With Americans in a Sour Mood, Democratic Voters Are More Engaged in Midterms
www.pewresearch.org

... Trump approval drops to 30%, as 44% of voters see their vote as against' him.

And while many registered voters will not turn out to vote this fall, Democratic candidates are also buoyed by their supporters' relatively high levels of engagement and stated motivation to vote when compared with those who are backing Republican candidates. For example:

- - - 78% of voters who back their House district's Democratic candidate say it "really matters" which party wins control of Congress " 9 points higher than the share of Republican backers who say this.

- - - In contrast, Republican candidate supporters were 4 points higher on this measure than Democratic supporters at a similar point before the 2022 midterm election.

The partisan gap is also wide on other measures of engagement: Democratic supporters are 14 points more likely than Republican supporters to say they have given this year's election "a lot" of thought and 17 points more likely to say they are "extremely motivated" to vote this year.

A new Pew Research Center survey of 5,062 U.S. adults -- including 3,917 registered voters -- conducted Sept. 28-Oct. 4, 2026, also finds that Donald Trump's approval rating now stands at 30% -- the lowest of his second term.

Trump Mobile hack and apparent lack of FCC authorization raise security alarms
arstechnica.com

... Trump Mobile apparently failed to obtain necessary authorizations to operate the international calling portion of its phone service, Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.) wrote in a letter to the company today.

Her letter said Trump Mobile also doesn't appear to have submitted a required plan for fighting robocalls. Trump Mobile's key business partner, Liberty Mobile Wireless, did make a robocall database filing, but it was not complete, Hassan said.

Hassan's letter raised questions about Trump Mobile's security related to a report that hackers stole personal data of 3,615 customers and Trump Mobile's previous confirmation that a vendor it uses exposed customers' personal data on the Internet. Hassan alleged that Trump Mobile failed to follow multiple FCC filing rules that are supposed to help ensure the security of mobile services.

"The apparent absence of authorization for Trump Mobile international services raises questions about who is providing or reselling the international telecommunications services advertised by Trump Mobile, the authority under which those services are being provided, and the company's commitment to complying with requirements designed to safeguard national security," Hassan told Trump Mobile CEO Patrick O'Brien. ...

US trade balance sinks deeper into the red as imports hit record high despite tariffs
www.newsobserver.com

... The US trade deficit widened more than expected in August as imports jumped to a record high against the backdrop of robust domestic demand, keeping trade on track to again subtract from economic growth in the third quarter.

The deterioration reported by the Commerce Department on Tuesday was despite President Donald Trump's aggressive tariffs on imports, which he has argued are meant to shrink the trade gap. The nation posted record goods trade deficits with at least three countries, including Mexico. ...

The trade shortfall increased 13.7% to $105.6 billion, the largest since March 2025, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis and Census Bureau said. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the deficit would be $102.0 billion.
