Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News
Friday, February 20, 2026

Delivering a major blow to President Donald Trump, the Supreme Court on Friday ruled that he exceeded his authority when imposing sweeping tariffs using a law reserved for a national emergency.

The justices, divided 6-3 held that Trump's aggressive approach to tariffs on products entering the United States from across the world was not permitted under a 1977 law called the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

The ruling was authored by Chief Justice John Roberts, who was joined by three liberal justices and two fellow conservatives, Justices Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett, in the majority.

Yet another government payout to businesses at the cost to the people. Maybe was the plan all along.

Canada and the EU are making trade deals that bypass the US.

Even though Pres Trump's emergency tariffs have been shot down, the results of them are going to be long-lasting.

Sometimes when you start a ridiculous and unnecessary trade war you lose.

When you create conditions where if you win someone has to lose then it's always possible that the loser is gonna be you.

When you create win-win conditions then the rising tide does raise more ships. (Though it still helps to actually afford to have a ship!)

I see Kavanaugh is getting a lot of (well-deserved) heat for his argument that it would be too messy and complicated to unwind and reverse the illegal tariffs.

It reminds me of the arguments that some people make that actual Marriage Equality would be too complicated if it were extended to traditional Mormons and Muslims and others who practice marriages that aren't considered "normal", even though technically they would fall under the exact same logic as when interracial and gay marriage bans were deemed unconstitutional.

#2 | POSTED BY CENSORED: No he will not - you must be confusing hi with biden and his attempt to get aroune th SCOTUS ruling concerning 'forgiving' student loans.

There is a Plan B, for President Trump, which can be effective and requires no congressional approval:

"Here's the thing the trade establishment doesn't want to think about: IEEPA doesn't just let the president regulate imports. It lets him prohibit them. And it lets him issue licenses as exceptions to that prohibition. Those aren't implied powers or creative readings. They're right there in the text of the law: the president may "prevent or prohibit" importation and may act "by means of instructions, licenses, or otherwise."

That language points to a mechanism that could reshape the global trade landscape even if every tariff the administration has imposed gets struck down."

Trump told a news conference he's "absolutely ashamed" of justices who voted to strike down his tariffs, calling the decision "deeply disappointing."

"Their decision is incorrect," he said. "But it doesn't matter because we have very powerful alternatives." He did not immediately specify them.

The president also announced during the briefing that his administration would now add a 10% global tariff over and above current tariffs. He said he would sign an executive order imposing the new tariffs after the press conference."

OK, ya'll aren't going to want to hear it, but I've always thought the irony was delicious.

In the story of the AC (whom DJT closely resembles in every way), there is a Covenant of Many; a peace agreement between Israel and many of her neighbors... a 7 year deal.

Half-way through, the leader of the world's most powerful military, who made the deal, breaks it by attacking... wait for it... Israel.

Now, who else would do that? Then he enters the newly built 3rd Temple (possibly complete with Trump Temple and Casino sign!) and claims to be God.

This immediately pisses off actual God, and all hell breaks loose. Literally.

Then Earth and Heaven are united as a Planet of Eden (not just a Garden), and it takes Yeshua his own self 1,000 years to teach us how to govern ourselves... so that was never going to be easy anyway.

So, a New Beginning.

Tariff Ruling Kicks Off Fight Over $170 Billion in Refunds
finance.yahoo.com

... Thousands of companies and importers are set to launch what could be a prolonged battle to try to recoup as much as $170 billion in tariffs they've already paid to the US government after the Supreme Court struck down a key tool in President Donald Trump trade policy.

The top court was silent on the topic of refunds when it ruled Friday that Trump didn't have legal authority to impose the duties under an emergency law.

"They take months and months to write an opinion, and they don't even discuss that," Trump said in a news conference after the ruling. "We'll end up being in court the next five years."

The US president said he is planning to immediately impose a fresh 10% global tariff under a different provision. But that won't stop the flood of lawsuits by companies seeking refunds. ...

"Let's be clear about what today's ruling was and what it wasn't," the administration's top finance official said in prepared remarks.

"Despite the misplaced gloating from Democrats, ill-informed media outlets and the very people who gutted our industrial base, the court did not rule against President Trump's tariffs.

Six justices simply ruled that IEEPA authorities cannot be used to raise even $1 of revenue," Bessent added."

"A dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone," says the president
There are, of course, a few problems here.

If and when SCOTUS overturns Trump's use of tariffs, the federal government will have to refund that $200,000,000,000.00 to corporations.

Not to those of us who had to spend more because of the tariffs.

Nope. That $200,000,000,000.00 will go to the corporations who imported goods and paid the tariffs.

So, you and I paid more for goods over the past whatever months to corporations who paid the federal government the tariffs.

So, when tariffs are refunded, they go back to the corporations, right?

And, will the corporations be sending checks to you and I, because that would be the right thing to do?

LOL

Just more transfer of wealth from the poor and middle class to the wealthy.

Almost like it was planned.

And then there's THIS problem:

"A dividend of at least $2,000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone," the Trump.

OK, some simple math here

US Population: 342,000,000

US population minus the 10-15% or so ~high-income~ folk: 300,000,000

So, okay, let's go ...

300,000,000 people times $2,000.00 per person is $600,000,000,000.00

Tariff collection so far in 2025 has been around $200,000,000,000.00

But we've already determined that that $200,000,000,000.00 was going to go to corporations, right?

So, where will the $600,000,000,000.00 come from?

So, the questions still unanswered are:

Which justice is it going to be?

Is this not a time to celebrate the fact that two conservatives voted for this? That not all conservatives are in the back pocket of Trump? I mean, I've read numerous comments predicting the doom and gloom of the Supreme Court since Trump got in charge of ---. Sure, not all the conservatives voted for this, but c'mon y'all...this IS a huge deal and maybe should give a bit of hope and damnit...can't anyone acknowledge that there are conservatives AND liberals who together do the right thing?

Good Lord...maybe I missed it, but I didn't even see anyone here acknowledge last December when BOTH parties AND Trump did the right thing when a bill was UNANIMOUSY PASSED and signed by TRUMP making animal cruelty a federal crime and Trump issuing orders to create a task force to enforce it and then also Trump directing the FDA to start enforcing the regulations and laws governing the ethical treatment of animals in research labs or Trump saying he wants to see an end to all animal research, after all AI can do better now anyways. Of course Trump says a lot of bullshht, but when he actually DOES something right, maybe giving some thumbs up might encourage him to do more good things. The media BARELY gave this stuff any coverage and I only found out by accidentally seeing ONE story online by ABC. If the media would have blasted the amazing-ness of it, it would trigger Trump to do more...he craves it when the media has to acknowledge He and both Dems and Repubs did something RIGHT...And let him take all the credit "There's never been a president like me fighting for the animals..." Use his own ego to propel him to do the right things. Just MY opinion.

Is it THAT hard to give credit where credit is due? That's why I'm an independent, even if I can't spell it correctly in my username LOL ;-) Choosing a "side" would make me want to be loyal and ignore the wrongs that my side does and ignore the good when the other side does.

That's what I'm doing...this shows there IS hope....that there are still folks in the Supreme Court who are basing their judgements on the law and not politics.

I'm not convinced the Supremes have turned over a new leaf yet.

They're known to have as many ulterior motives as Trump himself. This could be a means of shortening the leash on a President who wasn't smart enough to know he was blowing the whole "Plan" apart with his illconceived, ego-driven, bombastic rush to autocracy.

IOW, the death of democracy is a long haul project. An ego-driven Trump was treating it like a sprint.

I never once said that I believed that the Supremes had turned over a new leaf. Go back a re-read, as I can be a TERRIBLE communicator. So let me know if I did imply that please.

What I am saying is to celebrate *THIS*ONE*PARTICULAR* event...

By ALWAYS holding back from acknowleding when things go right because "we don't know if a new leaf is turned over" means the positive energy never gets out there to support them when they do things right...INSTEAD forgot for the moment what the future brings or what the past brought, and go WOO HOO THE CONSERVADICKS GOT IT RIGHT FOR *ONCE* and maybe just maybe if enough people did --- like that it would create some momentum to let the politicians know that it can be worth they're while to do more like this.....

But if they don't get the good feedback FROM THE OTHER SIDE... In other words, if conservative politicians/judges etc got SUPPORT from some liberals acknowledging they liked what they did, they will remember that...

If you NEVER give any positive support they'll hear:

NOTHING.....

CRICKETS from "their other side"

Once again, on topic, it's possible that the Supremes feel that Trump is treating the overthrow of a democratic republic like it's a sprint. The Supremes know, in fact, it's going to be a long and arduous trip.

Therefore, they haven't turned over a new leaf. They only yanked on Fido's choak chain.
