"...the Mosquito State..."
Years back, the bride and I wanted to explore Minnesota, and had a basic itinerary for a sojourn. The night before we left, a friend-of-a-friend called and said our plan was NG, and we should instead start at Duluth, and drive the North Shore.
He was right. It was VERY cool, with lots of great scenery and waterfalls. When we got way North, within a few miles of the boundary waters, I kept expecting the Hamm's Bear to come around the corner, canoeing in the land of sky-blue waters!
We stopped at a Swedish resort, and couldn't figure out why NO ONE was outside. When we asked, we got a one-word answer: Flies.
I thought, how bad could it be?....and then I walked outside...and was swarmed immediately. Back inside within 10 seconds.
The next morning, we had the Nordic Buffet, including my first and last taste of lutefisk.
