking you are answering a question.

Do corporations receive more benefit from government? Already answered this question.

Do corporations have more control of government? I dont think so. I think progressives pulling at heart strings and appealing to people who dont want to work as hard control government. You know, like Marxists and Communists and socialists.

Those are all "reasons" for a progressive taxation structure.

No they arent. Those are just you rationalizing taking more from one American than another.

Considering ALL taxes paid, is the tax system actually progressive?

I dont do progressive things, I'll let you determine that meaning.

Yes.

Does that equality mean equal opportunity?

Yes, with caveats. What your parents did before you can have an impact.

How does educational opportunities factor into equality?

No, you are talking effort.

How do environmental considerations factor into equality?

No.

How do things like diet (and a healthy diet's affordability) factor into equality?

No, you are good at bringing up excuses.

How does generational wealth factor into equality?

It doesnt. But it affects force of effort. You can still start a business (opportunity) just like the others. Your effort is what might be different.

How do financial penalties for being poor factor into equality?

You are asking stupid questions, questions about effort and not equality of opportunity.

For the 1000th time, how do OTHER taxes factor into "taxing equal percentages for all Americans"?

If corporations are considered people for certain rights, how do they factor into equality?

Your questions are about effort and what someone has to do to put in work, not about equality. Do some have it easier because of generational work? Yes.

But your argument falls flat because there are too many 1st generational immigrants that come here and work hard with no advantages like our poor and become middle class or rich.

Your position is both childish, deceitful and ignorant.

My argument doesnt give away to the poor and people like you, that's why you said that.

Lead has serious health and intelligence impacts

Boaz doesn't think that impacts equality

A rich person will have more money to drink bottled water to be educated on the dangers of drinking tap water to remediate the lead in the water and move government to address the lead in his water.

But poor and rich are equal

61: Boaz, if you were honest you would KNOW we already are taxed at pretty similar rates.

Conservatives want only concentrate on income taxes. But when you include sales taxes, gas taxes, Medicare, Medicaid taxes, property taxes, state taxes, local taxes And all the rest, pretty much EVERYONE pays 20-25% of their income in taxes.

The difference is, losing 5 bucks to sales tax to the poor might be the difference between being able to gas up the car and making it to work tomorrow, or not. That's why it's important to not tax everyone at the same rate. Scale is important. 1% of income to the poor is getting the house and eating, for the rich, it means they might but get a brand be Ferrari this year and have to wait until next year.
