But often enough that the relationship between power and wealth has been a thing, well, forever, and that condition tends to destroy people and maybe even nations in its wake, especially the nonpowerful and the nonwealthy ones.

Miguel de la Torre: For several years I have called for an ethics para joder. Joder is a Spanish verb never to be used in polite company, literally translated as a certain four-letter word beginning with the letter f and ending with k. To joder is a vulgar way of saying, "to screw with." The word connotes an individual who is always purposely causing trouble, who is a pain in the rear end, disrupting the established norm by refusing to stay in their assigned place -- a trickster. Before the vastness of structural racism and institutionalized violence, before global neoliberalism and domestic racism, resistance is futile.

Liberation for those on the margins is indeed hopeless. Few alternatives exist capable of establishing justice. The only option left for those who occupy the space of Holy Saturday, where few if any options exist, is an ethics para joder, an ethics that screws with the prevailing power structures. Overt rebellion that threatens white affirmative action often leads to death -- symbolically, physically, or both. How, then, to be wise as serpents but gentle as doves? If the purpose of law and order is to maintain oppressive structures, then subversion provides opportunities for new strategies to arise. While eurochristians deem maintaining law and order as ethical, those on their margins understand it as oppressive.

An ethics para joder recalls a table-turning Jesus and refuses to obey and follow the rules created by those who benefit from the rules"rules that currently provide space for orderly dissent that pacifies the need to vent for the marginalized but is designed to change nothing. When the disenfranchised start to joder, instability of what has been normalized occurs, allowing opportunities to arise. When marginalized communities begin to joder, prevailing power structures are endangered. To joder is a subversive praxis, refusing to play by the rules established by those maintaining a social order that protects their privilege, power, and profit. If liberation means bringing forth a just society, then it implies that the current one that is unjust must be overthrown. No choice exists but to move beyond laws and rules established to maintain the current system.
