NASA's 1977 computers aboard Voyager are still working in interstellar space (April 2026)
wp.modern-science.net

... As millions around the world watched on smartphones, T.V.s, or in person, Artemis II and its four-person crew burst from the ground on April 1 and successfully began its 10-day journey to the moon. While all eyes were focused on the Orion spacecraft, it's worth remembering that it takes a small army of humans"and computers"to make these kinds of awe-inspiring journeys possible. And just like everyday tech users, NASA also has to upgrade its systems from time to time, and the one powering Artemis looks nothing like their relic ancestors. That doesn't necessarily mean those older versions did not work.

Resurfaced footage released by YouTuber Gary Friedman shows some of the sturdy computing hardware that powered Voyager 1 and 2, a pair of spacecraft first launched in 1977 and tasked with taking a trip through our solar system. Incredibly, both of these spacecraft are still functional in deep space, despite relying on vintage hardware older than many of NASA's engineers today.

The roughly 14-minute video shows a NASA engineer taking viewers on a tour of Building 230 at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in southern California. As he walks through the room, he passes an assortment of refrigerator-sized computers made by Univac and IBM. He also stops to acknowledge punch cards used to communicate with the spacecraft, old tape drives, and a communication hub lined with phones and small monitors that one engineer calls "the heartbeat of the enterprise," The voice behind the camera says he is documenting these historic devices, "before they replace it all with mainframes."

All of this ancient-looking hardware was tasked with overseeing the operational safety of the Voyager craft, which are currently well over 16 billion miles from Earth in interstellar space. On board both spacecraft is a suite of custom-made computers and electronics built prior to 1977. Each of the Voyager craft has three computer systems onboard, with a total memory capacity of just 69.63 kilobytes -- that's less than a standard JPEG file.

Scientific data collected by the spacecraft is encoded onto a digital 8-track machine before being transmitted back to Earth. Since memory is in such short supply, the spacecraft constantly write over old data once it's transmitted. ...

@#2 ... Is the cost of repairing the damage to those US bases added into Sec Def Hegseth's total cost of Pres Trump's war of choice? ...

While this article does not seem to specifically address the question I had asked, it does provide some good info ...

How Much Does U.S. Military Base Attack Damage Cost?
www.thepricer.org

... Iranian attacks on U.S. military bases in the Middle East have caused at least $5 billion in damage, according to a Pentagon assessment reported by The Wall Street Journal on October 31, 2026. A person briefed on the costs said the eventual figure could reach $15 billion. These are assessments of damage, not final payments for completed repairs. The Pentagon has not published a comprehensive reconstruction budget.

An earlier Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) analysis estimated $4 billion to $9.4 billion in damage to bases and fixed infrastructure. The figures differ because they cover different periods, evidence sets and assumptions about replacing buildings, equipment and military systems. The latest estimates concern attacks across the Middle East, not the repair bill for one installation. ...

So, has Sec Def Hegseth included the damage costs into his cost of Pres Trump's war? If so, which numbers might he have included?

As some background ...

Interstellar Messengers

Voyager 1 and its twin Voyager 2 are the only spacecraft ever to operate outside the heliosphere, the protective bubble of particles and magnetic fields generated by the Sun. Voyager 1 reached the interstellar boundary in 2012, while Voyager 2 (traveling slower and in a different direction than its twin) reached it in 2018. Now Voyager 1 is on the brink of another unprecedented milestone -- reaching a distance one light-day away from Earth. ...

Mission Status

Approaching One Light-Day

On Wednesday, Nov. 18, 2026, at 2:16:07 a.m. PST, NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft will be 16.094 billion miles (25.902 billion kilometers) away from Earth -- or, the distance light travels in 24 hours, also known as one light-day.

Voyager 1 will be the first human-made object to reach this distance from Earth, adding to a long list of historic firsts for the mission. Voyager 1 and its twin, Voyager 2, are the only spacecraft to ever operate outside the heliosphere, or the protective bubble of particles and magnetic fields generated by the Sun.

...In one incident, about five drones flew roughly 100 feet above the reactor building at River Bend Station in Louisiana.

The story was first reported by the publication The Liberation Times. The NRC published the documents on its website in response to the publication's freedom of information request.

The NRC compiled the incidents in a table of security incident reports and posted it in its public document database this week. Plant security officers and other staff reported most of the incidents. In a few cases, local police alerted the plants.

Every entry carries the status "Closed Unresolved." Nearly all also state that the report remains open pending internal NRC review.

The NRC log describes the Jan. 6, 2025, incident at River Bend:

"On January 6, 2025, at 1746 CST, River Bend security observed approximately 5 drones flying over the reactor building before being visually lost to the south at 1750. The drones appeared as rectangular and black. No lights were observed. The approximate altitude was 100 feet above the reactor building. The licensee heightened the security posture awareness after the drone sightings. The licensee notified the West Feliciana Sheriff department, FAA, and the FBI."

River Bend is a single-reactor plant with about 970 megawatts of capacity, according to owner Entergy.

The reports of these incursions -- following other reports earlier this decade -- come as both the tech industry and the Trump Administration have been working hard to boost expansion of the U.S. nuclear power fleet. ...
