Drudge Retort: The Other Side of the News

President Trump on Friday ordered federal officials to install signs outside the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History that correct what he says is "inaccurate" information presented by the institution about American history.

I Watched the Unhinged Anti-Smithsonian Congressional Hearing So You Don't Have To

Anthea Hartig keeps her cool on the stand, answering questions about ideological bias.

Yesterday's particularly noxious one, "Rewriting American History: Examining the Smithsonian's Efforts to Reshape the Past" emerged in response to "Saving America's Story," the report released by Trump's White House Policy Council on July 4.

The document features 160 pages of grievances about the "ideological capture" of the Smithsonian Institution, claiming that it promotes a left-wing activist agenda.

Tuesday's hearing summoned Anthea Hartig, director of the National Museum of American History, to Capitol Hill to be grilled about the findings by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform."

Republicans obviously prefer the Goebbels Propaganda Agenda:

"As the Reich Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, Joseph Goebbels orchestrated a total takeover of Germany's media, arts, and culture to build blind devotion to Adolf Hitler and enforce Nazi racial ideology.

His strategic agenda relied on centralizing power, censoring opposition, and utilizing psychology to manipulate public opinion.

The Core Goals

The "Fhrer Myth": Goebbels deliberately elevated Hitler from a politician into a messianic savior figure who could do no wrong.Dehumanizing the Enemy: He ran aggressive campaigns targeting Jews, Communists, and liberals as existential threats to the German nation."

A few years ago I visited Thomas Jefferson's home, Monticello.

I was very disgusted how every exhibit along the tour, the tour guide would work in some way to disparage Jefferson.

All the things he accomplished and they were obsessed with the fact he had owned slaves. From what I've read he took much better care of them than many others.

I'm not going to defend slavery but it was woven into the fabric of those times.

I see exactly what Trump is going after. Apparently what I saw at Monticello must be compounded at the Smithsonian.

Here's a shocker for you, BILL: Jefferson was obsessed by the simple fact he owned human beings. And he remained a perplexed hypocrite on that topic his entire life. So what? A complex hero with complicated views? Oh, the horror. So awful, being informed. Turn on the night light!!

The US also created the first modern concentration camps - for the original inhabitants of the land. There it is, live with it.

Ideology is easy. History is often hard. Definitely not a child's tale, unless one chooses to remain a child.

Mr. Trump's directive cited a 162-page White House report released on July 4 that accused the museum of adopting "an ideological framework that no longer treats the American story as a shared national inheritance to be taught or celebrated, but as a political instrument to divide, dispirit, and discourage our citizens."

I had to go check this one...

"Yes, Archie Bunker's famous wing chair from All in the Family is in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C."

"I didn't have no million people marchin' and protestin' to get my job."

"No bum that can't speak poifect English oughta stay in this country"oughta be de-exported the hell outta here!"

Not-quite-random-Archie quotes. From a character so central to American TV culture we enshrined his chair in the most prestigious American history museum that exists.

I've taken the tour too. You were looking for hagiography to support what you thought should be heard. Why? What makes you more knowledgeable about what to present than the people actually there, who are fully versed in their material? My wife was concerned there wasn't a tour of the slave quarters. That interested her very much, and she's as southern as you get (more so as the Alzheimer's takes full hold; you can draw your own conclusions).

Then she should probably be in a position to opine that an MA in History does not an "expert" make; neither, for that matter, does a PhD. She should also be able to point put public history, especially, is informed by many factors. History is a lot like archaeology, in that interpretation plays a huge role. And that interpretation is, hopefully, driven by a well-informed perspective assisted by encyclopedic knowledge of the subject, training in relevant techniques and disciplines, plus the ability to apply reasoning and reach (tentative?) conclusions based on said encyclopedic knowledge, training, and research.

"Experts"? Too often, I think, the word is employed to imply infallibility or some variation on that theme. I prefer to think of people possessing different states/stages of knowledge and expertise and the ability to apply them bringing that to the delicate art of piecing together all those scattered tesserae from which we attempt to assemble a reasonably accurate mosaic.

"A Century Later, Restrictive 1924 U.S. Immigration Law Has Reverberations in Immigration Debate

The 1924 Immigration Act's eugenics-influenced national-origin quotas reshaped U.S. demographics for decades and its core provisions still shape U.S. immigration law.

The 1924 Immigration Act reduced annual arrivals from nearly 707,000 to 280,000 within five years and slashed quotas for Eastern and Southern European immigration.

The law's national-origins quotas were rooted in eugenics and designed to restore a Northern and Western European demographic majority; they helped drive the foreign-born share of the U.S. population to a record low 4.7 percent in 1970.

By closing off legal pathways, the law left the United States largely unable to accept Jews fleeing the Holocaust."

On a different but related topic, I know what you mean about the danger of government agencies operating behind a wall of secrecy.

I've been following the UFO, or UAP, issue for the last six years or so.

Whatever the ultimate explanation may be, information that was previously hidden or classified is gradually coming out.

More people, including members of Congress, are becoming concerned about the national security implications. In the preliminary UAP report released in 2021 following a six month deadline, the government's UAP Task Force acknowledged that many incidents remained unexplained. It also reported that some objects appeared to make abrupt maneuvers or travel at considerable speeds without any discernible means of propulsion.

The report found no data indicating that the incidents involved Chinese or Russian technology, although it did not completely rule out that possibility.

Db,

"So what's your point?"

It all ties back to someone asking me what qualifies me to decide what should be discussed at tours in Jefferson's home several posts ago.

My complaint was the whole tour was constantly talking about slaves at every stop in the tour. Constant running Jefferson down and not discussing many of his accomphlistments.

All I said was my wife was qualified and likely could teach them a thing or 2.

Ok...I'm done. I need to go pick up pizza.

"Thomas Jefferson the credit he deserves for taking Sally Hemings to be his sex slave"

Sally Hemings lived with Thomas Jefferson in Paris, where she had greater legal freedom than she would have had in Virginia.

She ultimately chose to return to VA with him after he promised that any children they had together would be freed.

Given those facts, do you still think it's accurate to describe her as his "sex slave"?

Yes.
She was his slave.
He impregnated her at least six times.
He probably had sex with her hundreds of times. Maybe thousands.

Why wouldn't you call a slave that you have sex with a "sex slave?"

Uh, Bill, Jefferson owned Hemings, inheriting her via his wife when she was about a year old. Indeed, she was his wife's half- sister. (Such interesting people!). Jefferson was Sally's legal owner when he started screwing her, not later (and possibly earlier) than sometime when she was between the ages of 14-16.

Sally Hemings was not an inexperienced woman suddenly abandoned in a foreign country. She had lived in an elite household, learned some French, acquired skills as a lady's maid, and had her brother James in Paris.

Most importantly, she had a legal path to freedom there that she did not have in Virginia.

Staying would certainly have been difficult and uncertain, but it was not impossible like you are portraying it.

Sally Hemings understood she was a slave, even if BillJohnson can't figure it out.

It's actually an intellectual act of colonialism and racism, that you're denying her existence a slave.

You're writing her out of history, and why? To hide the truth about Thomas Jefferson's personal choices when it comes to slavery and sex with kids.

Plenty of people of the time condemned him for taking one of his slave girls as a concubine. It was quite the topic in the press.

People understood then, and understand now, what kind of man does that. You're denying Thomas Jefferson is that kind of man, just like you deny Trump is that kind of man.

You wrote that as the follow up sentence to one you wrote defending a slaver who raped his slaves, broke apart their families and subjected them to involuntary medical experimentation.

"From what I've read he took much better care of them than many others." Also Billjohnson

Records from the time are incomplete but Jefferson was perhaps the most prolific slaver alive at the founding of the US. The Declaration of Independence was a complete contradiction to how he lived his own life. It's not like the thought never occurred to Jefferson that slavery was abhorrent. His original draft of the Declaration called slavery the "cruel war against human nature."

Ben Franklin freed his slaves before the revolutionary war ended. Not Jefferson though. The reason slavery is mentioned so often at Monticello is because Monticello could not have existed without slavery. It was built and maintained by slaves. Slaves did the cooking, maintenance and agricultural work. Slaves played a bigger role in the existence of Monticello than Jefferson ever did. It may still exist today only because, unlike Washington who freed his slaves upon his death, Jefferson's slaves were sold to cover his debts.

#97 | Posted by BillJohnson

Yes, of course, because I was force fed that knowledge as a schoolboy.

But as an adult -- Why would I want to know more about a man of such low moral character?
As an adult, I believe in the old saying: "You are the company you keep."

You obviously think Thomas Jefferson is an upright good-standing moral citizen who deserves to be celebrated for all the good things he did for this nation, including perpetuating slavery.

I think he's a bad man who did bad things, almost all of them for the purposes of perpetuating slavery.

You can shoehorn UVA into that framework, since plenty of religious leadership at the time was very adamantly pro-slavery, but UVA was built as a secular school.

You can even cast his Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom in this mold, since it put a wall between Church and State, the anti-slavery movement at the time was based in a reading of The Bible that you still probably don't agree with right now in the year 2026.

Ask your wife. She'll know.

"Does your wife know that the Civil War's roots are tied to a division within a college in southwestern Virginia in the 1840s?"

Here's an interesting Civil War tidbit.

A man named Wilmer McLean had the distinction of having the war begin and end on his property.

The First Battle of Bull Run was fought near his home in Manassas, VA. To get away from the fighting, he moved to Appomattox Court House, VA.

Then in 1865 Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant in McLean's parlor, where the surrender documents were signed.

McLean is quoted as saying,

"The war began in my front yard and ended in my front parlor."

It's been a few years but I explicitly recall them covering Jefferson as an architect, his role in the founding of the country and the declaration, his many political positions, his role in westward expansion including the Lewis & Clark expedition and the Louisiana purchase, his family and many other topics about Jefferson. Yes, they do frequently mention slavery as well but slavery was highly critical aspect of his life and the country overall. To ignore or to gloss over it would be obscuring Jefferson's legacy. Examining his life is in many ways a microcosm for examining the country.

One of the most illuminating interpreters of this strategy beyond official definitions is Yuri Bezmenov, a former KGB agent who defected to the West in 1970. In a series of interviews and lectures, Bezmenov broke down ideological subversion into an identifiable multi-stage pattern. Contrary to popular imagery of spies blowing up bridges or conducting sabotage missions, he emphasized that throughout most of its lifecycle, ideological subversion is overt, legal, and non-violent.

It is carried out not by secret agents or saboteurs, but by journalists, educators, entertainers, academics, civil society organizations, celebrities, and influencers. These agents of influence often act within the bounds of law and free speech, projecting their worldview with persuasive consistency.

Over time, the accumulated effect is strategic indoctrination, which changes the DNA of the targeted nation.

In this state, the target population no longer recognizes what interests it should defend, nor how to defend them. Individuals become unable to distinguish truth from propaganda, and even when confronted with factual evidence, their reactions are shaped by pre-programmed ideological responses.

It's quite telling that the people who daily justify Trump's inherent dishonesty are the same people who can still come up with a workaround to downplay the immorality of slavery.

"It is carried out not by secret agents or saboteurs, but by journalists, educators, entertainers, academics, civil society organizations, celebrities, and influencers. These agents of influence often act within the bounds of law and free speech, projecting their worldview with persuasive consistency"

A good example of this is your absolute fealty to the mostly fabricated narrative of Zionism.

Slavery doesn't exist, the problem has been resolved

The problem hasn't been resolved.

You're lying.

It's what commie spyboy does. Lie.

Reconstruction was a complete failure.

Southern States made sure of it. Northern States gave up.

Reconstruction failed due to violent white supremacist resistance, a lack of northern political will, and the return of white-elite-dominated southern governments.

When Reconstruction collapsed, America was left with a deeply divided nation, a crippled multiracial democracy, and an entrenched system of racial oppression. The end of federal oversight allowed the South to establish Jim Crow laws and severely marginalize Black Americans for a century.

Now we have institutional racism.

If you really want to solve a problem you first have to admit you have one.

And btw. Institutional racism is not our only unsolved problem.

"Bezmenov broke down ideological subversion into an identifiable multi-stage pattern. Contrary to popular imagery of spies blowing up bridges or conducting sabotage missions, he emphasized that throughout most of its lifecycle, ideological subversion is overt, legal, and non-violent.
It is carried out not by secret agents or saboteurs, but by journalists, educators, entertainers, academics, civil society organizations, celebrities, and influencers."

You just described The Wall Street Journal, The 700 Club, One America News, Liberty University, The Heritage Foundation, The Republican Party, etc.

Now we're in the openly illegal stages, with Trump's actions from DOGE to Tariffs being found illegal... but only after the fact, when the damage is already done. And then he just does the same things again.

What stage does Bezmenov have coming after leaders start ignoring the law, or is that the end?
