It's what they are doing with their screen time, over time they are doing less and less structured thinking.
A Short video, notifications, algorithmic feeds, constant task-switching, reduced long-form reading, less boredom, less unstructured thought.
It doesn't have to be this way its not screen time, but the apps they use.

Don't say I never give you credit. I basically agree with your comments.
However, I sort of think it's both the apps and the screen time. It's my observational opinion that the mere ubiquity of, and dependence on, the constant electronic companion in our pockets creates a cycle in which the addict (me, you, everyone else) continually chooses the path of least resistance. As you mentioned, memes, photos, quick videos, black-and-white explanations instead of complexity - heck, without intending to, many of us seek the endorphin hit of simplistic answers. Reading and true comprehension requires patience. A miniature computer loaded with algorithmic apps and Wikipedia and our bookmarked, go-to sources doesn't. We are in many cases subcontracting the reading and thinking to the machinery. Anyone old enough to remember Cliff's Notes knows what a crutch they were for people disinclined to read. Now the whole Internet is Cliff's Notes. AI is making it even worse.
