... "It's really a sea change in American politics," said Evan Roth Smith, a Democratic pollster.

Some of it appears to be the result of the widening gulf between the generations on a host of policy issues, from economics to the US's relationship with Israel.

But Democrats have also spoken of a collective trauma in the party following Joe Biden's repeated gaffes and the collapse of his campaign in 2024, aged 81. That, and the Republican victories in the 2024 election, have left a mark.

The transformation in the party has taken place over a matter of months, beginning in Texas on May 26, when Julie Johnson, 60, lost to Colin Allred, 43, and Al Green, 78, lost to Christian Menefee, 40 years his junior.

Mr Green is one of the oldest members of Congress " although more than a decade younger than the very oldest.

In March 2025, he was ejected from the House chamber during 80-year-old Donald Trump's joint address for heckling and waving his cane in the air: possibly not the image of youthful vitality that his voters back home had been looking for.

Then in June, Adriano Espaillat, aged 71, lost his New York primary to 32-year-old Darializa Avila Chevalier, who had been backed by another young, dynamic socialist " Zohran Mamdani, the New York City mayor.

Ms Avila Chevalier backed abolishing ICE and cutting off US military aid for Israel " many of the hallmarks of the younger candidates who surged to prominence this year.

"Israel is probably the biggest dividing line within the Democratic Party right now, and it is one that divides very neatly along age lines," said Seth Masket, a political science professor at the University of Denver.

"Older Democrats tend to be much more sympathetic to Israel, and younger Democrats, particularly those who came of age while [Benjamin] Netanyahu has been a prominent national figure, have a very negative view toward Israel." ...

@#10 ... Republican healthcare program: "we're all going to die" ...

"Well, we're all going to die": Joni Ernst dismisses concern over GOP Medicaid cuts (May 2025)
www.salon.com

... At a tense town hall in Butler County, Iowa, on Friday, Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, faced backlash from constituents while defending the "Big Beautiful Bill," a Trump-backed spending proposal that recently passed the House.

In one exchange, an attendee challenged the senator over what they characterized as the devastating impact of proposed GOP cuts to Medicaid and SNAP benefits.

While Ernst claimed that those who would lose Medicaid under the legislation are those who were already not eligible under the "original definition" of the program, an audience member could be heard shouting, "People are going to die."

"Well, we're all going to die," Ernst responded, drawing boos and gasps from the crowd. ...

Another impeachable offense.

A year after President Donald Trump threatened "harsh measures" against Colorado unless the state released convicted election denier Tina Peters early from prison, new reporting has revealed an apparent extortion plot by the administration.

A newly disclosed email is renewing scrutiny over whether the White House followed through on that threat, wrote MS NOW's Steve Benen.

The New York Times reported that as Trump publicly criticized Colorado for incarcerating Peters, a former county clerk convicted of tampering with voting machines, the White House convened an urgent "brainstorm call" with five federal agencies to explore curbing federal support to the state. The next day, the Departments of Transportation and Energy announced they were canceling hundreds of millions of dollars in grants for Colorado projects.

Every President would be facing the ICC for what they did in office. So, Trump's Iran is no different than the other Presidents: they'd all be facing the ICC, charges, and arrest. The next US Presidemt will probably violate some ICC.

Next, illegal immigration. Toss them all out. Legal immigration vs illegal immigration. That's not a Dem or Rep position. The difference is enforcement. Were the deaths of people during illegal immigration enforcement illegal? That's why we have a judicial branch.

But, if you can be prevented from coming across the border without a trial, you shouldnt get a trial after sneaking in. Fine: the immigtation laws exist and the immigration courts. Use them. Close the borders until its done.

OK, let's talk SCOTUS.

The only balance for a Dem/Rep is 4 vs 4 on the bench with no deciding 9th vote. This prevents ideology deciding cases. If the result is 4-4, act like a jury. Go back and get a verdict and don't come back until you do.

Anyone who thinks their side picks Justices that are unbiased are liars.

Every judge walks around saying "I'll uphold the Constitution" while actions say "and my beliefs control my vote".

When the judges at any time lean one way or the other, it should never, ever be known ahead of time that it'll be a 5-4, 6-3, 7-2, 8-1 decision, voted by party lines.

I want a _____ on the ballot for EVERY OFFICE. Not just President. Every position I'm voting for. I want a write in vote for every job.

Stop both parties from controlling the choice by offering only two check boxes.

The US should close all 900+ foreign military bases.
The US should cut its spending to NATO, UN, until we pay less than #2.

Get rid of the law that says the US must provide troops in any country but at home. We freaking have 76,000 minimum troops under the NDAA? Those nations overseas should be putting up troops and defense spending.

Bring back the WPA. Able bodied people should be working for public assistance. Partially disabled is partially able.

Does this sound like I'm MAGA, DSA, Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, etc?

I've been unaffiliated happily since Perot. I think he was my first vote for President. Independent means I am not subject to the party sole voter lever. Those that pull one lever are already a problem. It's lazy voting.

Alex,
Truly, I'm not a "MAGA," whatever that is and yes, I own a MAGA hat.
Before I retired, I had a life-size cardboard Trump standing against the wall in my office. I bought it during his first term as a conversation piece.
But do you honestly believe I approve of Trump's lifestyle? Do you believe he reflects my personal values, especially after everything I've posted here over the years?
All this "pedo" nonsense people posting one accusation after another is nothing more than an attempt to insult me by association.
I don't really care, but I hope it's all just part of the game. "You bought a Trump Bible ha ha."
How could anyone who knows my beliefs think I approve of the way Trump has lived?
I voted for the Republican candidate, who happened to be Trump.
Today, politically, I'm glad to see him taking on Iran. It's about d time someone did.
There is far more going on and far more at stake than what is immediately obvious or can be reduced to nuclear weapons, although I completely agree that those are a serious concern.
You have to compartmentalize politicians. Supporting someone politically does not mean embracing his character, lifestyle, or every decision he makes.
That doesn't mean I dislike everything about Trump either. I don't.
He is a smart man.
That's all I'll say.

what an incredibly revealing post

From the denial of MAGA being a thing
to the lifesize poster of Piggy
to the non denial denial of supporting piggy's lifestyle
to calling the Epstein scandal "nonsense" that he doesn't care about. He doesn't care that at a minimum piggy protects pedos, objectively protects pedos
to the iran war idiocy
to THINKING PIGGY IS A SMART MAN

Now THAT is funny

A post rarely reveals so much about a person
